I have made this hat twice now. I have made some modifications to the pattern. It is very important that you turn at the end of each row to get a slight ribbing effect. After row 4 (84 dc) I repeated it two more times to get extra length in the body of the hat. I think the final row of tc is one tc in every second stitch (15 tc) to avoid bunching up at the top. The other modification I made was to the border. 1st with outside of hat facing you dc in each stitch, join and TURN. 2nd row, sc, sk1, 7 dc in next, sk 1, sc. Join at the beginning and turn. 3rd row, 3dc, FRONT POST loop in next three dc, pull through loops and chain to secure, fp sc around middle dc of fan. I think you know the rest. The front posts are so much easier that the back posts ant this went from a one day project to an afternoon project because of this one tweak. It is important to turn though to make it work.

I took the decreases to be put "between" the first set of decreases to be instead of decreasing the 13/14th stitches together, to decrease the 6/7th stitches together, and so on, so they would be alternated and not stacked. And I could be wrong. Anyway, success.

When I was researching the military history in my family tree I discovered that from around the 1700s and into world war I, the men where actively encouraged to and taught, a range of needlecrafts. Knitting and sewing type skills included. My dad (Korean vet) was very nifty with a sewing machine. He made mum a fancy blouse on it, just to make sure it was as advertised. My sister's father in law sewed new covers for all their camping chairs. Originally it kept men productive and creatively occupied and out of trouble. It was also an escape. Very useful skills too.

In the 1970s, men were encouraged to do needlework as a stress relief. My uncle did latch hook rugs, and it was published that the Los Angeles Rams, Rosie Grier did needlepoint, I believe. You can't get anymore masculine than Rosie Greer and needlepoint. Maybe your son would be interested I looking him up. He was an amazing man.

Corrina! The confidence you have in your work is enviable! The way you can look at your work and see that it’s wrong or that you slipped a stitch in the wrong place. It’s amazing. As for Justin doing crochet, have him use a long color change variegated yarn. Every time he finishes a color, he can change stitches. That way he doesn’t get bored, but still learns about tension.

We don’t have as good a yarn selection in UK and Ireland, but we make the best of it! Please let your son know that many soldiers crocheted as POWs during the war. They rallied together and made clothing for one another when it got cold. My family still has a treasured yellow scarf from WWI. They were brothers together and heroes forever.

I love that your son crochets! He has great tension! I tried teaching my son years ago, as well. Now, he’s 14 and he’s found out that my brother (big, 6’6 macho man, mechanical genius) can knit. So, now my son is getting back into crochet a bit, as well (he’s also into gaming, horseback riding, guitars, etc. As they are). I told him I subscribe to quite a few men who crochet and that fisherman made nets by hand this way and they probably still do somewhere in the world. It’s not a feminine thing, and it should be something for everyone. So, I’m glad to see our younger generation getting into it and carrying on the skill.

18:34 I guess decreasing between the previous decrease they mean that you have to make your second row of decreases in the interval of the two previous. Make 4 stitches from the beg and decrease onto the 5 and 6, then make 8 stitches and decrease on the two next.

Regarding Justin and his hand crocheting, I take all our long orange extension cords, fold them in half, then chain them to keep them in the garage. I have a nail that I hang the chained cords on. They keep them from tangling, and easy to pull out and take to where ever I need them while doing work in the yard. They undo so easy also as those who do crochet understand.

