I love working on antique and vintage radios, phonographs/record players, and practically anything electronic or mechanical. I can say that the oldest item I had the most pleasure to repair and restore, was a 1919

1919 Victrola Model XVI. Repair wise all it needed was a new holding pin and a good cleaning and re-lubrication of the mechanical gears.

if you want to keep the patina and original paint, soak the rusty bits in evaporust or similar, then use a non-reactive clear coat over it. I did that on an old craftsman power drill I rewired and cleaned a couple of months ago, and it worked out great.

You were brave touching that isolating switch whilst it was running. As if it had gone short to ground (unless you were insulated). That could of been one hell of a wakeup.

If you do a quick search, I think you'll be interested to find that there places where you can buy modern cloth wire, built to modern standards. It might act as a good replacement for that head wire if it actually does need to be replaced.

Woe, that's awesome! Just out of curiosity, why would the owner want to bypass the switch? What would that provide them? And then how can you tell that it's both a fire and electrocution hazard? Or should I say, what are the wires supposed to look like?
