You know a car is old when the rocker arms individually look like tiny beam steam engines from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

Absolutely awesome vid! Seeing this out on the track was one of the things that made it such a fantastic weekend. I would have thought most people would have just putted around at a safe speed in a car like that but you where giving it a real hot go! Very brave for a car over a hundred years old with no seatbelts, no roll cage and a massively high centre of gravity! I was thinking - 'that guy is the bravest of the weekend' - then I find out the drivers name was 'Anne' - Two thumbs up! :)
@onepunchnz13 жыл бұрын
Fantastic. I watched this car in action at Teretonga NZ a couple of years ago, and also at a vintage rally in Invercargill. It accelerated out of Queens Park, tail wagging, and making a noise designed to frighten small children and old ladies. Anne drives the pants off this thing. Many thanks for bringing it south.

How long do the rocker arms on that thing last? Can't be very long if you don't stop and oil them frequently. And I imagine and replacements have to be made custom, I doubt you can just drop by your local auto parts shop and buy a set off the shelf. :D I like how that jerk in the red Caterham decided to cut to the inside line and basically force you in a 108 year old car off the track... Or at least that's what it looked like to me.
@slowpokebr54910 жыл бұрын
Uhmmmmm no, you see her swing that corner wide every time through. That old girl goes fast.
@therealmaxspeedster9 жыл бұрын
John Heartless If you hadn't of mentioned that I was going to...F'n "Speed Racer", trying to "outbrake" a car that basically has no brakes that he could have easily passed anywhere else on the track. Idiots like that should be penalized.
@johnheartless78459 жыл бұрын
slowpokebr549 You don't see that ancient Alfa indy/formula 1 car from the 1950's, or the what appears to be a Porsche 908/2 from the 1960's (those 2 pass around 3:55 in spectacular fashion without being jerks), or the people in the Buggatti's type 35/37's (just after the same corner the Darracq went off at 6:00) doing anything asshole-ish do you? There's a lot of cars in this video that are clearly very valuable (multi millions each) including this Darracq, it's a blessing that wealthy folks bring them out of retirement from collections and museums, and put them on a track for our amusement. It'd be a shame if some asshole in a car that isn't worth much more than a used late model Honda ran a very rare race car off the track and wrecked it just because he wants to be first in a race, that isn't even a race. The dude in that Caterham is taking things too seriously. Passing people on the inside of a hard corner when the other car clearly can't take the corner at speed is not cool. I watched the whole video a few times... You're right, the Darracq in this video has a hard time in that corner, but the only time it actually went off (that I saw) was when that Seven/Caterham cut it off when it was clearly going for that line. So, I still have to stick with the conclusion that the dude in the red 7/Caterham is a jerk.
@johnheartless78459 жыл бұрын
Max Speedster Agreed, the car this video was shot from is probably the slowest car on the track... Passing on the inside line therefore is just rude. Pass it on a straight or go around it if you're that much faster. There's no reason to try to "compete" with a car that is not in competition with your own.

So.... are those the pistons or mixture pushers that are wobbling around on the top of the engine? I mean the things looking like weight balances...
@AIRDRAC8 жыл бұрын
No, those are the rockers at the end of the push-rods that open and close the valves :) You can see an example of how it works here: images.slideplayer.com/15/4615988/slides/slide_8.jpg :)

It Would be good to have had no other cars on the track so the whole circuit could have been used with no distractions . Those early cars have to be driven with so much anticipation and juggling that to be all-out in company with others is virtually impossible, given the complexities of controlling them on the handbrake and gears.

Seems that valve train would be a blur. Does digital recording cause that weird appearance? Also, what manner of transmission does it have? A progressive shifter like a motorcycle, and maybe even a 2 speed rear? Or a friction-wheel drive?
