@dawsonmorgan92898 күн бұрын
Fun fact. you can use a steel ball bearing or slingshot ammo to create a hollow point round ball! After you load the lead ball in normally, take the steel ball and place it on top of the lead ball. Then use the loading lever to press the steel ball into the lead. I tried this out and couldn't believe the results. The ball only penetrated 9 inches into my homemade ballistic gell, but it completely flattened out to the side of a 13 gauge slug. Using different sized steel balls gives you more or less expansion

With 38 grains of 10+ year old 777 I get 1180 fps (6 shot average) from a 3rd Gen Colt 1860 with .454 143gr RB. And with 220 gr conical (I only had 2 with me in my box of roundballs at the time while having access to a cool guys chronograph at the Wateree range) but they were both 1100 + fps on his LabRadar with the same 38 gr charge. There is room for more if I don't use wads I can get 43 grains in but I think the velocity probably wouldn't change drastically. 38 gr is my standard self defense load and the Colt is my EDC. You rarely see anyone on this platform using 777 so it's good to know what it'll do.

@mypetvelociraptor LabRadar chronographs are more expensive, ($450.00+ ) but I will eventually buy a cheaper one or a used one possibly. It's nice to have access to one, but I'm in the process of looking for a house in NC with some property so until I can get somewhere I can shoot unrestricted I just don't need one. I rarely go to the range because it's an hour trip one way. I would like to see more people on KZbin using 777 because that's really where the power is. I'm always a little disappointed to see everyone using Goex or equivalent when velocity testing and then they act disappointed with getting low numbers out of their blackpowder pistols. The full size Colts and Remingtons are capable of very impressive power but not with 3FG real blackpowder. 4FG was what was used in the late 1800s and that was apparently very powerful stuff (Hazards Fine Revolver Powder). When I do finally get a chronograph, I'll be sure to post a video or something to demonstrate what they're really capable of.

Have you checked if the inner cylinder and the rim are of the same diameter (the lead ring isn't a good indicator)? Machine burrs could make rim just a tiny bit smaller than the actual cylinder so the lead ball that gets pushed inside may be smaller than cylinder causing gaps where pressure could leak causing loss of velocity and potential chain fire.

I'd check out Midway online. I buy from them all the time, including the last three cap and ball revolvers I purchased. Midway typically sells them new in the box for less than the price used beaters of the same model typically go for on Gunbroker. If you catch one of Midway's frequent sales, it's amazing what you can get BP pistols from them for. They also typically have a wide variety of models in stock. Natchez Shooter's Supply also has lower-than-expected prices on BP guns but they typically don't have near as broad an inventory as Midway. If you're really serious about using a BP gun for self or home defense then you should look at the AGC line of double-barrel shotgun pistols. The Diablo is their most popular model and is probably the most concealable double-barrel 12 gauge shotgun made. It has a 6 inch barrel. I own their Desperado 12 gauge with 11 inch barrels. The Desperado is also available with 8 inch barrels and I believe that's probably the best of the lot. The Desperado is also available in 20 gauge. They're modern firearms that use a 209 shotshell primer and with a heavy loading they can probably kill anything that walks the earth. I loaded mine with 11 .31 caliber balls on top of about 80 grains of 777. Upon shooting it I realized that if I used that loading for home defense I would probably kill half the people in my apartment building along with the intruder so now I keep a lighter loading of #4 buck in it. It's the first thing I grab anytime I have to go check out a mysterious noise in the home at zero-dark-thirty hours.

Try using the oooold LEE .451 cal. 183-190 grain roundnose backed by about 36-37 grains of FFFg. The loss of 50-75 FPS muzzle velocity means nothing at 100 yards. The conical gives MUCH higher impact and accuracy beyond 35 yards. Conical MUST be PURE lead, or they are nearly impossible to seat. I use Pyrodex P and real tallow for lube. .44 Special factory duplication load. Today, almost ALL lead has tin or antimony in it that hardens it and makes cast bullets lighter than spec. I sort my cast bullets by weight for accuracy.

30 grains is actually pretty light for 44 Cal. You can put 40 grains under a round ball and get a lot more velocity. Pyrodex, even more. Great review though. Thanks! Easy to see why this was the standard for the time period and why the 45 Colt was designed to reproduce it.

@@charlesphillips5906 Sorry bud just saw this. So yes and no, very dependent. A gas pistol will be very smooth but usually have a lil more resistance through the stroke. A springer will be easier to cock depending on power output but a lil more gritty feeling and sounding. Weihrauch has some of the best and most accurate springers u can get ur hands on. @MrStickthrower200123 күн бұрын
@dirkjensen969 horses carry cavalry, and a cavalry trooper without a horse, well, isn't. The Colt 1860 Army was specifically upscaled from the Colt Navy in .36 specifically to be able to kill horses.
@patrickscalia50882 күн бұрын
That's the Walker Colt that had that official requirement. The army's official specs were for a revolver powerful enough to kill a man "or a horse" at 100 yards. If any pistol can do that, it's the Walker behemoth. But don't try to carry it in a belt holster. Unless you're wearing extra-strong suspenders. Josey Wales could no more have comfortably carried two of them than he could carry a Springfield rifle on his belt. Since the Walkers were never intended for belt carry, but instead for carrying in a pommel holster on the saddle, it wasn't really a problem. The later Dragoon and then 1860 Army were both attempts to get a powerful pistol comfortably into a belt holster that wouldn't drag the wearer's pants down to his ankles every time he walked.

No lol, maybe if it’s from a muzzleloading rifle with a heavy charge of powder but from a revolver they don’t even compare to a 9mm. A 147 grain 9mm hollow point is 7 grains heavier than these round balls and easily expands to .50 or .60 cal, not to meant it’s going a couple hundred feet per second faster. People survive those all the time and practically never lose any limbs after.
@FoulPet2 күн бұрын
@@LandCrow delusions are fun. What expanded 9mm can make it through 2 blocks and a jug of water?
@patrickscalia50882 күн бұрын
This may or may not be true. Shot placement is everything. A slow lead ball in the right place will drop a man, whereas a massive slug hitting in a nonlethal area (say a finger) at high velocity may not even slow the person down. Wyatt Earp was fond of telling people that it's not fancy bullets or guns or fast shooting that win gunfights, it's marksmanship. I'll say it again, because it's of paramount importance: shot placement is EVERYTHING if you're shooting to save your own life. The type of bullet, its mass or velocity are all secondary factors. Practice, practice, practice! As BP firearms are typically much cheaper to shoot than cartridge firearms you really don't have any excuse whatsoever not to be at least a halfway-decent shot with the pistol of your choice.
@FoulPet2 күн бұрын
@patrickscalia5088 placement with a 25 acp is a very narrow margin
@LandCrow2 күн бұрын
Not many people are 2 gel blocks and a water jug wide. Did you miss the part where I said 50-60 cal? The round ball is like 45 at best? You can get plenty of 9mm that will penetrate a whole gel block with expansion. If you need more penetration than that get some hard cast solid 9mm but at that point you might as well move up to a more powerful caliber that will put both to shame since the only real purpose for those would be bear or moose defense.
@truenomads1508Ай бұрын
Next you gotta carefully saw a cross about 40% of the way thru a ball and test it. Do another with a hole drilled to the center. Do another doubleshotted (2 balls, same charge). Can also drill an 1/8" hole thru and tap a steel cone in to fit (essentially a lead saboted steel slug) and do a material penetration test. Theres a TON of little stuff you can do to alter the outcome.
