Recently found your channel and so glad I did! I own a 1937 Packard 120C that is one of the most enjoyable Pre War cars to drive which I do often. I do all the maintenance and repairs myself , but do not have the skill for major projects. In 1937 overdrive was not available and last summer I had the engine freshened up by a local Packard Expert "Ross Miller" of Parkton MD. Ross had to modify the cross member and then he installed a 1949 transmission and the Borg Warner R11, now the car can comfortable cruise at 65 all day long, and the brakes are more than adequate. Your shop is fantastic, and your passion of Pre War is so refreshing. One day in the future with your permission I would like to visit your shop that is definitely on my "Bucket List"

My grandparents had senior Packards and one of the cars in which I learned to drive was a '53 Caribbean. The had a wonderfully solid feel that was rather unique for their times.

Love those Packards! My grampa and his brother worked for Packard. Grampa had 18 years in with the company when they went under. From what I understand his brother worked in the engineering dept., and worked with ELCO in the layout for the 3 Packard engines that went into the PT boats. And a really cool note was their mom, my great gramma was a pin-striper for Packard. She worked on many of the cars owned by Hollywood celebrities, and other wealthy people. Don't know if it's true but she told me with pride when I was a kid, that she pinstriped President Roosevelt's Packard. Sadly from breathing the paint fumes and the other chemicals in the paint shop, she developed emphysema at age 90, but made it to 94 before she passed.

As a Detroiter in my youth I loved automobiles and Packards were always special but all cars were my meat! A neighbor bought a 1937 Cord 810 for his son who went away to war and sadly never returned and I spent I don't know how many days looking through their garage window at that fabulous machine. The father only drove the car to keep the oil seals going and that sort of maintenance thing. The parents moved away and I remember the car going down the street for the last time. I'll never forget it. I realized because of the constant value going up I would never have one so I bought a wheel cover I paid $250.00 for in 1980. It hangs on my bedroom wall along with a beautiful photograph and I still dream of having the rest of that Cord in my garage. Your narratives are marvelous and very detailed. I watch every one! I enjoyed seeing the size and quality of your shop. Your restoration work is among the finest I've ever seen. I would enjoy working there myself. The knowledge and skills that you and your people contribute to the end results, is something a man can be proud of. Quality craftsmanship is highly valuable. Designed, built, and rebuilt by Americans that actually cared. I don't know if it can get any better than that. Enjoy designing, building, troubleshooting, and driving them. Best of luck to you, your people, your shop, and your customers.

This car is cool on cool. Ever since I was a little kid, I dreamed of owning something like this. Still dreaming, but getting too old to own and maintain such a beauty. If this is your car, you're living the dream as they say.

I'm pretty sure those are the Packard models our neighbors had, among other Packards, Buicks, and even a 1936 Chevy. My family was lucky enough to drive Ole Yeller, their 1932 Packard 902 Coupe with rumble seat at many local parades and car events. My kids rode in the rumble seat, the old man drove his '36 Chevy sedan, and the lady drove the 'good' '32 Packard. Back in the 60's and 70's we had no idea those cars were so expensive! I was driving and restoring beat up old Fords' and Chevys', which I still drive. Thanks for the great memories.

I find your videos fascinating, not only for the workmanship and attention to detail but for the insight we get into those times. Your comment about people throwing rocks at a passing rich man's car certainly happened in the depths of the depression. There is something good and valuable about remembering that since those were our grandfathers either driving that Packard or throwing that rock.

i love listening to the 'snick-snick' as you shift between second and third... talk about crisp and clean! i'm betting you didn't have to do a lot of transmission work during this restoration. listening to the videos of other Packards even with the synchromesh, you often hear loud clunks and grinding during the shifts. thanks for sharing, Mark! regarding your request for feedback early in the video, the only criticism anyone could possibly make is "we want more!" but i understand that actually doing the work takes precedence!

When I was young a good friend of our family would take us for a ride in her Packard 902 Coupe Roadster, we loved riding in that car. Sometimes there were six of us piled into it, with the rumble seat being the coveted spot. That car is still in the original family to this day and from what I understand is now undergoing a restoration. I would love to own one like it some day. I love your videos and have been watching them for some time now. I just subscribed too.

