Tried canning my excess tomatoes for the first time in my 70 years. I was inspired to try it when I found my dad's canning supplies when sorting out his house after his passing. Because I watched enough of your video's, I felt somewhat confident to give it a try. I will be expanding what I do next year. I am proud of myself, and I feel my very practical dad smiling down on me.

I’m very, very sorry for your loss Stephanie 💔 but I’m also very proud of you!! I’m 53, I canned foods with my gran when I was a child and a teen…. But never on my own… I was always to afraid to try pressure canning…. 2 years ago, after the start of the pandemic… I taught myself pressure canning, water bath canning…. All the things canning!! There has been no stopping me!! Now, I’ve put up all our garden this year and many other things that I purchased at our local farmers market! I’d like to think that my gramma is proud of me too! I know if she were here, she’d be right there in the kitchen with me!! I’m sure your daddy would be too!! Happy canning to you!! ❤️💕🙏🏼

Note for Storing Jars; always store clean jars with the rings on. Chips in the edges of the jar will prevent sealing. Rings prevent chips and minimize additional storage as well as ease of use.

I smiled at the beginning when you talked of that beginner feeling that the canned foods are too precious to use. Guilty here too. It is a LOT of work and time and planning. Even now i do still experience that in the first weeks. That feeling of "Gah! I _JUST_ put the lid on that!" :D My jar total guess here is 1245
@VeganPrepper2 жыл бұрын
You've probably got a million other people saying the same thing, but I think those who go to the grocery store two or three times a week (or even once a week) have no concept of what that food would look like should they put it all on a shelf for use over the year instead of purchasing it over that year in small chunks. It's a HUGE amount of food. And it's normal. This is how much food it takes to feed people, even only two people. People think it looks like "too much" because we've normalized the small grocery trips rather than putting up and preserving our own. You're such an inspiration to me and you have been for a very long time! I personally NEVER get tired of the pantry tours because you do actually give new info each time. You say, "This didn't work, this worked. We didn't like this recipe. We tried this new recipe and we really love it." You're the reason we can cowboy candy now, so I'll love you forever for that! But do whatever you want to do. Just wanted to give you hopefully an encouraging word that your content is always worthwhile. Even if you feel like it's not new, it's more new than you might think. 🥰

Wow Rachael, looking at your pantry is better than viewing an art piece! It is a testament of your work skills in so many ways. I would guess that you have possibly 3200 jars of gorgeously and lovingly preserved food there. You inspire with your easy to listen to tips and advice of how to (and sometimes how not to 😉) garden and preserve. You and Todd have a synchronized work ethic and make it look so easy (I know it is not!) Enjoy your year of resting your soil and thank you for the time spent helping us all to learn with you. I'm an English woman living in Bulgaria and trying to grow as much of our food as I can. I've started slowly and am picking up the pace a little each year. Every day is a school day, and I love it. Much love to you guys xx💖

I’ve seen a couple of your freeze dried videos and I appreciated that you tell us honestly if you would or wouldn’t freeze dry that item again. But I would LOVE LOVE to see a video of the good, the bad and the ugly that you have learned so far with that method of preserving. My grandparents stories of childhood , being depression era kids got me started 16 yrs ago along with wanting our little growing family with farm fresh food. My grandma would of loved to teach me but her hands were medically unable but she supplied me with every jar she collected until she passed in 2018. In return I canned items for her that saved the effort of peeling for her. Your pantry is amazing! Thank you for all the recipes and knowledge ❤️

If you're going to alphabetize, do it by subgrouping into themes: veggies, meats, jams, condiments, etc. You don't want to be looking for Dijon under D if you happened to put it under M for mustards. The quarts shelf looks wonderfully organized.

