Im doing a 1925 trans. The owner was driving up hill and tried to drop down into high gear to pick up speed instead of retarding the points and bang. The magneto got destroyed. Have to replace flywheel, magneto, ring gear, magnets, brass screws, bolts, and oil tube cause debris went through. The front bearing race bolt to the crank also had the head broke off. I dont believe that was caused by the damage from shifting cause all the other bolts to the crank are fine and the crank turns smooth. Also I can see where the bolt threads come out the block there are more threads stincking out than the good one so I believe it snapped from whoever rebuilt the engine by over tightening. The bolt head has marks like it bounced around for a while. But luckily I dont see any other damage to the crank. Question if you read this comment, do the 3 set of gears under the drums have to go back in the same place on the flywheel studs that they came off or doesnt matter? Thanks in advance!

Let me see if I got this right. #1 main cap - snapped bolt. I'm not sure I understand the threads part as that bolt has it's head inside and the nuts outside on the front of the engine. Did you mean "rod bolt"? It's all speculation but the jolt from shifting wrong could have bounced that broken bit up and into the swinging crank. More likely, there was too much forward/rear motion of the crank and the magnetes hit the field coil "bang". To answer your question - there are marks on the gears. Find them and line them up - watch my video on assembling the T transmission, I covered it in that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWLOmXSoorGBaLM If you do that wrong it wont turn. What pin gets what gear is irrelevent, they are all the same size and spaced equally. Lay a ruler across the "top hat rim" part of the bronze bushing - if you dont see daylight you need to re-bush them, a little loose on the pins is good, a ton is not. They seize up if they are too tight (as you saw in this one at 18:25).

@Gen3AntiqueAuto yes the bolt that locks in the front crank bearing cap. You could see the threads of those two bolts that come out of the front of the block and then has a nut on it. Yes I believe you're speculation is right on it bouncing from the lockup moment and possibly when he drove it and hit bumps. What I meant is the threads come out the block more on the one that snapped. I called Lang's and they said they just started making them. The Square head snapped inside the oil pan. I believe that was from the previous owners work. Didn't know that the gears had marks that have to line up. I will also check with the ruler or straight edge to make sure the bushings are still good. Thank you I will check out the video!
