The blue blade is a broken HSS fine-toothed power hacksaw blade for metal. It was used to make other tools that hold an edge. And it's not a bench dog - it's a dovetail marking gauge.

The little "bench dog" isn't a bench HOOK for sawing things on. If you look, the edges are angled. It's a template for marking out the angles on the pins of dovetails. Reversible, by flipping it over. The Mathieson tools are from Mathieson's tool company in Glasgow. The wierd Millers Falls bracket in with the augers looks like a depth stop to clamp on the shank of an auger. The long thin blades look like they're a set (or a collection) of moulding plane blades. Incredible tools.

I believe what you called a benchdog is a gauge used for marking out dovetails...all hand work...that box is better then finding gold ...just spectacular...i am glad they will be preserved and not lost...thank you...stay safe.... In the drill bit roll out that one item is a depth gauge I believe... My guess...to me priceless...

At 3:20 your "sextant" is a wing divider. (Also called a leather compass when used to mark leather by cutting a shallow groove in it.) I expect the screw in one leg has replaced the thumbscrew that ought to be there. It can be used on other materials, including for marking out steel if marking out fluid has been painted on it. The thumbscrew (or its replacement) reduces the chance of losing its setting while you are marking with it.

That blue high speed steel blade is from a mechanical saw for metal cutting. It would make an awesome knife. My first knife my grandpa gave me when i turned eleven he made it from one of those, that steel will stay sharp for ages. You just have to be careful not to pry anything as it might snap on you :) You should try to make it into a knife

At 2:56, you have a repurposed machine hacksaw blade (cut short, probably because it got broken or was worn, hence a hole in only one end) which has had its teeth ground off (note the remains of the wavy edge along the bottom edge.) The hook ground into the right hand end is either for raking out narrow slots or for use as a scriber. The remains of the wavy edge is most obvious to the right of your thumb at 3:00.

At 4:02, you have a broken machine hacksaw blade. The clue is the "11 TPI" (teeth per inch) marking visible between your thumb and forefinger at 4:05, and the hint of the remains of a wavy edge where the teeth have been ground off. That hint is the slightly shiny patches along the edge of the blade's face, and, as your turned it towards us, I thought I saw a glimpse of the remains of the ground-off teeth along the narrow edge.

Great buy. I have got to liking the box wood foldable rulers. I have came across 3 of them at a flea market but not sure if they are worth what they are asking. They don't have the level in them and they are asking 12 US each. Any ideas. Thanks

The ruler with the level in it typically sells for $100 on ebay. The other plain rules are nice but you can usually pick them up for next to nothing if you're patient. Or buy a new one.

Unbelievable collection would have to say £270 top brands, love sorby chisels, and my favourites out of that collection has to be the mallets, shame about the planes but then looking at the collection it wouldn’t surprise me if they where Norris planes which are worthy a small fortune

That "bench dog" looks a much more like a dovetail marking guide to me

Not a sextant... A sextant is used for navigation. That's a divider, for marking repeating measurements. If it's curved, it's a gouge, not a chisel. Your little 'bench dog' is actually for marking dovetails. The mortice gauge has two adjustable pins. The marking gauge has only one.

I think Mr Neve spent time in the US as the saws, Miller Falls, Irwin U.S. are quality tools but unusual in the UK. My guess is £500 but worth more.

The chisels and gouges I would say 10 bucks each x 50 for $500. The saws, another $50, $25 for the rule with the level. $100 for the misc rest and $100 for the chest itself so lets round it up to an even $800. Oops forgot the auger bits. I'm not into them, but if that is close to a complete set of Millers Falls I would go $50 more for a grand total of $850. I would spend that any day of the week for such a treasure trove.

Of course I was drooling over the plethora of gouges and chisels. So in a bidding war I would probably throw reason out the window and pay more just to get them for myself. I used to gather those blades up at the rail-yard, they were used in a cutting machine that was clamped to the iron rail to cut it to length.. Very high temper steel.

You wouldn’t think but, the most valuable item might be the bronze head infilled mallet.! Check out the H O Studley toolbox on the web or here on KZbin. The highest bid in the comments wasn’t even close to what everything was worth. It a Shame to separate anything away from the chest from originally found.

The first "Miscellaneous" piece of High Speed Steel you pulled out looks very much like a used Power Hacksaw Blade that has been re-purposed for another use - possibly some type of scraper to get into cracks or joints judging by the hook on one end. The second piece of High Speed Steel you pulled out also looks like a used Power Hacksaw Blade, again likely re-purposed for anther use. The item you guessed as being a sextant, is definetly not a sextant - it is a pair of Dividers - used to scribe circles, the same way as you would draw a circle with a compass and pencil. Suggest that you take the opportunity to do some research on what you have in that box, because at this stage I do not think that you are worthy of possessing those antique tools.

Well over a grands worth of tools there Ben. All high quality tools from what I’m guessing was a master craftsman. I would say about £500 but if it’s the same guy that you bought the tool haul from recently for £400, he’s dead cheap, so I’m gonna guess £150 for the lot.
