Mortske Repair

Күн бұрын

I picked up this 1937 Ford truck in trade late last fall. The previous owner never did anything with it and it came from the Iron Range up in northern MN. Story was that the guy used it for many years but judging by the Gambles 6 volt battery still attached to the cables it has been sitting since before the mid 1980s. Lets see if we can get this old girl running once again! And then maybe convert it into something a little bit more usable! If you're interested in the pickup conversion it has already been sold... Thanks for watching!
Check out our new and improved Mortske merch site!!

Kroil is great stuff! I used to work offshore Louisiana, that's about all they used for the salt environment. It works really good. But needs time to work. I snapped a 5/8 bolt off on my ol John Deere. Soaked it with Kroil, let it sit for 2 weeks & backed the bolt out with a channel lock!

Hello Mortske and Duff Dog, I had a 78 mercury monarch 302 and had to do the pokey pokey with the Oil, I put the Plug back in and put about a can and a half of Berrymans b-12 chemtool in and started it and let it run about 20 minutes and Holy Shitsky I didn't think it was ever going to stop draining, Pure mud I changed it again a couple weeks later with Berrymans and never had the problem again, drove for a few years with not much problems.

When I graduated High School in 1973 ( Dont say it!) I went to work at a local TEXICO Full Service Gas Station! As a young Jedi Knuckle Buster. The old boy running the place said " You gotta start at the bottom and work your way up! Which meant everything under the car or truck was mine LOL! It was SOP to drain a quart of old oil out and add a quart of Kerosene and let her idle for about 10 minutes before the oil and filter change. We also never changed the Spark plugs unless the porcelain was cracked. We had the old sandblaster plug cleaner or we used the oxy-Acty number 0 gas welding tip to clean them. We had a Spark plug tester made by AC DELCO and a Distributor Machine too! I never got to use the Distributor Machine but I was told how it worked. I had to be able to snatch the 7/16 flat washer from his hand to prove I was worthy! LOL!

Count yourself fortunate that it's only deer droppings. My boy Prince had a thing for raccoon poop. He hated 'coons but loved to roll in their crap. That stuff is bloody strong horrible smelling. Mades me gag a little when I bathed him. Same place of course, all up in the side of the head, neck & collar area. Once on a trip to the Columbia River, he found himself a nice little stash of rotten Salmon. We could smell him from 20 feet away. I used gfs strawberry flavored female body wash on him, in the river of course; (no dog shampoo on a camping trip!). He was not getting in the van reeking of rotten fish! After 5 days of camping in that spot, seems like he waited to do this right as we were ready to leave, too.

I am 66 and used Sun equipment a LOT in the mid 1970s in GM dealerships. A lot of the profit in them was pure showmanship, but if you had the knowledge, they could and would locate a tiny or intermittent issue. I had the benefit of GM training schools, so I had a lot of resources not available to independents.

1:02:49 I have a rare Stromberg 81 in my 1927 4 Banger. The Stromberg 81 also has the inlet at the same location as the 97. The 81 will have a similar marking as you pointed out except with an 81 inside the small circle. If there is no number 97 or 81 on it, another way to tell is to look at the other side and there will be a fraction, either 13/16 or 31/32 or 1 1/32. That is the Venturi size. The 97 will say 31/32 which is the same as .97" venturi. The 81 will say 13/16 which is .8125" venturi. That is why the model is called 97 or 81. Just to break the rule, the model 48 refers to the main jet size of .048". Go figure. Good job breathing life back into this old flathead; I was concerned with you creating all that exhaust smoke with your shop door closed. Quick work on putting out that fire.

The old Flathead V8 is still better then the Y block. Trust me Mortske, there are people still in this world who will pay money for driving something that has no comfort. The world is a strange place and people tend to love hate things you can't even imagine. Personally love to have a machine that has not been tampered by someone who did fancy paint repairs but forgot to change to oil or do breaks. Seems you scored a good one with this vehicle at least the starter was not under the seat.

Seeing as how that Ford Flat head V8 hasn't been bored out nor the valves ground and its from 1937 its worth more than the truck to get just it running. I like that throw together roller '37 Ford half ton pickup on that frame. great idea.

If you like coffee flavored licker try some Kahlúa. It's pre-mix coffee and rum so you don't have to fumble around with mixin it. I like how after all the beating on it and setting it's interior on fire the ghost in the passenger seat waits till it starts to leave...Those flatheads can be loud enough to wake the dead.

5 minute engine flush looks just like, you guessed it, ATF fluid. I know that ATF fluid works because in my younger days I worked in a shop when one came in...in exactly the same condition. Actually worse. I idled it for 5 minutes with the ATF fluid in the block then drained the pan. But not before the customer was contacted. It actually drove away. Good find there. The Ford that is.

The best sound in the world of cars is a Flat Head Ford V-8 on a Race track with straight pipes. I raced then for 15 years all over Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and yes even Arkansas. They were the Motor of the Purr.

I can't believe the look on your face as you tightened up to torque the engine over and damn near bit the carb when it turned so easy. I have a great story about my first engine, a flat head v8 and how it all ends. You just made my day taking time to make it run. I wish that more of them were that easy to get rolling over.... ford musta had a good day when he rolled this one off the line
