1890 /1910 Quail Railroad Cuckoo Clock

Hi, Mike! New subscriber. I love your work so much! As for the carved leaf topper, I just watched, "Don't buy a cuckoo clock," by rewboss. At 1:27/5:53, there is a picture of a Rail Road cuckoo clock that has a leaf-design topper. Also, in the same picture, you can see the two finials at the bottom of the clock, on either side, just like the ones you added to your clock. I know you probably know all of this, and have seen it a million times, but was just thinking about you and your clock! Thank you for all of your videos. I enjoy each and every one!

The first topper I carved for the other Rail Road clock was too thick, but at least it has one now. The more carving I do, the better I am getting at it. I can adjust the hammer back a little more to make it a little softer, but it is a bold clock, that is for sure. I decided to show all the things that could trouble you, when working on a clock. There are a lot of things that might not go as planned that most keep out of the video. Some clocks just take more time that others. You have a great one, thanks for watching and God Bless.

Very impressive work. It looks like you spent many hours working on this one, and overcame several issues. I have a similar age, similar size cuckoo quail waiting for me to work on. Mine just has leaves as decorations. It looks like from what you ran into that the hardest part is sequencing the cuckoo side and quail side, which looks fiendishly complex. One of these years I'm going to take a deep breath and try to fix mine.

The first issue was because the movement was so dirty, I couldn't really see how to take the levers off the movement. It took me a little time but the time was well worth it. Thanks so much for stopping in Paul Dyck

My first one I bought, I didn't even know what the second cuckoo bird was for until I started the clock up. Back when I bought it, the clock was cheap and I don't think they even knew anything about the clock either. Thanks for watching Jason Lawrence and keep your eyes out for a Quail clock.

Even though the time side gears would fall out, I didn't worry about them until I had my two sides done with the birds. The main thing was getting the warning pins far enough apart from the stop lever, but not too far. This clock did take some time, but well worth my efforts. Thanks for watching Robert Horneman

I see clocks all the time on ebay that are coming from the UK that I would love to own. Lots and lots of antique cuckoo clocks. Maybe they are just for sale on ebay as they get more money off of them. Either way I would love to be back in time to 1999 when I was married and living in the UK where I started my clock journey.

Goodwill action site I do believe sell the clocks to Canada as well, and there you can see what the shipping prices are before you bid. There are a lot of clocks here for sale, but most of the people selling them want way to much for a non-working clock that they found at a garage sale or thrift store for a couple of bucks.

I had a great big comment. About 5 minutes before the video was done it locked up. I had to reset and so my comment went away. I am going to see if I can recall what I typed. Here it goes. GK movement. George Kuehl. There is controversy when GK came to the US and set up shop. The NAWCC postings that are in both of my groups say in 1908. Afterall their trademark was approved in January 1909. However I have a video on a book that I took pictures of at a clock meet with Ron Rosencrans. That book is a reprint of a 1904 catalog. It has GK clocks for sale in it. GK didnt make clocks they only sold clocks. They purchased clocks from their friends in Germany. Due to duty taxes those clocks would be taken apart and shipped to the US. So they didnt have to pay as much duty tax if at all. I feel that some of the clocks could be older than 1904 and as early as 1880. I would like to know what the plates thickness measurements are. The NAWCC also has a posting that says that GK marked the cases around the dial "Made in Germany Kuehl Clock Co Chicago Ill" in 1908 and earlier. After that they makred the dials a different way if at all. My cuckoo quail has that markings on it. My plates are 3.5 mm thick. My E Schmeckenbecher cuckoo quail clock is 2.5 mm thick. Schmeckenbecher was from 1948-1996. I feel that that clock movement could have sat on a shelf for a few years before they started making clocks. I have a Hubert Herr cuckoo quail clock that I know was made in the 1950s that the thickness of the plates are 1.5 mm thick. Vintage/modern clocks are 1 mm thick. I feel that you could almost date a clock by the thickness of the plates. I will measure my 1880ish Alexander Fleig clock the next time I have it on my stand. The movement has nuts. My Alexander Flieg clock that Valentin Weber told me the date has nuts. So it is very possible that the date could be from 1880ish or so. You did a great job in repairing this clock. The older cuckoo quail clocks only cuckoo on the top of the hour to my knowledge I dont believe they would cuckoo on the half hour. I typically would say dont pain the birds but in this case where you had to make awing then yes painting would be the way to cover up new wood. In the Featured items above in both my groups I have ebay ads on GK clocks. What is nice about these ads is that they can be printed to scale. That is what I did to my clock at my local news paper company. They printed and taped them together as it took 3 or 4 sheets to print it and it cost me less than $2. Lot cheaper than what I would have to spend with new ink for my printer and then having the right computer program such as CAD Draw to print them to scale. I would suggest that you look for your clock in those ads and print the ad to scale that way you can trace the topper using carbon paper onto some wood to cut it out. That is what Steve Faler did to fix my missing parts. Yes the bellows would have been trapezoid bellows but it doesnt really matter. Great job with this video Mike. Great clock. I love it. Nice! I just bought a very similar clock. Did you ever make the topper? I'm not going to try and carve the topper. I found some unfinished pieces on eBay. It could be tough to get the new wood to look like old wood and match the stain.

I have two of these. One is a cuckoo and one is a cuckoo quail. The cuckoo has beautiful inlaid strips. The cuckoo quail is dark and hard to see the design. Can you explain what the denatured alcohol does with the steel wool? Is it just for cleaning as you go?

The Denatured Alcohol I use for a slow stripper of a clear finish. The more you use, the faster it strips. Others use it on scratches to the finish. Using a little on a cloth and it melts the finish enough to fill it back in. On your Quail clock, Mine was sprayed over with a Varnish and darken the (Inlaid Strips), even though I so believe that is paper, not inlaid strips. I could be wrong. I went over my inlaid strips to lighten them up so you could see them. Just keep an eye on them if you do use the Denatured Alcohol and use a 000 or 0000 steel wool.

As far as the bellows top shape, the rectangle may be correct. My cuckoo quail only had the high note bellow and it was a rectangle top. My other cuckoo had the trapezoid tops. So I ordered trapezoid topped bellows to replace the missing one-intending to replace both. The high note trapezoid top would hit the quail bellow top-not enough room. So I'm guessing the rectangular tops were used on the cuckoo quail clocks due to space issues.
