"There's only one way this war ends, last man standing."
1917 is one of my favourite film of 2019 and has to potential to become one of the greatest war movies. Roger Deakins beautiful cinematography along the unique directing of Sam Mendes made this movie one of the greatest experience I ever had in theather. I highly recommand to anyone who hasn't seen it.

@nicos1054

@@p_luca181 tbh I fucking hate people who just storm into comment chains and be like (in french accent) "those who enjoyed this movie are fucking dumbass simpletons and I am therefore a genius because I am on r/iamverysmart.", so I'll try and keep this comment as respectful as possible. A lot of people said they felt tension throughout the whole film but tbh I just saw them walking. Nothing less, nothing more. Just walking. Which was the majority of the film, so i was honestly pretty bored. And the other thing: the cinematography. I'd like to start off by saying that in my opinion Roger Deakins more than deserved the Oscar for this but beyond that wasn't anything revolutionary (in my opinion). Think about it: one-shot films have been done before (e.g. Birdman, which I'm not gonna lie, I actually have only seen clips of but really want to get around to watching, and I think from what I've seen it used far more effectively in Birdman, but then again can I judge if I've only seen clips? I dont know. You decide, that is if you've seen it.). In conclusion I kinda just thought it was a shortened script that made up for time by stuffing its audience with awe striking visuals that didnt really work on me, but that's just my opinion. Please let me know if i missed something or some other reason I've not mentioned that made it so enjoyable, but otherwise I'm not sure. I love a good debate. Also I'd like to say I am in fact not a professional historian, I am in fact 13. I can already envision all the hate comments coming in: "Pshhhh you're just a stupid whiny little douchebag teenager." While maybe I am (but that's a different story), let me clarify: I do Rotten Tomatoes reviews (take your RT hate somewhere else, its gotten old) and have currently reviewed over 300 films, and those are just the ones I reviewed. Would I call myself a professional? Not in a million years. Would I say I know a bit about movies? Yeah, I think so. Point: I am not a stupid whiny little douchebag teenager. Again, I'd love to hear some alternate opinions if you're still reading.

Have you seen Parasite? In my opinion it is a well deserved win. The movie does many things and does them very well. What I would say 1917 is, is a movie that does fewer things though also very well. Parasite and 1917 are battling it out for top spot for me, alongside The Lighthouse. I cannot choose really. I did say that 1917 does fewer things than Parasite so one would think I would be able to easily choose Parasite above it. But the emotional reaction that the climactic scene of the soldiers going over the top the near the end elicited in me was really quite something.
@Escapistier
@Escapistier 4 жыл бұрын
@@pseudonymousbeing987 yes I saw it in the theater as well though once was enough for me, probably not going to see it ever again lol. It was interesting in the beginning but disliked it after the whole family was hired in. The movie kinda fell apart from that on, it became boring and I just wished it to end soon... I didn't have any kind of 'affection' toward any of the characters and felt like it doesn't matter what happens in the end. So I could not see why people desire and hype it so much. It's not a bad movie but imo not very good one either.
@pseudonymousbeing987
@pseudonymousbeing987 4 жыл бұрын
@Kyle Vernon I was responding to a comment saying 1917 deserved the best picture Oscar. Since I believe Parasite deserved to win the Oscar as it did, I came in to discuss it. I didn't drag it in from nowhere, it's directly relevant to the topic at hand. So why do you have to come in with this negative, antagonising tone? Creepy for the sake of it? Is a movie beautiful for the sake of being beautiful? Yes. So what? Being creepy gives Parasite character and edge and a unique flair. Being funny deepens that. Being all the things it is, with all the levels of mastery in so many departments standing behind it is what gives it the top spot for me. I talked about exactly what you referenced. The emotional reaction 1917 elicited for me was incredibly powerful. JoJo Rabbit tier stuff. But it's utter excellence in this aspect did not surpass the excellence Parasite accomplished in many aspects for me.

