How would I find the oxidation half and reduction half when the final outside charge don't change?

Love your videos! I have been watching every physics and gen chem video for the mcat, For the second example, we did not have to balance out anything with the transition metal Mn, but why not if its charge is Mn7+ and Mn2+ ? Is it because Mn can exist as Mn 2+? Also, when we add the 5 electrons, why is it not 7 electrons? Is it because we added the -2 + our +7 to get +5 and then needed to add 5e' ? Thank you :)
@ChadsPrep

First, the Mn atoms were balanced to begin with...1 on each side. Second, you can determine the number of electrons in a couple of ways. You can use electrons to balance out the total charge on both sides of the half reaction which is the method I used. All the reactants had a total charge of +7 and all the products had a total charge of +2. By adding 5 electrons to the reactants side now both sides would have the same charge...+2. Hope this helps and best in your studies!

Why was the original electrical charge excluded from the original equation when it was brought down to the half reaction?

Hey Chad, how do you know if its an acidic or basic question ?
@ChadsPrep
@ChadsPrep 3 жыл бұрын
The question may plainly state to balance "in acid" or "in base" or if you see H+ written as part of the reaction then balance in acid, or if OH- is part of the reaction then balance in base. There are also reactions that don't have H+ or OH- in them at all after balancing in which case it wouldn't make a difference and you'd get the same result either way. For these they don't have to indicate the conditions but for all others they need to. Hope this helps!

theres a mistake at 6:46 that was killing me. the number of H+ ions is NOT 2, it's 4. dont fall into that trap guys. always check how many hydrogens you have on the other side
@ChadsPrep
@ChadsPrep 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Shahad! Look back at it again. Before we added the H+ ions to balance there was 1 mole of H2O2 on the reactants' side (2 H atoms total) and 2 moles of H2O on the products' side (4 H atoms total) which is why we needed to add just 2H+ on the reactants side to balance them out. Hope this helps and Happy Studying!
