Further research has enabled us to guestimate the composition of the cartridges for the 1837 chasseur carbine. We have both the extensively trialed (but never adopted) Brunéel cartridge and the cartridge for the 1840 chasseur carbine, a carbine using the same Delvigne breech, calibre and rifling profile but with a heavier charge.
For more on the history and features of the 1837 carbine:

Barely a quarter of the way in and I'm seeing an unfortunate discrepancy between the *theory* of embedding the primer on the Bruneel cartridge and the *practise* of actually trying to prime a weapon with it. And that's on the range during leisurely reloads. "Monsieur le Général, nous avons un problème..."

It’s rubbish, hence why it never made it past trials. The Bavarians reinvent the idea 30 years later for the Podewils-Lindner conversion.

Wow, that percussion cap makes enough flame to burn an eye out! Is the outer guard around the nipple for that or just to hold the sabot? I can see that the deep well on the hammer might help contain the caps flame also. surprised they didn't make it so the cap screwed onto the nipple coarsely. I wonder if the 2nd type worked as a gas check, to bad it didn't clean the rifling at the same time

Did you guys ever look into multiple audio tracks on one video? I assume the separate French videos hurts the Algorithm's opinion of your stuff by having videos that a lot of your viewers never look at. I saw someone else adding a separate audio track to the same video, so all views are on one video rather than split, and wondered if that might be useful for your channel.
@thebotrchap
@thebotrchap Жыл бұрын
Interesting idea but I can't see how that would work since what I say and show in French may not be 100% identical and rarely takes the same time. Some things take longer or shorter to say in one language or the other. Syncing would be a PITA. Frankly we get so little back from YT that the algorithms opinion of us is irrelevant.

If you weren’t tearing the paper off before attaching the cap (looks like it was done both ways), could you make a tab on the paper so you hold it with the thumb of the off hand and could tear it away from the cartridge during the capping? So the hole could be larger so the cap would more easily fall out.

Maybe I missed somethng: If what you are shooting is considered a carbine, it must be the longest carbine ever used. Is it actually a Dragoon Musket?
@thebotrchap
@thebotrchap Жыл бұрын
In French terms carbine was typically more dependent on who used it and had very little to do with length or calibre. This rifle is for the chasseurs who ALWAYS have a carbine regardless of length. Cavalry, mounted dragoons and mounted gendarmes will have carbines that are not necessarily short, mounted artillery musketoons etc you get the picture...

@YerluvinunclePete Жыл бұрын
@@thebotrchap Yes, I see the rationale for the process, I just think it failed on more levels that the "ease of capping" reason that you aptly debunked. The occasional handless conscript may not cost as much as the wasted ammunition, but it's still not optimum. While a sound teachable moment for the others, it costs a rifle and reduces overall efficiency of the unit in its training or action. Best to more the drill away from that sort of risk. When I reacted though, I think it was more over recreating the process today. I'm a patron of the channel, Chap, I think more of your hands than a conscript's.

Errr this was absolutely standard in the flintlock era using cartridges. Prime the pan from the cartridge, stuff the rest down bore. The 1830s is still very much flintlock so it makes sense to try to keep the loading technique as close a possible for troop training purposes. Frankly the most likely thing to happen is the cap falling off the nipple during the loading sequence.
@stamfordly6463
@stamfordly6463 Жыл бұрын
@@thebotrchap Wouldn't it have been more usual to prime the pan at half-cock rather than full-cock though ?
@thebotrchap
@thebotrchap Жыл бұрын
@@stamfordly6463 In theory yes, in practise less so. I have seen many locks where the half-cock notch is an afterthought, which makes it equally dangerous and hard to find. Also with the flint fitted in most cases its hard to prime at half cock because the flint is in the way and its easy to slice your hand open on a corner of it, at least on military flinters. Probably less of an issue on well made civilian guns which tend to have smaller locks with smaller flints.

Please use a modern ramrod as watching you use steel on steel jangles my nerves ! Great to see the reproduction of different cartridge types and the results you achieved 👍

1: Exception to the rule. You can’t test an original loading technique by not doing it. 2: I wanted to load with the original rod to see the effect on the ball. It has a specific head profile and weight for a reason. Once again I can’t test the original technique if I use other means. That done I can revert to my usual brass tipped plastic coated steel rods.
