my guy i didn't actually watch the vid but to say Judo overthrew Jap JJ, is like saying the tires on a truck overthrew the engine. Judo is a political repercussion of dissecting JJ and was the only form of Jap JJ allowed regulated by the govt. Judo is Jap JJ, they need each other. throws, joint locks and choke holds. why would you seperate them? They had to legally, so this was able to be practiced legally without the newly formed govt having an issue with it.

One thing I always postulated was that judo wasn’t necessarily “superior” but was more evolved for the modern era. Old systems were mainly built to complement swordsmanship and melee weaponry. So things like ground fighting and other nuances of unarmed combat never developed to a great extent. Whereas the newer judo was specifically built for unarmed fighting. Thoughts?

Since judo is comprised of techniques of jujutsu, what I believe is superior is the training method. Judo emphasizes randori and resistance to ensure your techniques will work against an assailant. Jujutsu has too many pre coreocraphed techniques with minimal resistance, which in my opinion violates Seiryoku zenyo because it’s not the most efficient way to train and yield results. And for fun, check out kime no kata and Kodokan goshin jitsu and you’ll see judo did have some answers for armed assailants! Again, you don’t see that much though because of judos emphasis on randori and shiai

Some Jiu Jitsu was designed for fighting an opponent in battle armour. More modern styles (eg Fusen) adapted techniques for street self defence. Judo comes from jiu Jitsu and is generally without the JJ techniques that maim or kill an opponent. Judo is still an effective martial art though. I did hear that the contest was under Judo rules - which automatically hampered the effectiveness of jiu jitsu.

Thank for you sharing this! Too few people--even in Judo--know of this watershed event, which was a "do-or-die" proposition for the Kodokan. Had they not done so well, Kodokan Judo would have faded into obscurity. Incidentally, Saigo left the Kodokan to spare Kano-shihan from embarrassment because he had gotten into a brawl with some men, whom he defeated, while Prof. Kano was away. Unfortunately, one or two of those men turned out to be police officers. Saigo relocated to Nagasaki and stopped training in Judo altogether. However, following Saigo's death, Prof. Kano promoted him posthumously to 6th Dan.

According to Dr. Erwin Baelz, a personal physician to the the Japanese Imperial family, who lived in Japan between1876-1905, Kano and the college students were no match for Totsuka and his students. Dr Bael wrote: " Meanwhile, however, some of the students and ex-students of the university had taken up Jujutsu. The young professor Kano was especially active in the matter, and to him the renewed popularization of the old sport is especially due. He and his comrades were at length successful in inducing the university authorities to summon the jujutsu expert from Chiba and a great jujutsu contest took place. This made it clear how much training is needed to learn the art, for all the young men who had been working at it in Tokyo, not one, not even Kano, could cope with the police officers who had been trained by Totsuka in Chiba" The quote above can be found in the book Awakening Japan (p.74) written by Dr. Baelz. Book was published in 1935.

The information in this video is incorrect and very biased. We must remember that Kano never said that he created something new and in fact he always stated that Judo is Jujitsu. The main reason he created Judo was because so many people were dying or suffering massive injuries training jujitsu especially in the matches they held in Japan. He wanted to make it safer to train so he removed a lot of the very lethal techniques and also the striking for the most part and made it friendlier and more gentle. He got tired of hearing people speak so negatively about Jujitsu and the students of it calling it unnecessarily brutal and a blood sport. Jujitsu took on a very ugly reputation for a long time in Japan and it started to die down, so Kano wanted to save it from its ugly reputation and make a more peaceful form of Jujitsu. At first he even called it by its name and just put his name over it, “Kano Jujitsu” but it was still received with negativity because of the name so he found a way to still keep the name and meaning of it but slightly changed it. Judo is the gentle way, and Jujitsu is the gentle art. It’s all Jujitsu and Kano always kalled him self a Jujitsuka. He simply utilized certain techniques and discarded others. Judo is Jujitsu though.

