These All Quiet on the Western front quotes hit me hard. I read that book a few years back and it literally changed my view on war forever. They really did just send kids into a muddy field to dig their own graves and kill eachother inside of them, take away all the complicated politics and that’s all it was. Just kids killing eachother in the mud.

Right. No glory to be found here, just pain, mud, dirt, suffering, destruction and useless loss of life and manpower. People younger than me knowing that they'll be forced to run into machine gun firing, people younger than me who have not had the chance to feel the warmth of a woman yet about to get stabbed to death with a bayonet, people younger than me knowing that whatever they do is worthless since they could do this for years and the result would be 100m forth, 100m back, 100m forth, 100m back. I understand why my grandfather (had to fight the german being merely 16 years old) didn't want to share much information about the war and totally supported me when i said that i want nothing to do with the army.

In case you haven't found them already, Kanonenfieber are another excellent blackened death metal band, more in the mold of 1914 than Minenwerfer (some metalcore-esque moments as well, oddly enough). Songs are also WW1-based, though primarily in German (they also have a song in English, specifically in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine).
