Rachel - I’ve got to tell you about my mullein plants… so easy to do… I bought mullein seeds from Baker Creek Rare Seeds in Dec 2022. This past February 2024, I used the winter-sowing plastic milk jug method to start all my garden seeds this year. I will not ever need to start seeds in my house again under lights. I had such huge success with winter sowing in milk jugs. I’m in Alberta Canada. We got -40 Celsius temps for a good week this past winter. I plunked the milk jugs in snow banks in February and when temps warmed up, I would shovel more snow on top of my milk jugs when the snow melted. Normally, the May long weekend is the weekend where we get our gardens in, but this year, it was very cold still, so I delayed planting seedlings until about the first week of June. So, when I opened the milk jugs to get to the mullein seedlings, they were scrawny, tiny, like 2” tall plants with a couple of leaves. Well, it’s September now, and mullein is only supposed to have a 2-year lifespan. It’s a biennial. The seeds from Baker Creek are called Verbascum Densiflorum (Mullein), meaning, lots and lots of flowers and stems. So, my plants today are only technically 7 months old, but they have already produced stems and flowers two months ago already!!! I reached out to people in a mullein facebook group and someone said that because my winter temps were so cold, maybe it tricked the mullein plant into thinking that it was in Year 2. Anyways, I have 58 mullein plants thriving thanks to, I’ll say, the winter sowing method. You should try it!

Rachel, I make elderberry tincture too and prefer that to syrup for the same reasons as you. I add a dropper-full to my tea or water and don’t even taste it. Get the benefits without the pucker! Love all your remedies ❤ P.s. If you add a little vitamin E oil to your oils, it will prevent them from going rancid.

I love using my infused oils for making a easy diy lotion. Melt 1/2 cup infused oil and 3 tablespoons grated bees wax (more or less depending on how thick you want) in a double boiler. Pour into a blender and while the blender is running add 90° water until it emulsifies . Pour off extra water and put into jars . This recipe can be added to on the oil side with different oils just keep it within the 1\2 cup and the water side with aloe and hydrosols just keep it within the 1/2 cup . And you can add essential oils right before emulsifing ❤ I love this stuff and it's so easy. Refrigerate the extra you aren't using

Thank you Rachel so very much! I am new to learning about medicinal plants and for the first time this year I had planted about 25 to 30 new plants that I never even knew existed! I love watching how you do your tinctures & different ways of using the medicinal plants. I have been trying to learn as much as possible about the medicinal plants because I'm not one that takes medication. As you had stated earlier, medication is getting to be ridiculous in prices. One of these days I hope to have an entire room dedicated to an apothecary and another room for all of my canning. I love this video! I see people making the jars, but never come back and show you the straining and how to use. When you have issues opening jars, grab your forjars lid opener. One of us functions is to pry the band away from the glass a fraction of an inch. Do this in 3 or 4 places and you should be able to unscrew the lid with much less effort.

I bought mullein seed on Etsy and grew some this year. Somehow, in a new bed that I built for rhubarb, I had 2 mullein plants pop up and they're bigger and healthier than the ones that I purposely planted. 😂

RACHEL… this question is off topic. It’s about using a roaster to cook down large batches for canning. I have gone through (2) 22 quart Hamilton beach roasters because my tomatoes sort of burnt onto the edge where the liquid sits. When trying to clean it the enamel came off! This is after two uses! I thought it was a fluke so I bought a new one. Made sure it was preheated, and it did the same thing after the second use. Can you give any tips on how you use and clean your roaster? I would love a whole video on it becauselooks like you are always using the same one and have been able to make one last! Thanks so much!

OMG I love you! Horse tail is a nightmare to get rid of and massive issue for people. However I've been lucky that I have some in my front garden and never really bothered with it. Calendula in jojoba oil has been amazing for my face and calendula tincture has worked well on burns and I have two dogs that get a fungal type rash that it is amazing for. Also bug bites and it worked on a sore ear. I think if all the herbal things I’ve tried, calendula to me is like the oregano tincture is to you. Thanks for the great info. Is the echinacea head what you want? With or without the petals?

Is elderberry tincture as effective as elderberry syrup? I’ve been debating which one to make for next year. I have kids and I hand out elderberry to friends and family for flu season. It’s gross either way, I agree, if it’s as effective I’ll try the tincture next time since we cant can elderberry syrup anymore for shelf life

Rachel next spring go dig one of the mullein rosettes and transplant it to your yard. Get a small one so you can get the root, dig deep. It is a biennial so that rosette will send up a stalk that will flower and make A LOT of seed. You will always have mullein from then on.

Oregano oil and tinctures are my go-to. It is amazing stuff. Warning: Oregano oil burns in your mouth and can give you heartburn (its like pizza flavor for the rest of the day lol). I use the capsules and avoid that burn. I don't use it externally, but I'm sure it's amazing used that way too. Im not surprised it worked so well on your son's leg. My son reacts to poison oak the same.

I'm an herbalist from WV. I'd be very willing to trade you all the mullein you can handle (harvested from our land...no chemicals) for a small amount of your ghost pipe tincture! I agree with you about elderberry syrup...I can't stand the flavor of it and I just cannot make myself take it daily. I use tincture too. GREAT info! I am making rose oil for the first time. Hoping it does well and is nice for my skin. God bless!

Starting dose is usually 3 drops. Those with light body frames may find that one drop is plenty. Put 1 to 3 drops in a cup then add a little water.

I was having anxiety issues and it was suggested I try st John's wort supplements. I spoke to the pharmacist about it. He told me I couldn't take them because it works the same as my antidepressants. I would be overdosing. 😮
