I came back to this after watch Netflix’s adaptation of all silent of the western front. I really, really enjoyed it. It’s absolutely terrifying what those men had to go through. I don’t know how they did it. Or had families after the war and held a stable job.

Many didn’t get a stable job (especially in the uk) which is ironic as the politicians said they would make the country fit for hero’s before many hero’s became homeless

Many got back badly injuried, mutilated, disfigured... In France we called these survivors "les gueules cassées" (broken faces) add the traumas from this war and you'll get a glimpse of how hard it was for them to get back to the civil lives. But they succeeded...

It's interesting to see the reaction of the men in Britain as they returned home, as the official story have often been that they were 'rewarded' with universal suffrage, good jobs etc. But in reality there were several riots consisting of former soldiers who just couldn't stand the inequalities of life back home anymore.

This is gripping. One can only imagine what was seen and experienced in that war. This track does capture a window in time. I hear TotalSelfHatred in this track. The world is ready for a very graphic movie of WW I.

Definitely read some memoirs of soldiers that endured this horrific conflict. Ernst Jünger’s Storm of Steel is excellent. He really visualizes the ordeal he went through. It’s different from some other writers that went through this. A lot of the other famous books were from people that didn’t spend all that long at the front, or at all. He served from 1914-1918.

The intro reminds me of this quote by Ken Moore (1924 - 2014; US Army Medic, 2nd Battalion of 101st Airborne Division) in reference to his and Bob Wright's service during the raid of Angoville-au-Plain during D-Day on June 6th, 1944: "They were young men much like us, except they were wearing a different uniform." (Eagles of Mercy, 2013) Its honestly traumatizing to think about.......... 😞

My Great Grandfather was in this war, on the German side... He told me great grandson sky above was yellow, smelt like burnt flesh from flamethrowers and garlic/horseradish from the mustard gas he said the trees we're completely burnt it looked like a nuclear holocaust.... He said i wish this on no generation by Gods have mercy on them if they have too witness the horrors i did from that war....

I would venture to say that most devilish noises occur when men force the hand of mortality on one another. And on such occasion there is not just one sound but many, it is a quiet orchestra of death. It is also possible the man that wrote that saying might have had broken ears.
