I learned to sew in my Mother's most prized possessions: Singer sewing machine, foot pedal operated. It was the traditional black & gold. Hers was in a beautiful cabinet -- walnut? Or, just the stain. It was heavy & sturdy. Mother was born in 1919, married in 1944. I assume she bought the singer before she married? Absolutely no penny to spare when I was growing up. I am the youngest of 5; Mother was youngest of 7! I remember carefully opening the top of the cabinet & lifting the machine into place to sew.

Great job on bringing big Bertha back to working condition Nick. My grandmother was a seamstress in the 1920’s and worked on one of these machines. As a little girl, it was my job to turn the handle for her while she sewed. It’s a special memory for me. Those machines will go on forever as long as they are cared for.

I have two electric modern sewing machines and a 1905 singer hand crank that was given to me by a friend. I learnt basic sewing skills as a young girl under the supervision of my auntie on her old hand crank making simple skirts..I do a fair deal of sewing many years later but give me the old singer every time. Amazing how it dealt with thick towels that I had and needed some TLC. my machine threads left to right.

My father was a tailor for Hector Powe in Aberdeen and had this machine. When we were kids we would listen to him using the treadle sewing machine up in the bedroom making kilts for private clients. Singer sewing machines are almost indestructible.

Perfect! My grandmother's namesake is back to work, and for a good cause! My grandmother (born in 1912) inherited her Singer treadle machine from her own mother (married in 1901), and we all had our first sewing lessons on it. Oh, I also read that if we hit like at the beginning of the video, YT blows us off as a bot and it doesn't count on the algorithm. Best to wait till half way through or after to hit like. Blessed be, Magical Moons!

@rumakingthatup3 ай бұрын
There should be a C shaped small attachment to keep the thread close to the machine at the base of the needle, iirc
@JudithChestnut3 ай бұрын
I called it a loopy thing, but, yes, the thread needs to be caught so that it can maintain the tension and doesn’t billow out like a sail on a ship.

Hello Moons! What a wonderful job you did setting up that table for Bertha! Perfect! I have an industrial Singer I call "Beatrice" (the name of the granny who had her before me). Beatrice is a 96-40 model manufactured in Elizabeth, New Jersey around 1937. She'll go through about 8 layers of heavy denim, and I've used her to repair horse blankets and chaps. I also use her for quilting and simple alterations. She does it all! You just can't beat an old industrial Singer for jobs like this. Your laundry room is looking sensational. Those gorgeous windows let in so much light! Best wishes to all the Moons from Pennsylvania!

Dear Nick & Jenny back in my teens my mother in law had one of these old Singers only she had a sewing machine repair guy fit a belt just where you hand moves that wheel to manually move it back and forward and by doing that he was able to fit a foot peddle, beyond that I don’t know how he fitted that but I was reminded how my mother-in-law was able to sew for a living after her husband passed away and with that old Singer sewing machine she fed and clothed her six children, one of them is my husband. Amazing women. She unfortunately passed away but she was a wonderful strong women.

at 14:48 you can see a rusty scar where I believe another wire thread guide used to/ought to be, and a wear mark where the thread has rubbed. If there was another thread guide there it would keep the thread more vertical and prevent it ballooning out away from the needle which is going to cause a problem, I used to be a sailmaker so I am familiar with a lot of threading systems. it is normal to have one or 2 more thread guides than you have here I think Nick could easily recreate a suitable hooky thing to maintain the correct tension at this point

I have a 1890’s treadle sewing machine. I made my daughters wedding gown on it. My new Singer couldn’t handle the thickness of the heavy satin, but that old treadle could. FYI they do sell a hand crank for sewing machines. I have a Jones bullet bobbin machine with a hand crank too it just amazes me the engineering accomplished making these machines with no computers. They are remarkable pieces of equipment that just won’t die.

It will be such a relief to get through the pile of mending. Congratulations on bringing Big Bertha back to life to get the job done. My sister repairs antique sewing machines and she has a wonderful collection of them too. I have one here that is portable. I'm quite jealous of your custom sewing machine table. There is very little that you can't fix now. You can even sew leather if the holes are pre punched.
@tomwillis12643 ай бұрын
Freehand routing!!! If that had been me I would have little notches all over that tabletop. The finished work looks good though. I did not see any bobbins. With that being an industrial machine, is another way to replace a bobbin possible?

It’s powered by turning the wheel on the side by hand. With thick horse rugs that would be an advantage as you would need to sew slowly anyway.

my great-aunt had a singer that had a hinged arm. you could click it up so that it was horizontal- I suppose so you could change the needle easier. i was playing underneath it, jumped up, and split my forehead and nose down the middle! my poor aunt, she felt terrible, but it wasn’t that deep- no stitches. still have the scar, tho, 52 years later ❤