Yes sir. And remember, those matches you spoke of in your video were fought with Judo federation rules and restrictions, but true Jujitsu has no rules and that’s why so many people died and were seriously injured in the time this was all going on. That’s like putting a muzzle on a dog and sending it to fight another dog. Same thing goes for BJJ. Modern BJJ has become a cult and a sport, and the practitioners swear by it saying that no student of Judo or Japanese Jujitsu stands a chance against even a Blue belt in BJJ because it’s so superior, and you see competitions where BJJ students beat Judo and Japanese Jujitsu all the time(and vice versa also) but the BJJ tournaments are fought with loads of restrictions and ironically even Judo has less restrictions than BJJ most of the time. Turn the tables and put a BJJ student in a Judo tournament, or even worse a real full contact Japanese Jujitsu tournament and they will get annihilated. Japanese Jujitsu tournaments leave the contestants with broken noses, bloody ears and cuts on the face, concussions, and even broken bones. It’s brutal. It’s street self defense that still works today. Judo does too, but if we are completely honest with ourselves Jujitsu is a bigger dog without a muzzle. Truly in a no holds bar full contact fight, Judo can’t win. It is Jujitsu, but only part. It’s incomplete and that is why it is a sport now. You don’t see self defense Judo schools anywhere, but there is self defense Jujitsu all over and it’s brutally effective. Anyways, thanks for the video, and please take this into consideration when making videos like this one. And please don’t be offended my friend. I happen to favor Judo because I’m a peaceful Christian and don’t want to punch anyone’s teeth out, but I’m a Blue belt in Japanese Goshin newaza Jujitsu and if I need to punch someone’s teeth out I’m trained to do so😋. Thanks again my friend

I used to train Japanese Jujutsu in Sweden a long time ago. Reading the history it seems to have come to Sweden in 1905. I am not sure how much it changed over the years and which school the style taught in Sweden was originally but it sort of looks like a blend of Judo and Karate. That is, it looks to me that Judo is Jujutsu but with the striking aspects removed, much like BJJ is Judo but removed the throwing aspects. Removed might be the wrong way to describe it, perhaps it is better to describe it as if the other techniques remained but was ignored. Many of our better practitioners cross-trained either Judo or Karate if they wanted to improve that aspect of their ‘game’. I think the various arts change a lot with how and if they have competition. We had straight punches to the face but this was not allowed in competition where you could only punch with the back-hand to the face. This rule had the side-effect that many were not very good at punching. My instructor left the national organization as a result of this and formed his own style where the Karate aspect was replaced with what looks like standard kick-boxing combined with Judo. We always trained the newaza (floor game). From this video I can’t help wondering if it was Judo that won or if it was the tournament rules that favored the judo techniques or if the technique was better pressure tested by the Judokas in comparison to the jujutsu practitioners.

Zero mention of strikes, (small) joint locks, and other nasty techniques that are a part of Jujutsu but not Judo. Victories seem to be by throw or choke. Actually, there's a mention on the Wiki that challenge matches often ended in serious injury or death in that time period, but the Tokyo Police didn't want that. So that would seem to reinforce the match being played by safer Judo rules. Was Judo which focussed on being safer and not brutally murdering opponents the better martial art for the Police? Hahaha yes!

The video is a little misleading. There were hundreds of styles of jiujitsu in Japan during the Meiji Restoration, all with varying degrees of ground, throws, striking, off balancing. Even Kano from two completely different schools of jiujitsu. To say judo was superior to jiujitsu is an argument that is fundamentally flawed. PS In Kurosawa's Sugata Sanshiro part II, the Karateka represent Mataemon Tanabe, even though Tanabe's was a jiujitsuka and their styles were completely different.

Like the initial BJJ matches initially set up so Gracie would win. Real jujitsu has many strikes indeed some throws are done with the strike. I am a 3 rd Dan in Judo and I practice changing the Judo throws back to the jujutsu ways to make it effective i a real fight situation. I good ukemi practitioner can get up after being throw by Judoka not true in jujutsu I suspect the Judo like now was more accustomed to randori than the other schools due to the danger of death Once the rules were established Judo had the advantage. It was all political. The advantage that judo has it that it can be practiced at full speed with minimum danger that what Kano did by cleaning it up. Once the students masters speed then the lethal stuff from jujutsu can be added. When you throw by breaking an arm it is very dangerous to go full speed That match was very political. I have a copy of the movie done in 1960,s. there a few remakes. no martial artist is complete without practicing nagewaza at full speed and that was kano’s greatest contribution .

