I can't believe that filter capacitor is still good
@bbishoppcm11 жыл бұрын
That's not really what I was getting at; what I mean is, the capacitor should be left alone if anything; only discard safely if it's defective or if the appliance is being discarded.
@bbishoppcm11 жыл бұрын
A faulty capacitor won't cause that; it sounds like you may have faulty windings (a possible short), OR, a faulty switch. How's the cleanliness of the motor? Is it filled with dust and/or debris?

You've done a beautiful restoration there, well done!

does the video explain it at all? I think I got some footage of the inside of the gearbox which should show how it works...

I'm in the process of restoring a 1938 Robbins and Myers 16 in, 3 speed fan. Couple things I'd like to ask though. How did you paint the housing with the windings still in place and also if one had to change out the wiring what gauge should it be? This Vortalex came out awesome and I picked up some tips as well.

Did you powder coat the cage or spray it yourself?

I just purchased my first fan, a 10” Vortalex The blades look to be okay but the hub is crushed in causing one blade to be out of alignment to the point I don’t even dare turn it on. Do you know of any sources for a replacement fan blade hub?

We have a very similar fan. Having trouble removing the two pieces surrounding the motor. Impossible to get apart. Any tips?

What kind of car did you paint the rims black on?

I have the same exact fan. I found it in the trash 10 years ago. Just needed a new line cord. It is the best fan we ever had. Did you find out what year your fan was built. Was it 1949, 68 years ago! My 3 way switch is missing as well. Thats my next project. LOL
@bbishoppcm7 жыл бұрын
Mine is a 1941 model. I recently picked up a 1949 12" version which I use while sleeping. A similar 3-way switch is still available from most hardware stores.

in comparison to a pre-1920s model, the cost-cutting is very obvious! but yes, this is built using ZERO plastics and would even still outlast anything made today.

no, they're perfectly safe; just don't throw them out or puncture the can.

one trick I use is I buy 16 or 18 gage light duty extension cords and cut off the female end, then you have a nice cord with a new molded end for your fan

Dang that front wire looks like it close to being inside the cage.
@bbishoppcm11 жыл бұрын
Faulty windings IS terminal, and very dangerous. I suggest checking the motor's resistance between each wire. Contact me offline if you want to discuss this further; bbishoppcm@comcast.net.

Hi there your ge vortalex fan is fabulous , i have the same model on here but im in the united kingdome so my fans are really rare in the uk.I have to run mine on a 110 volts transformer. My ge vorty will out perform any modern crap made today.just like yours. Their like a tornado by comparison of the modern same sized fans of today. My vorty runs quite cool , but my little 1924 ge whiz runs quite hot, but is fully restored got it on ebay from New york i guess some models do run hot and some not so whats your opinion you seem to know a fare bit . Oh id like to ask some thing my fans are not earthed but are running through a transformer which has a built in fuse cut out does that make it safer? You seem to know a lot about electric i dont. I just like vintage fans for their appeal and design , would be good to hear from you , check mine out lol tell me what ya thinks