This movie was magical. I was fresh off a trip to France and Belgium with my school to see the battlefields of the First World War, and seeing this soon after was... indescribable. The war has always been a point of interest to me, who is already a history manic. This after that trip, after walking through a real trench, after seeing all the names up the walls at Thiepville, hearing the ceremony at Menin Gate in Ypres, where soldiers from all over the world gave their respects to these brave men... it was powerful. The way the bands came together at the end to play highland cathedral... there are no words. Thank you Slyfer for this, for making an already magical movie that much better. Lest we forget those who went forward. Lest we forget.

@@JDP2104 tbh, I kinda preferred 1917 to saving private Ryan. 1917 just felt a lot more real and genuine than Saving Private Ryan in the sense that I really found 1917's more mellow, less pseudo-family tones among the characters more personal, making their deaths feel like you really losr something.
@JDP2104
@JDP2104 4 жыл бұрын
@@yeahuuhh441 Saving Private Ryan was much more realistic, immersive, and humanizing. Every bit of dialogue in it felt real and added to the authenticity of the soldiers. For example, when Hanks's character talked about how he really didnt care about who Ryan was, but he was carrying out his mission anyway because it would earn him the right to go home, or when he said "for every man I kill, the farther away from home I feel." Other good examples are Wade's monologue in the barn or when Ryan didn't wanna go home while the other men were forced to stay an fight. Just things like that that truly make you care for these characters and makes them feel human. From a technical standpoint, Saving Private Ryan is unmatched in everything except score. Directing, sound editing, visual effects, cinematography, choreography, and even acting all helped to create some of the most realistic battles to ever be seen on screen. And lastly, the deaths in Saving Private Ryan were all much heavier, heartbreaking, upsetting, gruesome, and better acted. I mean, just look at Private Wade or Melish's deaths. They're just so haunting and tragic to watch. If you enjoyed 1917 more, I respect your opinion but personally, I think Saving Private Ryan beats 1917 in every category except for score.

@@JDP2104 I mean, one focuses on america, the other on britain. I always thought SPR was a little bit campy (if that makes sense) just because of the excess of dialogue and the whole idea of a big family, but if that's more accurate to american soldiers, so be it. I just personally prefered how isolated 1917 was, but I do think SPR has some merit.

Well, I just saw your post about being unmotivated because it's been blocked but it's still available in my country. I know how it feels to be proud and passionate about a video and want to share it with people so I thought that this comment is more important than the movie itself. KZbin doesn't help us so much and it's unfair because this video deserves to be watched. It's brilliant, professional, emotional and proves how much you grow with each edit. I loved the beginning with the title overlay and how you combined the calmer and more intense scenes in this one, keeping a nice balance. But I think my favourite moment is at 0:32 where you cut from the two soldiers to the two planes. That's the kind of details that make an edit great. Keep creating! You can also add the Dailymotion link in the description here. People love you and they're gonna watch and love your video too. ;)

The true tragedy of 1917, is that given the time and location, the attack was in fact ordered the next day, and the next months, until winter. Whole companies would drown in mud, they would fight for a town that was shelled into power , nothing but brick dust in the mud, Passenndale would scar a nation worse than the Somme. The real tragedy, is that dispite his heroism. It was pointless. That's why McKenzie warned "Hope, is a dangerous thing "

As he's running towards the goal as the soldiers are rushing around him and artillery shells pound the ground you really must wanna yell "GO! YOU CAN DO IT! BLAKE DIED FOR THIS! YOU'RE ALMOST THERE!". It it such a good moment and a testament to how invested we get in the characters of this movie.

An incredible edit for a truly incredible film. This film had me on the edge of my seat in the theatre and left me....not happy, not miserable, but Changed and this vid instantly took me back to that profound feeling. The Addition of Wayfaring Stranger over the instrumental was a heartwrenching touch as well. Great job!

as good as everything in this movie was, the acting is underrated as hell and the way they had little to no cuts is better

I have literally no idea how in the hell I never saw your videos before Your style is what I would love to be able to do and the fact you edit such great movies that are rather ignored in the editing commiunity is so amazing to me Every second of this video is so amazing to watch I love the vibe you were able to create The fact how every scene fits so well is so satysfing to watch And the Poor Wayfaring Stranger mixed into this song holy... I am so in love Can't wait to see more videos from you (Also I really appreciate the Grand Budapest banner xD)
