18650 Lithium-Ion Battery Harvesting From Old Laptop Battery Pack

I do harvesting of batteries myself. Just the other day I pulled 6 fully working cells out of a 2010 HP laptop battery. They all took around 2600 mAh of charge each, which incidently is their rating. Best thing about these; They were 100% free. Some guy just wanted to throw his broken laptop out with everything in and to it. I didn't hesitate asking if I could have it. I now use them for testing of my powerbanks.

Thanks, very interesting. I'm not interested in the batteries, but to rebuild a laptop battery pack. After a bit of work, got my HP pack opened, and lo and behold, there were only 4 batteries, but room for 8! The other 4 had plastic pieces the same size as the batteries... :) If I can find some good batteries for this pack at a reasonable price, I may go ahead with 8! Thanks again, RichE

If you charge those 18650 Batteries and want to do a battery pack or put two in parallel then you should better use an balance charger. I used a lot of 18650 charger and they all showed 100% charge but some of the cells had 4.172v and some other ones 4.185v ... Since I discovered this I use a SkyRC Imax B6AC V2 balance charger which I bought from a trusted site which sells RC Hobby stuff.

I use these in my bicycle lights. I just jam a screwdriver in the connector hole after removing the contacts and work quickly! I leave the metal tabs on the plus ends so that they protrude more to get a better contact with the lights and charger since they are pretty flush with the surrounding plastic. If the tabs do not remain on the battery (which are dangerous as this videographer says) then I sometimes use a spike to level the plus end up more to make sure it touches the connector of my cheap lights. As you can see in this video too, it is difficult get a good contact to the batteries sometimes since they are made to be soldered to gether and not go in a light. I find that they are better than trustfire/ultrafire which are probably reused car etc batteries anyway.

If your charger is rated 1.5 volts, it can not charge a 3.7 volt battery. It will indicate it to be fully charged because the battery has a higher voltage than the charger.

I did exactly the same with an old Toshiba laptop battery. The battery would not charge and I ended up buying a new battery for my laptop which worked fine and charged and lasted a long time. I then decided to take the old apart but very carefully as these things can easily catch fire if you stick a screwdriver through the side accidentally. I found the all 6 of my 18605's were all working fine and exactly the same as these here on this video. All of them were fine and I still have them now a few years later. You know what I think???? I think there is some sort of a clock on the circuit board of the laptop battery to tell it to stop working so you then have to go out to buy a new one. It is a big money making rip off and of course they tell you not to take the batteries apart. They would say that wouldn't they? If I ever need any 18650 batteries now I will buy second hand or even new laptop batteries from eBay. It is a cheaper way of getting these batteries and the 18650 batteries that do come out of the laptop battery are all good and a good brand.

China CAN knock off anything :) I've seen images on forums where people showed a smaller cell inside an 18650 body with the rest of the volume being concrete. So weight isn't even a good indicator...

Those LG batteries still have their half or 40% cycles or 2 years of ussage left when you use them as single. Because I have heard that laptop battery packs dont use full capablities of these individual cells. How long did they last for you?

Some lap top batteries use the PIC Processor within them as a Cycle Clock. Dell does or did. They can render the Battery pack dead after so many charge discharge cycles when in fact there is nothing wrong with the batter pack. Harvested batteries can be fine and have quite a bit of life to them.

It is theoretically possible that the UltraFire's are first-gen Li-Sil which, while having much greater energy density, have massive degradation after only a handful of cycles. Keep in mind that Tesla Motors chose Panasonic 18650's after extensive testing on all 18650's on market, and then some prior to choosing Panasonic for their vehicle. There's a good bet there is a reason why.

Bryan Barnard I am still using the batteries I have harvested from this pack and with my Lipro charger have determined that they are 1200 to 1700 mAh and I have no idea what they were originally rated for but they are far better than any 18650 Trustfire, Ultrafire I have and I will never buy another ****Fire battery again. They are all garbage and these are a far better value. I have bought many Panasonic NCR18650B 3400 mAh batteries and they are are amazing. What do you mean by "unprotected"? no overcharge protection? so you need to keep track of how many minutes/hours they are charging?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 10 жыл бұрын
Unprotected as in there is no protection circuitry in them at all. Your charger needs to have overcharging circuitry in it to keep from overcharging these batteries or they will overcharge. They also have not short circuit protection either so you have to be very careful not to do that. The protection circuitry is built into the battery pack and managed by the laptop. Once you harvest these batteries from the pack all that is gone. Thanks

Richard Lloyd I live in Canada. amazon.com sells this to USA residents for $17, and amazon.CA sells it to Canadians for $30! I'll be damned before I pay them those prices! So it would be nice to know what keywords to search on, so I can find equivalents and better values. BTW, there are plenty of sellers and affiliates peddling this model on youtube already. I just don't think it's worth that much money for a charger. (it's not a horrific price, but it's not a deal either)

Great video thank you. I was actually fooled by the ultrafire 6800 on ebay. I thought oh man finally a battery that will be surpass my expectations. What a bunch of crap. Used it in a usb charger to charge my phone and it brought it all the way from 50% to 60% before shutting off. I was thinking maybe I did not charge that one so I charge it up was done in no time which I thought was wierd. This time it brought it up 5% before shutting off. Gut out some wire and used my hobby charger to discharge and then fully charge the battery. I had to do it twice because I just could not believe the results. 860 mah yes a whopping 860 mah. I think these are really old batteries they found somewhere and have rewrapped them to read 5000 6000 and 6800mah. These batteries were removed from Amazon due to negative reviews. I have made an official complaint to Ebay but I doubt the greedy company will do anything about it. Any one who reads this please complain also so we can get these garbage batteries out of the US.

