Awe-inspiring images of women athletes rope climbing demand attention in this Pathe newsreel, celebrating the sporting achievements of competitors from across the world at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The film engagingly captures a range of sports, illustrating the mass scale of the event as well as the more personal achievements of individual athletes, such as Swedish javelin competitor Eric Lemming. The gymnasts at the start of this film were among 48 women competing at the Stockholm games, up from 22 in 1900.

I laughed at the race because everyone started in random positions. Though the pole vault was hardcore since they only landed on sand!

They started in random positions because it’s long distance short distance is in lanes long distance doesn’t matter where u start cuz u can switch lanes

Interesting. The rope for men seems to be the basis for all bar-apparatuses. Looks like these moves are coming from daily life on ships (Navy).

Watching these videos I always think - wow, these guys had no idea what Olympics is going to evolve into. Look at the tiny stadium. Most of the people in this video didn't even live long enough to see advanced gymnastics starting in 1970's.

So gymnastics was really more of a choreographed workout routine back in the day. Looks like they moved old gymnastics into the pool to become synchronized swimming lol. Also, I'm surprised speed walking is as old as it is and it looked as ridiculous then as it does now lol.

Re. the beginning...So is this what "team gymnastics" was a century ago- mass demonstrations of relatively easy moves? I'm not sure I follow... Why is this hard?

This was gymnastics as it was originally intended. Military exercises to build body strength and improve coordination. Done using pure body strength. No springs or mats. just your body, grass, some ropes and old school vaulting horses. Wild huh?

c140075 yup, I get that part. What I'm wondering is if what we see at the beginning was being judged and scored for meddles? Again, the moves seem pretty basic compared to what is involved with "team competition" in the modern era...

It is difficult because they are choreographing a large group of people to do these routines. In many ways tho this is actually cool because its outdoors and having large groups can give you more flexibility in what you want to do. Modern gymnastics is amazing but its usually like the same ten moves on any apparatus.

Today's athletes are waaaay more advanced, agile fit and stronger. Due to modern supplements training regiments and personal trainers who are experts in their field.

Yeah, women's gymnastics wasn't even an official discipline in the Olympics until 1936.