I’d say more modernized than sport, even though since 1964 it’s been a sport. It’s arguably much more effective for self defense because of the emphasis on sparring and live training. When Kano developed judo he said it had 3 purposes: to cultivate productive and moral citizens, fitness, and self defense. The idea of making it a sport came later.

@Chadi Kano system of judo wasn't a question of judo being superior to jujutsu. Kano revamp jujutsu because it was frowned upon, at the time by the elites as a un safe form of martial arts that was predominantly use by gangsters of the time. further more JUDO is jujutsu just in sport form and is safer to practice, which in turn revitalized the art form. I think you needed to go little more deeper on your research in terms of the sociology aspect of your video. its slightly misleading telling people that kano was trying to create something more superior when in fact he was actually creating something for sport.

The sport argument is so false, back when the shogunate was still very much thriving and japan was united, jujutsu sport competitions were held all the time in Japan, minus the eye gouging and weapons, to say judo is a sport jujutsu is simply wrong, he complimented jujutsu greatly in many other ways.

@@Chadi yes he did compliment jujutsu, that is correct. but your making it seem like he was teaching something more superior, when in fact he never stoped teaching Kito Ryu or Ten shin sho jujutsu, he taught judo and jujutsu side by side. although judo prevailed most of the time, against their challengers, they had a hard time fighting people of the jujutsu system FUSEN RYU JUJUTSU, because of the ankle and leg locking. Judo of Headmaster Kano is not the Sport-Judo of today, that's for sure. So, for anyone who is watching this excellent film by our friend Chadi, do keep this in mind... Real Judo is more akin to traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu any day of the week, and a far cry from the "Sports Judo" with so many rules that keep on changing and changing and changing, and believe me there is financial interests in competitions, Judo Gi, Match events, endorsements, and the list goes on and on and on.... Like Muey Thai, Western Boxing, BJJ, MMA, it's all entertainment with lots of money involved to be made by all associated with it... Wonder if there are still dojos that still teach the "original Judo of the Grand Master Kano" on this planet...

So true. I have seen judo change so much and not for the better. Several locks have been taken out, the ways one can grab an opponent have changed, time to hold the opponent pinned has come down...I understand taking the kami-basami out of a sports event as it was prone to causing injuries, same for wristlocks, but grabbing a leg for a throw, 'one sided grip' standing locks and chokes, it is a shame those are no longer allowed. ALL of my favorite techniques and my own variations of them like kata-guruma (in different variations), variations of morote-seoi-nage, te-guruma, o-uchi-maki-komi while grabbing a leg (or belt) and so on now seem to have been forbidden in competition, as well as several of my countering techniques. Luckily all of them can still be used when training the traditional jiu-jutsu.

I think there are likely many different circumstances that played a role in why judo did so well vs jujutsu. Such as what rules was the contest held under, the training methods of the different schools, and the general movement of all martial arts distancing themselves from the killing aspects for several hundred years after the end of the Sengoku period due to the relative constant peace of the Edo period. I don't dislike Judo by any means, but a Sengoku period practitioner would've likely had different results vs the more modern Judo. In today's world I would prefer Judo over things like BJJ.

Oh give me a break! Kano practiced Judo and Jujitsu. His student Mifune practiced both Judo and Ju Jitsu. His student Frank Goody practiced both Judo and Ju Jitsu. Frank Goody taught both Judo and Ju Jitsu to his students here in the Denver Area. In fact the video you are showing is Isitsu which is taught to our Ju Jitsu black belts. Judo is a sport! I've not seen any Judo throw or hold that doesn't come from Ju Jitsu. How can Judo be more effective than Jujitsu when it is nothing more than a set of restrictions on Ju Jitsu? I recognize the value of studying both but to say one is more effective than another is a misstatement. BTW Yama Arashi is called the Mountain Storm throw. It was Mifune's knick name; given to him because it was said he came at his opponents like a Mountain Storm. It's also the name of our dojo here in Denver.
