1930s Antique Screwdriver & Oldtimer Hammer - Perfect Restoration.
I restored "1930s Irwin Antique Screwdriver & Estwing Ball Peen Hammer" in the video. "Made in USA" Swedish immigrant Ernest Estwing was a self-taught engineer who started as a six-cents-an-hour machinist before eventually striking out on his own in 1923. His big idea: Hammers forged from a single piece of steel would be stronger than the traditional wood-handled models. He developed prototypes in his garage and then patented his "unbreakable" design. In 1884 Charles IRWIN owned a pharmacy in Martinsville, Ohio. A local blacksmith who was a customer of Mr. IRWIN's came up with the idea for a solid center auger bit. He sold the rights to this invention to Mr. IRWIN and a year later, after patenting the Auger bit, Charles IRWIN, along with four other business partners formed the IRWIN Auger Bit Co. About four decades later there was another blacksmith with an idea, this one in the small town of DeWitt, Nebraska. William Petersen was a Danish immigrant who invented the first locking pliers in his blacksmith shop, and began selling them from the trunk of his car to farmers and people in surrounding towns. He patented his new idea and called it Vise-Grip.It was the beginning of what would become two tool industry leaders, joining forces to create one industry giant.
In 1993 the company's histories would converge. Petersen Manufacturing, which changed its name to American Tool Companies in 1985, acquired the IRWIN Tool Company. Don't forget subscribe to my channel and like these videos please. Thank you for watching.

I reckon that was the wrong word he used on description, because when something is restored we try to change as minimal as possible on the original object that is being restored, and he used the word "Perfect Restoration". What I understood from the video title was he would restore a 1930’s Antique Screwdriver & Oldtimer Hammer but he made 2 in 1. Apart of that, it doesn't take off the merit of the job, it's a piece of art and he got a very good skills.

Great attention to detail. Someone 100 years from now will say. "I have never seen a hammer with that type of handle." They will spend hours and hours trying to discover when it was manufactured and by whom. If KZbin still around, perhaps they find this vid.

Beautiful result. I wondered about the weld, but it appears to have leveled and polished with no signs of porosity. On the strength comments: while I agree that it's theoretically weaker than the original forged hammer, the pinned connection adds a lot of strength to the join. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for light to moderate work. One of the nicer restoration videos I've seen. Your finish work is excellent.

I dont think ive ever seen a perfect pattern hammer until now! The "screwdriver" at the start was more of a chisel than a screwdriver 🤣 It turned out very well in the end, and with me being a woodworker I really like the wood you chose for the handle. The yellowish colour from the Teak will darken with time and become even nicer 😁 One thing tho...... at around the 8.20min mark, when you crosscut the wood on the table saw; this was a very dangerous way to do it. I have met 3 people in my small town who have only 9 fingers because of a table saw...... and I know MANY others with 9 fingers or less from woodworking groups that I am in; please be careful with that saw my friend. In case you are not aware, the fence on that type of saw is for ripping cuts, along the grain. Crosscuts might be ok sometimes, but not on narrow parts. There is a very high chance that the wood will "twist" as you are pushing it through, and when that happens the wood is jammed into the blade and it will at least be thrown back at you at a high rate of speed...... even worse; the wood moving in this manner can potentially drag your hand into the blade. Also, use the push stick on the part you are cutting/keeping, NOT on the waste. Using the push stick on the waste side of the blade creates an even more dangerous situation, as soon as the cut is finished its only one hand holding the wood between the fence and the blade; this is VERY unsafe and greatly increases the chance that the wood will twist and get jammed into the blade. The way you were concerned about the waste piece tells me that in the past the waste piece has been thrown back at you..... this is because of the large gap around the blade on your table saw, the wood starts to fall down the gap and then gets caught by the blade and thrown. In this situation there isnt much power behind it because it is only the waste touching the blade and being thrown.... itll frighten you more than it actually hurts. There is MUCH more power behind it when the piece being thrown at you was trapped between the blade and the fence, its like a missile and it will do you damage. You could make a wooden "cover" to go over the gap maybe, look up "zero clearance insert" and you will see what I mean. And always push the wood through the blade, do NOT bring it back past the blade to where you started. I dont mean to sound like im givin you a lecture 🤣 I jus dont want you to get hurt, a table saw is quite a dangerous machine if not used properly. Be careful, and listen to your gut...... if it tells you that something isnt right or that it could be dangerous; then find another way to do that job..... trust your gut! I could tell you were nervous with that saw by the way you handled the wood in this video, I think you were ignoring your gut. A chopsaw is perfect for this type of cut, a bandsaw will do it too...... a handsaw would even make a good job of it. Dont take my words as a harsh critique...... I am only tryin to help you stay safe brother 😁

Of course you could have restored both tools one after the other. But, to be honest, I find this combination not only very successful but also beautiful. It was an incredible effort but it was worth it. You have created an absolute jewel of solid craftsmanship that you can be proud of, mate. Clearly a thumbs-up for it.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Thanks for sharing and stay healthy. Greetings from Cuxhaven on the German North Sea shore. 😁👍🏼🇺🇲👋🏼🇩🇪👍🏼😁

Even though I'm usually opposed to destroying old tools in good condition like the screwdriver in my opinion you made a much nicer tool out of the two and I'm ok with this I restore old tools to keep them around I've done anything from old bug sprayers to post drills and many hand tools and a chainsaw and this is very cool to see you have done so excellent job making it look as if it came that way you earned a sub

Be aware of the wood cutting at the table saw, how you did it is probably the most dangerous cut at the table saw ever. Use a crosscut sled next time!

You are correct. The rip fence was used for a crosscut. This is dangerous due to kickback caused from pinching the stock. A miter gauge is to be used at a minimum for crosscuts, a crosscut sled is preferred. I prefer a radial arm saw over a table saw. (Vintage cast iron DeWalt or Delta). Only use the rip fence for ripping. There was also no riving knife or blade guard. At least a push stick was used in his right hand.
