In this intense and gripping scene from the war epic 1917, directed by Sam Mendes, Lance Corporal Schofield (portrayed by the talented George MacKay, known for his role in Captain Fantastic) finds himself in a life-or-death situation as he comes face to face with German soldiers. In a desperate bid for survival, George MacKay's character, Schofield, engages in a brutal hand-to-hand combat with one of the enemy soldiers, ultimately resorting to strangling him to death in a visceral display of the harsh realities of war.

With the threat of capture or death looming over him, Schofield makes a daring escape by jumping into a nearby river, showcasing George MacKay's physical prowess and the character's unwavering determination to complete his mission. The scene is a testament to the film's raw and unflinching portrayal of the horrors of war, as well as George MacKay's ability to convey the emotional and physical toll of combat on the human psyche. 1917, featuring George MacKay's powerful performance, will be available for streaming on Netflix starting June 1, 2024, allowing viewers to experience this harrowing and immersive journey through the trenches of World War I.

What’s the 1917 movie about?
On April 6, 1917, the Germans pretended to abandon their trenches, but in reality, they wanted to surprise the British by waiting for them on the Hindenburg Line. The British are completely oblivious to this, except for General Erinmore (Colin Firth from The King’s Speech and Mamma Mia!). He wants to warn Colonel McKenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange). The offensive must not be launched, or 1,600 men will die. The two soldiers Will Schofield (George MacKay from Captain Fantastic) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman from Game of Thrones) are appointed to go and deliver the news. Their journey was not a pleasant one, as they had to cross a no-man's land full of corpses and rats. On the way, Blake is mortally wounded by a German pilot. Schofield had to continue his mission and go to Ecoust to warn the Devon Division. He was escorted by Captain Smith (Mark Strong) but had to finish his journey alone. Passing through the bombs, he alerts McKenzie before it is too late. The Colonel recalls his troops. In the infirmary, Schofield finds Joseph Blake (Richard Madden) to inform him of the death of his brother.

I love how in this movie the soldiers actually look young like they are supposed to. For example this German soldier looks like 18-21 year old while some movies would have made 30 year old to play the role. It adds that cruel realism.

I suppose it's marginally crueller to have to kill a soldier in his late teens than in his 30s, but it's a pointless distinction in terms of realism; German soldiers at the time were up to 45, and there's no reason that this soldier had to be 18-21, or couldn't be 30, or would be considered unrealistic casting if he was. it wasn't an army of uniformly and tragically young soldiers even by 1917.

Idk why but the scene where schofield is running 1:14 from the Germans just hits me because this would've been someone's grandfather/great grandfather in real life. The worst part of this is that Baumer is a boy; he is someone's young son who was forced to fight because he is another body for the cause. Schofield knows that better than anyone - it's why he gives him a chance to live. But he knows he can't be caught (which he is but by killing Baumer, he's lessening that chance). And the only other option is to kill the boy. Keep in mind, Schofield is early twenties and Baumer is still a teenager; it couldn't have been easy for him to kill someone he would view as a child, despite only being a handful of years apart - especially with all the things he's seen. But that was war back then, still is today.
@user-ii4fi5mc9k
@user-ii4fi5mc9k Жыл бұрын
Baumer is not dead. He passed out but nobody dies after a 30 seconds choking. He probably woke up after a couple of minutes. Search about this. A human body carries enough oxygen to survive without breathing for 4-6 minutes. When someone closes the air, we pass out but we're alive. If he wanted to kill Baumer he should have broken his neck or hold him for at least 4 minutes.

Late answer but idc. It is actually, the whole movie was not only made taking account the experiences of Mende's grandfather, but the director also took some inspiration on the All quiet on the western front novel. Firstly is the cameo of Paul Bäumer and Müller and secondly is most clear theme that references the book: the Cherry blossoms. These were a main subject of Deterings character(He's in Bäumer's group) in the book, he is a farmer and mentions how there are cherry blossoms on his land- There is a also the heartbreaking scene where he latches onto a cherry bloosom branch as he tries and fails to desert.

The sad thing is that the German chasing Scholfield didn’t do it because he wanted to. He did it because he HAD to. When you think about it Britain and Germany were not true enemies in the war. Soldiers on both sides actually never had nothing against each other. They were only fighting each other because they didn’t have a choice. Yes they could had backed out but unfortunately the penalty for doing so was execution because they were seen as traitors by the generals and high command for doing so. Both sides didn’t take it personally shooting and killing each other and they only did so out of obideince not loyalty. That was why both sides mingled during the infamous Christmas truce of 1914 showing that both sides had a conscience but sadly from 1915 fraternity with the enemy was made forbidden. People will probably argue my opinion and say yes but they still AGREED to fight for their country but what people forget is that all countries had conscription with Britain joining in 1916. This means all men who were old enough and fit enough had to fight. They couldn’t simply chicken out.

Here's one thing the movie didn't do, in World War 1. Many times opposing sides would be friendly or warn each other about impending attacks or bombardments. Surprised this movie never protrayed that. Once a German Soldier threw a brick warning British soldiers about an artillery attack. There was also the Christmas of 1914 where two sides met, exchanged gifts and drinks. World War 1 was a very unique war. This film did a great job portraying it, with the exception of that bit there.

you named two examples of the how many times you think bombardments happened at how many different places in the line over how many years? The corgial way of war was a rarity even in world war 1. Anyways blake died because he showed mercy to a german pilot and Scho was even going to let a german go if he stayed quiet. So the movie did in fact show mercy
@mikeg2491
@mikeg2491 Жыл бұрын
@@sangbum60090 beat me to it, the brutality over a few years caused what was a friendly rivalry to evolve into real hatred for each other among a lot of soldiers. Also alot of the soldiers who participated in the truces were probably killed by then. The military censored those early stories as well so a lot never even knew about it.