You are welcome. They are garbage batteries. They are like the "heavy duty" batteries from the dollar store. They look good and then you figure out why they only cost a dollar for two. Ebay is still selling the bogus batteries and some people actually think they are getting good product. If it's your first purchase you would have nothing to compare it to. Thanks for the feed back and watching. I appreciate it.

I need a little help i have the same battery as yours and want to replace cells but i read somewhere the replacing cells is in vain because a chip is included in circuit that stores the information of the cells if you change cells the battery doesn't recognize it and show 0 charging and you have to reset the information stored on the chip and it is difficult is it true or i go with replacing the cells... and need some information about the cells my battery is 10.8v 55wh and 4910mah each cell of 1.8v, is it necessary that the voltages of replaced cells should be same as previous or it can be changed and and can mah be changed and is the cells in the laptop batter are simple rechargeable or they are different..

don't expect much of these cheap battery's, the safety electronics inside mostly suck and you'll get (if you're lucky reused cells) complete knockoff cells that deteriorate amazingly fast. better spend a few bucks and replace with top notch cells

I bought a 4 pack of that knockoff NiMH you display at 8:54 but grey colored. Funnily enough I knew it would be a cheap knockoff (I'm not THAT naive) & only bought them so I could gauge the true capacity which averaged around 350mAh. It definitely felt lighter than the other genuine NiMHs I own.

How do you find the mah on the individual cells with the given information on laptop pack
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 8 жыл бұрын
+Jesse Lam Usually there is information printed on the individual cells that help to identify them. As you can see in the video there are six cells in a pack you could take the total mAh advertised and divide by 6 to get the total for each one or you could buy a lipo charger and check them individually once you harvest them. I have a video on that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/roOooWeKZ81-f68 Thanks.

O well the cells I harvested form a laptop pack did not label any information on it however I found 9 cells and the original laptop pack said the capacity was 85wh. The thing is 85wh may be refering to the capacity at 11.1volts Not the capacity of the cells at 3.7volts so I don't know if it can just directly divide it by 9. Do you know any mathimarical equation for this
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 8 жыл бұрын
+Jesse Lam You have to know all the correct values to figure out how much each cell has. Your best bet is to use a LIPRO charger like I did. I recommend Turnigy Smart6 80w 7A Balance Charger with Graph Screen. Here it is at Amazon: amzn.to/1Ur4o8y I can no longer recommend the Imax B6 as there are too many clones out there to be sure you get a real one. Once you have a charger you will be able to reliably charge your cells and at the same time be able to check their capacities. If you are going to be doing this regularly, like I do, it's well worth the investment in the charger. What are you using to charge it currently? Thanks.

When going to Ewaste centers, and looking which one of those pack to buy, First is to find Manufacturer, whether it's Dell, HP, etc. The one to look for first is Japanese made. Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic etc. because they have Japanese made cells mostly panasonic which are rated better, in capacity and quality. The next is to look for total voltage and total Watts Hour. For the most time the total voltage is 3.7 x 3=11.1 which tells you that there are 3 batteries in series. If the pack looks like there is only 3 batteries in a row, the overall size would be just that, which some of the older laptops used them. Most of the packs are 2cells in parallel(2p) and in series of 3 cells (3s) for a total of 6 cells. the higher and bigger packs are 3 cells in parallel (3p) connected in series (3s). Now is the total Watts of Watthour on the label. The example pack on this video is 47Wh at 11.1v. The total Watthour is the total capacity of all the cells in Parallel, where the total voltage is the total voltage in series. So dividing 11.1/3.7 =3S. From Power equation P=EI where P=Watthour total, E=total voltage and I will be the total Capacity in Amps. 47/11.1=4.234 Amps. Now comes the logical equation, you have a total of 4234milliampshour, this can't possible be only one cell in series, (1P3S) for a total of 3 cells, because from the look of the pack, first of all. Does it look like only 3cells in the pack or 6 or 9 or 12, comparing from 1 single cell. If its only 3 cells, there is not a single laptop battery cell that is more than 3000milliamps. So if you look again at the pack and it looks like 6 cells total, then you have (2P3S) pack so each pair of cells in parallel has a total of 4234mah. Each cell capacity would then most likely be 2117 mah. Its rating would probably the next even number which is 2200 mah. The rating is not necessarily the actual capacity, because of other factors involved as in battery chemistries and their impedance or resistance. The higher the resistance the lower the capacity is from its rated capacity. If you have one of those intelligent chargers, it can tell you the resistance, like the Liitokala 260 or the opus BT-C3100. The common balance chargers does not give you the impedance or resistance values. The more the cells are charged and discharged, the higher the resistance increases. There are some that has 4cells in parrallel and in 3S for a total of 12 total cells. 3.7 x 4 would amount to 14.8v total. I have seen those more common to the bigger laptops with bigger monitors. If you can't find Japanese made packs, the next choice I go for is Dells. They were ahead of everybody in my opinion. Almost all the Dell packs I have dismantled, had a temperature sensor built in and were wired for balanced charging. I guess they made sure the temperature sensors were there to prevent damage to the cells and exploding laptops afterward. Have a happy hunting.