That back post stitch section made me think of an exercise in 4th grade where we had to give another student verbal instructions on how to make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich and they had to follow our instructions to the letter which resulted in some sorry excuse for sandwiches. 😂 Trying to explain how to make a back post crochet at a time when probably not many people knew what they were does take a lot of words but I totally get how you didn’t see it at first. What an interesting hat! I've been crocheting since I was 12 (that's 59 years ago!). One thing I've learned whenever doing a new pattern is to read through the whole thing, completely before going through each row. i was wondering if the chain stitch in row four of the border really necessary, then they mentioned it in the next round. I love these fiddly stitches! You did so magnificently at figuring out a way! BRAVA! I'm making this now in a 4-weight fuzzy vintage yarn that has no label/unidentified. It's a rosy light plum color. Looks a little like the Red Heart Brushed, but not as soft, has a little bit of a non-metallic glimmer, obviously a synthetic. (I did a burn test on it and I detect no wool or animal fiber and not the ash I'd see from a plant fiber, it just melts.) My initial chain of 84 in this yarn on a 5mm hook came out to 22 inches, which is a rather loose fit for me, but it gets cuffed up so I can always run a little cord of the same yarn between stitches to tighten it up if need be and that'll be hidden. As I type this I'm just starting the decreases on the crown. I think it'll be cute with one of my own design of blossoms on it. Love and hugs from north Texas. Edited to add: I think the adornment on that hat illustration might be a looped pompom. It's basically like making a regular yarn pompom without cutting the loops. Or like a very full tassel without cutting the loops but tied shorter. Does that make sense? After seeing it on you, I might add a couple extra rows to the crown so it can slouch and fold down a bit more. I have a habit of wearing my hair up and having a little extra slouch on top would work better for me. I'll try it on a few times as I work to check for fit. Might also do fewer decreases (maybe just every other row?) so it has more of a stove pipe shape to stack the pleats/folds better? I have recently been making a few of those long stocking caps (like Santa or elf caps) so I have gotten a better grasp on how to elongate these things now. Shaping my knit and crochet items is getting easier for me as I experiment with things. See, even old dogs can learn new tricks!

Definitely like the second one, and from a distance that line of changover colour actually is an attractive feature. I think it is meant to perch more vertically on the head to get the slouched look more, but it is cute that way too. As always, a worthwhile dip into vintage patterns!

I am thinking that the woman who made and wore this would have had long hair to hold the top of the hat higher to achieve the slouchy look. I also have shorter hair so if I make it, I will have to find a long haired model.

@@krisrandall7075 Funny you should say this. I made the hat, and I have long hair. I found that the hat slips up when I wear it over my hair when my hair is down. But when I take my hair and sort of make it into a bun, then stuff it up into the hat, the hat stays on wonderfully! Is that what you mean?

If possible, please show stills up close of your scanned instructions from each page at the end of the video tutorial so we can follow along with both the video and instructions as well as the photo of the finished stitches. I also find it hard to see especially when it’s not possible to enlarge on YT. I take screenshots from your video to work with (I always delete them at the end and I don’t share them online, of course). I’ve learned to watch the whole video before beginning but, I still find myself missing things when fast forwarding and rewinding, esp when I don’t go back to double check instructions, (like turning my work! lol I’m so negligent about it! Smh 🤦🏼‍♀️) I love seeing your whole process and working out the kinks. I’m glad you leave it all in your video! It’s so relatable and helpful to see this. ❤❤❤

Really love the second color peaking through the stitches in the first. Doing this with a couple very pale blues or creamy colors might make it look shadowed! I've seen people weave in those little jewelry pearls or fake diamonds into designs like this too so each crest has a little sparkle and that seems like another way to make that color transition a positive rather than a negative! Just add bling to it!

As a fairly new crocheter, I’m actually thankful about the backpost confusion- I have a couple of patterns I want to work eventually that has backpost/front post stitches, but don’t explain them! I’m sure I’ll end up looking up a tutorial on KZbin, but seeing you work through it has definitely cleared it up for me :)

OMG, I thought me only going 'mad' about crochet or knitting descriptions, because it is foreign language to me and different meaning, but I see myself in you and its makes two of us 😂😂😂 Feels like you are breaking some secret code and can be proud of yourself when it is done. We have very simple words,no treble or quadruple, because if you have to do 7 yarns over on the one stitch, how you would call it? We call it very straightforward: 'stitch without twist, stitch with 1 twist, stitch with 2 twists',etc... No messing around :) This is why I prefer diagrams, but in modern relief crochet they can be difficult to read too.

Hi Corrina and group. I’m making the hat right now, in Merino. I’m working on the Bee Hive! Lol. Once I got used to pulling up those loops, it got much easier. Such a cute hat! Can’t wait to see what you do for the flower since I haven’t finished the video yet.

I wonder if that daisy tuft is just a basic tuft. But I can't imagine that. By the time you added enough thread for petals it would end up looking like a pompom. Well, now I am intrigued . I will now be obsessively trying to figure out this flower. Oh geeze!

