Amazing: 5 artists took this Larry Clinton song based on Debussy into the top 20 in 1938 alone! 3 of them, including Mildred Bailey and Bing Crosby were in the top 10. But only one took it to No. 1 - the great Bea Wain fronting the Larry Clinton Orchestra. It must have been hard to venture out in 1938 without hearing _some_ version of this enchanting song.

Recorded a couple months after the highly popular, and wonderful, Larry Clinton-Bea Wain version, this Norvo-Bailey take requires no apologies. Arranger Sauter, whose work always displays his classical leanings, achieves an especially dignified effect, with both brass and reeds -- while Red's xylophone tremolos and Mildred's uncharacteristically straight melodic reading (I guess she decided not to mess with Debussy) lend a tone of poignancy.
