I find the songs on KZbin and play it on my phone I do everything with an iPad I can’t control the fuzz so a lot of times the song gets compressed when it goes to KZbin and sometimes it doesn’t sound anything like what I recorded if that makes any sense.

My grandmother owned and drove a Silver Flying Cloud! Bought it in 1928. She wrote in her diary how excited she was when her uncle bought it for the family. One condition from my great grandmother. The car could not be bought unless her daughters, not just her sons, learned to drive! She got her way and they got the car!

Isn't that 1931 REO Royal B-E-U-T-I-F-A-L. I never knew that REO made such a handsome looking car in those days. In this segment that narrator says at 10:43, "That is what visibility looks like out the rear window." But what car can been seen out of that rear window right then? Could it be a maroon 1939 Plymouth Convertible, and the first in the industry to feature a powered top? I think so. That sure would be a nice selection for a future episode of What It Like, because its a true gem.

The REO ROYALE was a better automobile. It had nickel-plated wire wires. Most of the brightwork, including the radiator shell was nickel plated. My father owned a 1932 Reo Royale Victoria Opera Coupe with a straight eight engine. It was a smooth-running, quiet engine but there were issues with the side water jacket covers, which were prone to corroding out. During the time my father had it in the late 1940s - he could not get a new cover, because they were no longer available from any source... The Royale had all the amenities. Even flower bud vases. My father's REO was not common and many people didn't know what it was. The Reo Royale Victoria Opera Coupe, with dual side mount tires, had a commanding presence to it because it was a larger automobile. In regards to my father's particular vehicle, he liked it and wanted to make a hot rod out of it. But then, I came along and that crimped his plans to go hot rodding in his Reo. ( of all the cars to think about turning into a hot rod? ) Because the engine leaked coolant horribly, and he had already removed the fenders and bumpers, he was forced to junk it. C'est la vie mon cheri!

My Grandfather and his buddies from the College of Engineering at Oklahoma University in 1922 were out running the President of OU and the Dean of Engineering in a REO Speed-wagon against the Dean in a REO Speed-Coupe. The Engineers were handicapped because they had a cannon in the bed of the truck and had been running around all night and were starting to over heat. Had it not been for using a light charge (black powder and wadding, no cannon ball. This was mischief not a riot) and the quick thinking Fire Chief (Cousin Jack McKinney) who cut off the Dean and sent him into the Bar-ditch my Grandfather and his friends would have been expelled from school. They were just celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with the hourly firing of the cannon from midnight to dawn. St. Pat is the “Patron Saint of Engineers according to a rock found in Kansas. The percussion of the first salvo had rattled and broken some windows in the LAW BARN (the affectionate name given to the Law School). Also before they embarked to fire the cannon, they painted the Owls on the LAW BARN a bright shade of St Patty’s Green. (They got a fresh coat of paint every year thereafter.) Well President Brooks suspended all Engineering classes until the culprits came forward. My Grandfather called a friend, Dr. Tarman, who was President of the Board of Regents. The Classes were opened, they paid for the broken windows and that was that. But wait this group was called the LKOT (Loyal Knights of Old Trusty - the cannon). Starting as an Ornery group they became a prestigious Honorary Society of the College of Engineering and the only legal hooded society in Oklahoma by the State Legislature. They have a faculty sponsor and he knows the members. And that is how I learned about the REO Motor Car Company at my Grandfather’s knee.

But getting in and out must have been a headache...I couldn't help but notice your struggle getting in. Can you imagine if you had a drink or two? Interesting you picked up on a Packard cue - grille certainly reminiscent of the Packard cusp. The Royale was in another price class entirely and is the only CCCA REO. Olds was an interesting guy - founded Oldmar - city still exists in FL. Unlike some of the also ran pioneers who ended up in poverty because they were better inventors than businessment (Buick, Chevrolet) or those that flamed out spectacularly (Durant Olds managed to keep some of his fortune - made it to 86 still living in a mansion. Those speedos are generally referred to as drum spedometers. WYR: 1) Flying Cloud, 2) Royale, NO contest. (It's a roy-alle, as in lasalle)