I've seen some similar vintage hats and they showed the decoration on the side. I usually don't do pompoms or other doodads but if it was tall enough I might gather a few rows. Looks good anyway.

Nice, I'm definately going to give this pattern a go, maybe with my own spin. I may start at the top with the 15 treble (double crochet) in a magic circle and work down.

Smart!! I don’t know why that wouldn’t work. Lovely idea! I don’t see why anyone would need to turn either except when you start the brim(if your working from the top to the bottom.

Definately meant to be longer and sunched together with a carnation. I can't wait to try it. I agree the Sunflower was too much but I love them. I was surprised you had all that hair under your hat! It's growing thick and fast! Thank you for these vintage video's. You are the best. ❤

I agree, it's definitely meant to be longer < I followed the instructions but it just didn't translate into what the awesome drawing looks like , and thank you! yeah, now that the length is gone , it's growing in so much better ( with lots of gray lol ) I think I'm gonna keep it pretty short like this for a while as I'm still about that wig life when I go out lol

Just add another round since it's only scrunchies in the front. Great job once again, I don't think you realize just how entertaining this is, we get to go through the "frustration" of figuring out the pattern. 🎉😅

This has been SO interesting! And funny (sorry). One thing I might say is that when using a vintage pattern written out the way yours seems to be (one BIG paragraph), is to rewrite it out, line or round by round. Makes it easier to follow, count and see what you are doing. Patterns like this one, written in one few swoop, are why my kids thought I was practicing witchcraft, deciphering the strange wording. Not so sure they don't still think I am a witch, but at a certain point, we want to stop deciphering and translating, and just stitch the patterns! The hat is very cute, btw, altho it looks more flapper than Victorian.

I used a 5mm with worsted weight and it turned out a bit loose and abovee my ears. I ended up taking it apart, adding 5 rows to the hat before the decrease rows and I still don't have the height to scrunch the front. I plan to leave the the flower off.

I'm 6mo late, but leaving a comment anyways. 😁 Mom tried teaching me how to crochet ~30yrs ago, and I either didn't have the patience for it, she was an impatient teacher, or more likely both. 15yrs later, my oldest brother (who's now almost 53) managed to semi-successfully teach me. He learned it from one of his best friends (a tall, muscular dude you'd never expect to be caught dead with a hook), and after I learned how to make a bouquet of flowers for mom as a mother's day gift, I lost interest. Last year, I picked up a hook and yarn again and went looking for tutorials and patterns on YT (I'm a visual learner with eye issues, and I think I'm a little obsessed lol). I've sent my oldest brother to all of your doily videos, as those are his favorite thing to do. My dad's girlfriend, as well as my second-oldest brother's wife have asked me to teach them, and I'm going to be sending them your way before too long. The point of all that rambling is this: there are plenty of dudes who crochet, and it doesn't make a man any less of a man if he does. The whole "if you give a man a fish..." thing applies here. :) ❤

Love the first and second hat agree don't care for the sunflower. I think the original flower was an uncut pompom not tightly wound. When doing the backpost crochet stitch I find that pinching the 2 stitches together on the back side before insetting the hook helps me from splitting the yarn and getting tangled on the working yarn. Not a fail A success!!!!!

So . . . . I've been working on this a bit and decided to "give my brain a break" by working on a different vintage pattern for a hat. Just a few lines printed out on a scrap of (what I presume) is a piece torn from a newspaper or pamphlet. It fell out of a bag of assorted yarn I purchased at a yard sale. No illustration. Hubs found me some hours later muttering at my desk. "Who are you talking to? I know it's not Jaxzon (my desk cat) because she's out here." "Just trying to figure out this old crochet pattern. They always write them to be so vague and assume you know what they mean. Plus they use UK terms which is not what we use here today, PLUS they used different materials that we can't easily identify or equate today, and THEN there's MATH involved. Which is always so helpful." He laughed hard at that last point. "Oh. I didn't realize what you did was so complicated. Looks nice though." He has no idea how much this stuff contributes to continued mental health for senior ladies, nor how much akin to flying a spaceship this stuff can get. Bless his heart.

Try making lots of loops of wool, as though you were making a pompom, but dont cut the loops. then tie it in the middle fold in half to make thicker pompom of loops tie the bottom loops and stitch it just above the border. Not sure if it'll work but worth a try.