Richard Lloyd dunno if that charger is a clone. It did cost me €23,-. I think it's around 30 dollars. This is without power supply. I heard that 1 amp 12v should work for just 1 lithium cell with 1amp charge current. I do also have another charger that charges nicd, nimh and nizn. It has a 0.9amp charger 12v. Voltage range is between 10~15v for charger. It can charge 4 batteries and 1 amp just fine. My imax b6 is currently at Guangzhou Terminal for flying to the netherlands. Will charge my 18650 from the pack first. I had them at around 2.3-2.4v under 60watt load. Open circuit 3.6v each cell. So it is discharged. edit: i charged those cells using my old laptop where the battery came from. The laptop charges those cells to 4,08v which is not 4,2v it should do. There was already something wrong when the battery was almost full. It will power a 60w bulb for like 30 min or so i think untill it's around 2,5v.

I have a laptop that uses that part number. It looks as if there night be 6 18650s inside it. It is one of those ones that no longer holds a charge. I have read that it only takes one bad cell to cause them not to work and usually most of the cells are good. It seems to me that the protection circuits inside a battery pack won't let any cells take a charge if just one is bad. I know the individual cells are not protected but there is a board inside each most laptop battery. Any laptop battery that is not known for starting fires would likely have that circuit. It is better to have a battery that does not work than a house burned down or a someone badly burned. Also you would not want to inhale any of the fumes if one of those cells does leak or vent. It smells horrible and it is certainly not good for you what it is. I read that hydrogen flouride is one of .the gasses released. I do not know that for sure but hydrogen flouride is very nasty. It is also known as hydroflouric acid which dissolves glass. There are a bunch of other nasty acids that don't affect glass like that. Hydroflouric acid is stored in containers made specifically for it because it will dissolve things many acids don't even leave a mark on.

I would take the pack apart and test the batteries individually to see which one is bad. Even if they one is bad may hold enough of a charge to use in a flash light. You never know but at this point you have nothing to lose. I took a cheap "protected" Chinese battery apart here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGObqHqkeappg9U and yes the smell was terrible. Nowadays this test is shit because the chinese have caught on to it, if need be they fill their 18650's with leadpellets in glue to get to the desired 44-46 grams. The only way to be safe or sure is to go to your local dealer and buy Samsung, Lg, Eneloop, Panasonic or Sony. It's more expensive but they work and are a lot more durable. There are no 18650 lithiums above 4000 mAh! So he's right to highly doubt that! LOL. The chinese even have replaced chips in the protected ones wich state after testing a very high current, just give them a try and be dissapointed. Even buying the more expensive batteries in Shenzen China (AliExpress and the likes) will not guarantee that you get the right stuff. I learned the hard way. Don't buy batteries in China. Btw The likes of R-Trippers or Indoor-Smokers which i for various reasons regard as commercial whores. Have this problem, you don't bite the hand that's feeding you!

Looks like a cool charger but seems to be limited to a 5V input only, which is ok but for travel charging with 12v systems may be a hassle. Thanks and all the best.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 8 жыл бұрын
A 5 volt input means USB. You can plug it into any USB wall or car charger. So it's actually very flexible. When used with a 2 amp USB charger it can charge 2 batteries at 1 amp each or 1 to 4 batteries at 0.5 amps each. It will also charge NiMH batteries up to D size. I've used the capacity measuring abilities on some old batteries to see how good they are, that's handy. Mainly it's got a nice display compared to Nitecore. Both brands work well, but the VC4 is about double the cost at $30. Ideally, you should write down what you need. Lithium only or lithium and NiMH charging? Fast 2 amp charging or will 1 amp or even 0.5 amp be fine? Will you need to charge big D sized 32650 batteries? Do you want a voltage display? Etc... Then look at the nitecore, xtar, and other websites to narrow down your choices.

+crisis corral take off the label sticker, use a screwdriver to lift up the side of the plastic and pry it up with pliers, it should pop the plastic piece off and then you can safely and easily remove them. dont worry too much about damaging them though, they are in a metal case. if you do rip the insulating part use packing tape to fix.
