WOW! This guy just made this so simple. It made the other subnetting I am learning come together too. If you need to find the first and last possible IPs in a subnet, get the last by subtracting 1 from the broadcast. To get the first, subtract the "multiplier" from the "funny" octet in the broadcast and add 0's to any remaining octets except the last one, which is a 1. Well, all that makes perfect sense to me anyway. I love this guy.

"finding the subnet broadcast address with a difficult mask" - start at 04:30 to save some time
@michaelcedeno3915 жыл бұрын
Isn't the "172" example really 255.255.0.0 b/c "172" is a class B IP address? In your 172.16.20.20 example, you gave a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, which is a class C 192 IP address.
@simba16855 жыл бұрын
Michael Cedeno 172.16.20.20/24 works fine, there is no such rule that says 172 can not have more than a 255.255.0.0 mask.
@michaeldizon16414 жыл бұрын
It should be 172.16.255.255 and not 172.16.20.255

Definitely right ..the second example is mistaken..the default subnet mask for a class B IP address is 255.255.0.0..And the correct broadcast address will be 172.16.255.255

@puya134210 ай бұрын
Thanks, but I see an exception which is not covered in your training, when the broadcast section value is already greater than IP section value. I still think the method in which one can OR binary form of inverted netmask (Wildcard) and IP, is the easier one to understand.
@youssefelsafty40543 жыл бұрын
the example in 2.41 is wrong because the ipv4 172.16.20.20 his subnet is 225.225.0.0 not 225.225.225.0

The train stop analogy can be a bit more comprehensive: say if you change 33 to 40 in the 192.168.2.33 example, then you won't miss your train stop, you would hit your train stop, but you still want to go to your next train stop, then get off. This is to hit 40, then go to 48, then do 48-1.
@craigricker37204 жыл бұрын
This does not work for the IP address 8.7.252.10/22 ??? It would suggest the broadcast IP is 8.7.251.255, but all the online calculators show 8.7.255.255..... what gives?

I have a question asking for the broadcast address of a the network 172.18.118.64 255.255.255.224. According to your rule, the broadcast address should be 172.18.118.63, but I'm being told the broadcast address is 172.18.118.95. 256-224=32 32 goes into 64 twice (32+32=64) 64-1=63 172.18.118.63 What am I doing wrong?
@legionsman74766 жыл бұрын
I think I just figured it out: it's not greater than or equal to, it's greater than the funny octet. So, 32+32+32=96. 96-1=95. Does that sound correct?
