Hello everyone it’s Roger, aka Mr. Smartie pants 😂. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for the wonderful comments, and mostly for all the kindness and genuine support this community has shown my sister. She’s an amazing woman and a great blessing in my life everyday ! Look forward to the next showdown at the crochet corral 🙈🥰

This is a good example of why patterns that start out saying something like "Chain in multiples of X plus Y" work out so much better for most people. Having a repeating motif, one can count the number of stitches required to complete the motif once, then add whatever number of chains needed to start a row at the proper stitch height. It's so much harder to explain in just words than it is with pictures and words together. I *think* this is going to work out in multiples of 8 plus 4, but I'm going to need to test it out to be sure. Things get so much more complicated when switching stitches/patterns part way through, and then the additional complication of going from back-and-forth rows to in-the-round work. Then there are the usual variances of yarn and hook size, individual gauge (how tension affects the size) and how exacting your "square" must be to satisfy your own eye. Experience and a good eye go a long way towards making these types of patterns work out in a way that doesn't break your brain while still looking nice. Sometimes you just gotta wing it! It'll be ok. It's not like we are carving things in stone here. You can always pull it out and try again. I'll play with this and report back if I come up with a solid recommendation on the starting chain count. It's too hot here to do a full day in the garden, so I'll have some time to play with it.

When/if you decide to work this out, will you put the answer here as a comment so it's easier to find in the thread of comments? Thanks. I am gonna try it but I don't know if I can do it. It looks like they have 3 spaces in between each shell in the photo, that said, some look a bit different. A woman, back then, would be able to figure it by reading the pattern and looking at the photo before she ever started it. It also might have been oblong by having one row less than square to make the stitches play out right all the way around. Good project to hone some skills for writing my own patterns!
@MaryAnnMakes
@MaryAnnMakes Жыл бұрын
How would you then know how many rows? I would think a set number of rows would be easier to deal with to get "square* or even a multiple of rows.... I dunno.

It seems to need a multiple of 5 + 4 filet squares on each side when the main square is done and you start the edging. So, chain a *multiple of 10 + 9* (then start next row with the extra chain 4 added to that for the first *dc ch1*) Work until approximately a square with a multiple of 5 + 4 rows. I haven’t tried it yet as I’m trying to finish another project first but I’ll definitely try. (this is my best guess but I absolutely could be wrong)

In terms of ease and understandable, YOURS. Prettier? Rogers! I applaud your efforts on this one, for sure! You amaze me, taking all that nonsense and translating it for us into small, bite-sized chunks. You rock! YAY for Spanish Barbie shawls! Hugs

My my my.....I love this beautiful shawl and may make it for my sister. Kudos to Roger for his good taste. And I love the beautiful little sachet - I may enlarge it to a purse for myself. Kudis to you Corrina for your good taste. Sounds like you two need to treat the family to a big family dinner! Bring on more duals! Thank you for another excellent tutorial!

I *really* tried to be objective, but I'll give BOTH patterns a double 👍👍... If you held my hooks hostage until I decided, I'd have to pick the shawl as the pattern has both a fast workup part (yea!) and gorgeous detail (ooooh!). I make both pocket-based things AND shawls and I love 'em both equally! ❤❤❤ But what I love more is that this is a family thing, with your son prepping the mysteries and Roger coming to play with us. That is my favorite thing of all. 💁‍♀️🙋‍♂️🙆

I agree! It is Roger's fault! If you can't blame your sibling, who can you blame? J/K. While the shawl is lovely, I do like the small sachet you made the best. It seems to be more useful than the shawl and not so fiddly. So in my mind, you win!

This is such a beautiful shawl! It's almost unfair to choose, because even if this was Roger's pick, the video and the company is all you, which is always pleasant and fun to watch 🥰 I must say, however, I'm very partial to the sachet. I'm almost done with mine and it's just such a lovely thing 💕💖 So if I gotta cast a vote, I say you win!

I liked both patterns on their own, but taken side by side and being asked to choose? I think Rogers pattern might have looked better if it was all one colour, for me it was just too busy. Therefore, the sachet gets my vote, as there was nothing I didn't like about that one, it was gorgeous!

This mini-shawl is beautiful! For a full size version, I guess a 2 metres wide brown center square should be enough for covering the shoulders and be fold on the chest. Would you do it in full size? Maybe in only one colour that you have in you stock^^

So I just had a lightbulb moment. Because these projects are both very beautiful, you could always make them a set. You could add the medallions on satchel to match the shawl Or add the ruffles & medallions to the satchel. Or add the satchel flowers/bows around the shawl to match. Have the colors the same. I know the satchel is a chevron & the shawl is shells which is different styles of stitches, but they would be unique with some similarities. 🤣I’m trying here. 🤣🤣🤣 Both are so beautiful. You both had great picks. Thank you both ✌🏻🫶🏻😀

The patterns are so different, a side by side comparison isn't exactly fair. They are both beautiful in their right. That being said, this is my personal fave. But I'm biased; I love lacy, ruffley things and am personally not a big fan of chevrons - with the one exception of round star blankets. Size wise, I think this is more of an American Girl dream shawl 😂 Thanks for sharing your beautiful creations with us! I always look forward to watching your videos, and love your mystery patterns. Maybe we can look forward to more sibling pick videos? 💜

I liked the shawl best. I just have to say it. I am not a chevron fan but I have a friend who is and i may make a little sachet for her. She sews, so, I will let her so the lining and I will give her some lavender and rose petals from my garden to place in it and then she can put it in one of her drawers probably where her "drawers" are. 😂 I do wish you had made the "bobbles" like the pattern said on the edge of the shawl, even just a few, to see what they looked like worked up. I think the bobble stitch would have made a cute edge, with rounded balls instead of flat double crochets. But, I guess I'll have to work it up and see. I love the shawl!!!

(I was typing and it disappeared!) I like Roger's shawl. I made a triangular shawl very similar some years ago. It was meditative as each section repeats for a significant number of rows. I like your sachet as it's a small piece and I like the modern touch of the back lines and the variation you worked for the edging. Both pieces are beautiful. Because the sachet is a small piece and something I've not worked before, it edges into the winner's circle by a thread! 9:06 Looking forward to the next head to head!

Hi Corinna, my Mom and I love watching you and your channel. She's 86 years old (a master at crochet) and she taught me to crochet when I was about 10. Mom loves tiny crochet with small hooks like you do on your vintage challenges. We watch you together and have the best time. She designed and crocheted 4 gorgeous framed Christmas Trees for me and my siblings --- and she has asked me to send pictures to you because you enjoy and understand intricate crochet. She believes you will appreciate seeing the little "ornaments" she made for her project. Is there a way I can do this for her? Can I please email pictures to you? Thank you so much and keep up the excellent work you do to show others the joy of crochet. You're so fun to watch and quite an inspiration for all generations.