Hi, hear's a strange tale. Around the mid sixties on a family day trip up in to the mountains of Wales (UK) with my family. I'm about 10 years old and Dad stops the car on the side of the road for a picnic. A few yards ahead there's a narrow bridge with a small stream beneath which I explored and found a hub cap embossed "Packard Straight Eight" If memory serves me the hub cap was copper but platted with chrome or suchlike. I brought the hub back to the house shed where over the course of 50 years it not surprisingly disappeared. Anyhow what most intrigues me after all these years was what was a Packard Straight Eight doing on an obscure road in mid Wales. I'm not surprised it lost it's hub cap!

Amazing venue - being a car guy and getting married in a garage was fantastic! -They also do tours every week - if you're ever in SE Michigan. A few comments about the transmission. My fathers 902 has the bull gear and has synchro on second and third. He was unaware it was a 4 speed until he was shown how to engage it. As to its usefulness it is great for parades. On a parade in Temiscaming Quebec the Packard and a fire truck where the only two vehicles not to over heat while slowly climbing the hill up through town. Both used low gears and kept the revs relatively high to keep the fans blowing. Another transmission story while I was driving down a ruff road in 2nd and hit a substantial bump, the gear shifter dropped out of gear and fell into high, no doubt aided by my own brief relaxing my foot off of the accelerator pedal. Father and brothers are much more adroit at clutchless shifting than I but in this case it was purely accidental.

We own two rare 1931 Studebaker S model farm trucks. One is in poor condition, but runs and drives, and the other one may be beyond repair. We really wanted to restore the running one for our dad before he passed, sadly we did not get it done. Any thoughts on the cost of a complete restoration? Our whole family would really like to get this truck restored, but we don't know if we're committed enough to spend 100k for the restoration. We really don't want to just have it half assed by Joe blow's body shop either. Although this truck has been in limbo status for over twenty years, it's still in our hearts. Our family has owned this truck since 1934.

Would love to hear your opinion on the smoothness of the Packard straight 8 engine vs. the V12 in the mid thirties.
@claytoresto4 жыл бұрын
I would say as far as smoothness, they are about equal. The perfect engine for balance is a straight 6. A V12 is about the same. But Packard did such a great job on the SU8's that they are nearly the rival of the V12. The 8 is 95% as good as the V12 on performance.

Hello Mark, I've been searching for the follow up videos on the restoration of this 1932 Packard 902... when will they be created? Thanks, John
@claytoresto6 жыл бұрын
We started the restoration this month, but we will not be filming it. There is a problem with the ownership. Maybe I'll but some things up here on KZbin if I have time. We are currently filming the entire restoration of a 1937 Cord Westchester sedan. Look for the series to be out next spring. Restoration will be completed for the ACD Festival this September, then we have to film the history of the Auburn Automobile Co., and then film the excursions to other specialists in the business, then 3-4 month's of editing. Will be available on our website and Amazon. 10-15 one hour episodes. Sorry about the Packard. I will be looking to acquire a Packard for a future series.

There will also be available the series we are currently shooting on the Auburn Automobile Co. and the full restoration on a 1937 812 Westchester Cord. There will be interaction with viewers and us, and we even have a classifieds ads section. They are building the website now and I'll be back on KZbin to fill everyone in very soon.

How would I contact you about information on purchasing a 1939 Packard 110 Business Coupe. I have very little money but a real love of older cars. Is this car worth buying to restore? Does it have any value as a collector car? I love the body style, but it is very dirty all over. This is my first attempt to contact an expert, love your videos! Thanks
@claytoresto4 жыл бұрын
A Pacakrd 110 is like a Chevrolet. You will spend more on the restoration than what is it worth even if you do all the work yourself. Your best option is to save your money and then buy the best one you can find,. If your hobby is restoring your car, then go for a Packard over a Chevrolet. They are better cars.

Thank you for getting back to me, you're my very first celebrity contact ever. I do not usually write people but I really like your content. I guess I will pass on the 110 Packard as they want 23k for a really dirty car to start with. The dealer has a 1925 Packard Victoria coupe with the straight 8, but it is also a very dirty car and they want 35K for it. Can you tell me why the 25 Victoria coupe does not have a front passenger seat? It appears all original but looks really silly with no front passenger seat. It would be a lifelong dream to work in a shop like yours, and absolute dream come true. Please keep up the good work. Many thanks
