Having a quick second shot available was something not every body on the Frontier enjoyed. I am the proud owner of a pair of reproduction 1733 French Cavalry pistols. This has been a Life Goal for me ever since 6 year old me saw an illustration of a couple of pirates climbing over the railing of a Spanish Galleon down in the Caribee! Enjoy that Dragoon of yours!

What I like about this video: There's a painstakingly detailed presentation of the equipment and the loading procedure for the pistol which is great for curious 21st century landlubbers like myself. Then there's your natural way of speaking without making loads of cuts in between sentences. And lastly of course, there's the fancy wardrobe. Thank you very much for your outstanding work, good sir.

Now that looks fun! Firearms are wonderful. I've been far too caught up in modern military weapons and have utterly ignored the old "brown gun" wooden weapons of the last generation military firearms. The truth is, as a kid I loved revolvers and lever actions - so, obviously, an even older generation. I've never had much fascination with muzzle loaders. But hat's off to you! You make it look fun. I'm asking myself, "Why haven't I done that?"

There's something I just love about the sort of "cadence" of flintlock guns, that loooooong delay (by modern standards) between the trigger pull and the gun firing. Idk what it is, but something about the "click, click-boom" you get with these guns just satisfies some strange anachro-itch in my brain. Old tech is brilliant.

Talking about riding up close to fire the pistols from close range, during the English Civil War (slightly earlier than American existing of course), the pistol armed cavalry would ride up to contact to use them. There's an account from a Parliamentary cavalryman at the time where he wrote, "I know that I hit him in the head, for I placed my pistole a-touching his helmet, and my shotte did take him away".

The War Office figured that such a pistol was shot 9-10 times in action. Most horse soldiers fired their pistols then pulled their sabres. The pistol might be dropped or the user killed. It is amazing that they had folks worried about statistics back in those days. In Vietnam, our Defense Dept still wanted to know how many men were killed without firing their rifle!

If the frizzen is sparking properly (one common problem on reproduction flintlocks is that the frizzen hasn't be hardened correctly), then your either using the wrong grade of power for your priming or more likely your touch hole needs opening up very slightly.

He was priming off his main load powder which is probably 3f or 2f unless he's using 4f as his main charge. 3F or 2F would harder to ignite than 4Fwith a spark, it can be done but reliability may slip a bit.

The frizzen is not sparking correctly (I'm working on alleviating that) and the tumbler and seer are not working together correctly. I'm using FF for everything and it doesn't have any issues catching if the lock produces adequate sparks. Thank you for your suggestions!

I might be mistaken, but I believe that the most common fashion of the era particularly with the hook was to wear the pistol so that the lock was actually pressed against the body so as to protect the charge in the pan from the elements. That's how a lot of images from the era show it anyway.

A early mechanism with almost in line cock with little to no curvature. The frizzen and pan spring etc are relatively the same as later pieces. The locks lack a bridle and generally are fixed on a large lockplate. Replacement locks or locks made to suit stock manufacture for wheelocks as cenral and eastern Europe were mass producing to counter the Ottoman threat and 30yrs war.

Never really had the chance to see one in person, but always wondered how the powder remains in the pan when ya close it. Doesn't look particularly securely pressured down whenever I see it in videos, but it obviously is when you can turn the thing to point the pan straight down to the ground without it just falling out. Just some tight fittings that kick into action when it goes far enough down?

Cuirassiers of 1500s had this type of pistol (granddaddy of dragoon pistol similar size, some longer) heavily with ornaments., fired from horseback. Dragoons are horsemen. 200 years (prior the ones in video type shows it had been favored by both foot and horsemen) I love these kind of horseback weapons.
@gorillaguerillaDK

Cuirassiers were typically heavy cavalry (armored cavalry - due to the cuirass/breastplate armor). Dragoons were typically filling the role of light/medium cavalry or mounted infantry. So reconnaissance, smaller skirmishes, harassing the enemy's flank or supply lines - or as infantry units with high mobility able to quickly go where they're needed. Other prominent types of classic Cavalry were the Uhlans and the Hussars...
