Hi, Lou! 4-door convertibles were pretty exclusive, the ultimate glamour cars of the prewar period. This 1940 Buick cost $1,962 dollars new, quite a pretty penny for the era, and weighed 4,540 pounds. Besides the 250 of Model 81C, there were seven of the Streamlined 4-door convertible sport phaetons (Model 80C) also built, which cost and weighed the same. After the war, the Limited series didn't return until 1958, and only for that one year. The last four-door convertibles anybody ever built were the 1967 Lincoln Continentals. I had to wonder why you kept this episode on the back burner for a year and a half, but time to break out the champagne because it was certainly worth the wait. Many thanks to you and Dennis for letting us all in on this superb luxury ride!

It was fun to see a pre-war classic. Hope you do more of them. This Buick straight eight engine had a displacement of 320 cubic inches and with a compression ratio of 6.25 produced 141 H.P. @ 3600 r.p.m. Torque was 269 ft. lbs. @ a leisurley 2000 rpm. A three-on-the-tree was all that was required! The oil capacity was 8 quarts. Wheelbase is 133 inches on this car. A 1940 90 series limo (140" wheelbase) was featured in The Godfather doing a U-turn in the middle of the George Washington bridge. The present owner bought this car in 1961 for a paltry $35. Mr. Abagnale says he has driven the car up to 100 mph.

That is a beautiful Buick indeed. On a September 2, it was close to freezing temperature like winter when the car was taken out for a drive? It is kind of miracle the car ran so well at such a cold temperature. I myself have a copy of the oversized 1940 Buick Limited sales brochure. It is kind of hard to believe those were given out in a showroom. The brochure looks more like a coffee table reference book than a sales catalogue. The printing costs of the brochure must have been very expensive. The oversized 1941 Cadillac brochure with embossed multi-color Art Deco cover is also a work of art like the 1940 Buick Limited brochure. Thank you all for sharing!
