This video was shot with the first original GoPro camera available to consumers. I kind of like the retro look/feel. Boy have those cameras come a long way since then!
I decided to put the rod down and just record. It was fun to watch the different skill levels, but in the end, everyone had a blast regardless.

The video was shot with an old model GoPro with a resolution of 1920X1080. I mounted the GoPro to a selfie stick and just walked around poking it in people's faces ;)

Hahaha. That guy with the LA hat.... His technique was a little off but he was having some fun and catching fish..... Ultimately that's what it all about. How many did you land on this trip? No footage?

Jose Sanchez I don't think ANYONE on the boat was having as much fun as "LA" was. Good times! I didn't fish until the last 10 minutes of this trip - just decided to get some footage of other folks pulling on fish instead. It was fun :)

Thanks for the advice! I think I'm gonna go with a calstar 9' and go to turners and get a feel for the reels you mentioned. It's between the diawa saltist, penn fathem or shimano torium...

Good video a lot of fish hit the deck... did u catch any your self or did u just record??? Cuz If I was on that boat no way am I going to stop fishing to record someone else catch a fish

+Vince Rangel Actually, I didn't fish, I just recorded. For many folks on this trip, it was their first Yellowtail bite (I bet you can tell which one's too), so I thought it would be cool to capture it for them to watch later.

Thanks Andrew! I appreciate the advice. I'll try to see if I can get my hands on a calstar rod and try throwing. Gonna look into the diawa reel also. See you on the water

Heh, wide open yellowtail on a half day boat definitely separates the men from the boys. See a lot of people up on the upper deck relaxing, and I can understand that too, a nice day on the water is always great too! Did that guy with the spinner ever get bit, or should I say, did he ever bring in a fish?

Actually, I don't know if he landed his fish.. I got distracted and ended up just recording whoever was closest. It was fun :)

Good work, people watching is fun especially on the San Diego boats because you get a lot of military Riders from back east you've never seen fish that Southern Cal offers and the techniques they use back east and bring it out here is fun to watch except the guy in the LA hat I think he's a ringer

When recording I always ask permission. I try to stay out of the way, but you'd be surprised how many people react negatively to being recorded. LA hat was proof of how good El Nino fishing was that year ;)

Cool vid! Seaforth landing is awesome! I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. I want to get a setup for casting surface irons. I've been reading up on it but I can't pull the trigger on a rod and reel I've never handled before. Calstar? Seeker? 9'? 10'? Shimano torium? Newell? What would you recommend with a budget of around 500 bucks or less. Thanks for the help!
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 9 жыл бұрын
Blueyeska951 I wouldn't start off with a 10' rod, work your way up to it. There is a definite learning curve. I'm currently swinging a Calstar GG 90J with a Daiwa Saltist STT40BGH reel. The combo was under $500.00 A Torium 20 would get it done too, at around the same price point. Newell - great reel, no doubt, and some guys swear by them. I'll pass. But that's just me (back off troll's). If you can, borrow and swing a few rods before you commit. You have to find what works for YOU, not what works for the other guy. Rods load differently, so you have to find the one you're comfortable with. As you know, on an open party boat, there is a premium on space, and lots of flesh to sink your treble's into.

Ya like Andrew said don't start off with a 10' it's more work and harder to learn on. Start with a 8' or 8'6" it's easier to cast and learn to chuck irons with then step up as u get better if u want. I currently throw on a seeker pinhead sd8 8' with either a penn 500(newell bushings, drag and gears) or penn squall 30. Both loaded with 50lb spectra topshots of 100+ yards of 40lb pline cxx. My mext rod will either be a Calstar 90j west coast or phenix psw 869xhj/909xhj I work boats at it's definitely tight on bows when irons are being thrown. Having an 8' until u get really good throwing will help not hook someone else.

There's so many good reels out there for around $200 that u can use. Ultimately it's wat feels good to you. I wud say use more of a conventional over lexa reel even tho that's a bad ass reel it'll work no doubt but picks up less line and if u do manage to hook something really big it might spool you. Look at daiwa saltist bg 35th or 40h, penn fathom 25n or 30, shimano torium 20hg. I ordered torium for my new jigstick lol it's the same as the Trinidad except for minor differences in left side plate.

MrJesus100 I agree with your choice of the Daiwa BG 40H - I've been using it for a year now, and the only complaint I have with it is the HARD plastic handle. I wish it could be swapped out for the foam handle of the Daiwa LD series, love those handles!!

That is a Daiwa Sealine Model SL-X20SHA 6.1.1. at 7:02 in the video you can sorta see it on the front plate of the reel. I had to watch the raw footage from the GoPro to double check and be sure.

For many of these guys (customers) getting the fish on the boat is more important than a face-gaffed fish. The fisherman can always request the fish get gaffed in the head.
