This car is highly desirable for a number of reasons, one of the primary reasons being that it has basically had a single owner in its lifetime, Baroness Gisela von Krieger (the car originally belonged to her brother, Henning, while Gisela had her own 540 K Coupe. Gisela claimed her brother's car when he was forced to return to Germany at the outbreak of WWII). Other advantages are that production of this car pre-dates the Daimler-Benz factory's use of prisoners of war/forced foreign workers/concentration camp labor and that the car was removed from Germany when WWII started when Gisela and her mother refused orders from the Third Reich to return to Germany and they instead fled to neutral Switzerland for years of hiding before relocating to America with said automobile.

@Resnorth - My choice would be another German car (German-American). The 1935 Duesenberg SSJ of Gary Cooper. The 540 had a top sped of 105mph. The SSJ Duesy could hit that in 2nd gear! Cooper's SSJ sold 2 years ago for $22.5 million - the highest price ever paid for an American car at auction!

If you had hand built a perfect replica and had it verified by Mercedes to be an exact part-for-part copy, it would be worth quite a lot of money. Although, if you had a good replica, I don't think you would ever consider selling it.

Mark M I'm not sure, but I think the company that makes those parts is not really Mercedes benz the company is called Mercedes benz classic, they closely work with Mercedes to be able to produce replica parts. the problem might be actually making one, the labor hours will be more expensive than getting the real thing restored to mint condition. it needs to be looked into. ofcourse there is no point in how much it cost if you are keeping it for you. but if the cost to make a copy is close the the real one in price. u might aswell get the real thing