You and several others have helped spark my canning and food preservation. I love watching you and Todd with your meals. AND I have tried several of your recipes. One of the most recent was your ketchup. Love it. Even more than store bought. I have not bridged into pressure canning however seeing you do it helps me to at least consider it. Encouraging to hear - and I know it sounds strange- about the mice thing. Had them the first time this year. Thanks for the tip. As for your jars? I guess 1030 between your shelves and that may be low. Thanks for your perseverance. I look forward to seeing what you do with your canned and preserved food over the next several years. BLESSINGS!

So lovely to look at! Hubby and I have been rethinking whether or not we need to garden next year. My canning was piled on the floors, wall ledges and on HIS wood piles down in the basement. He was lamenting he had nowhere to put our winter wood, so he brought in this giant industrial cabinet. I got to work trying to organize the stuff that was in his way and filled that cabinet right up! so much food for just the two of us (and like you, when the kids come to visit they take home their favorites) Really, I think we can skip the garden on most things and just eat what we have, but I LOVE preserving food. I get so much satisfaction in saving and being frugal. Love your channel! Think I watch EVERY video you put out :)

Start practicing with the canner with just jars of water to learn how your canner works and how it works with your stove (where the sweet spot is to keep your pressure stable). You can do it without lids so no waste there. Unless you want to can water itself, there is some value in that if you need water storage and therefore still no waste. Do it as many times as you need to to build confidence.😊

We did the same thing we had an extra room in the basement that has turned into storage for foods & canning supplies, we built shelves & have filled them big time, started canning meats. Plus the mock pineapple, mock apples & cabbages, most of the recipes came from you & we like everything, my significant is just learning to eat differently. My snow bird friends like beets & tomitillos so I grew them but they didn't want them, just a little bit so I benefited w/ salsa Verde & pickled beets that I love anyway. Want to thank you for doing your channel, I've learned so much from Todd & yourself. I'm gonna be getting chickens but just a few for eggs.

Very impressive and so much work! It will be really interesting to see what is in the pantry at the beginning of the '24 garden season. As for organizing the shelves, I would suggest that you assign a number to each type of item and have a list of the numbers with what each represents posted on the front of the pantry. All you deal with posting on the shelves is a number and a glance at the list can quickly direct you to the location of that item. You don't have to worry about alphabetical order or any order really..apples can be number 1 or number 30..it doesn't take that much time to locate the word "apple" on a list of items. It works for me for organizing other household materials.

Potatoes;as of today, potatoes are 8.99 in Mid-Michigan. I bought 20# to can. It's crazy the prices in the stores. I gardened too and went to the produce stand. My pantry is 85% homegrown canned meals. Hubby got 2 deer and what we have my 2 freezers are almost full. Bought freeze dried (long term) fruits and basic staples, dehydrated, ect. With the prices going way up, we have to live out of our pantry for at least a year or more. Occasional trip for random items but no big shopping hauls. Proud of all my hard work. You inspired me Rachel & Todd. Thank you❤

Thank you for this video. It is nice to know that I am not the only one who feels like, "what? Don't eat that. It took a lot of work to make it." LOL! I started canning and gardening about three years ago when I was 73 y/o. Never too late!!! Now, I am planning to extend my garden next year.

I have been watching for a couple years now and am totally inspired. I started to can recently and have had a garden for about the past 4 years. Enjoy your videos and ideas. I will be watching to see how the next year goes without your garden. Blessings to you and Todd. Thank you for the content.

You have become one of my favorites to watch.. always informative. I live in NY, I don't see myself moving to where I would be able to homestead. But I have to say you have given me the desire of wishing that I could. Thank you for always sharing 💕.

You and Todd are definitely an inspiration in canning. I just have a small pantry that has sauces that I've canned. As for the count in your pantry, I'm going to say about 1,600 of jars on your shelves. Many blessings!

Your shelves look fantastic. I, unfortunately, canned for SHTF and left them on the shelves without touching them. I'm currently eating through 2015 pinto beans, chili beans!! I'm guessing that you have about 1650 jars. Wonderful job, Rachel!!! You have taught me a lot!! We are indebted to you for turning us on to cowboy candy!!! It's addictive!! Love ya girl!! Be safe!!
