I’ve just discovered these little motors. Fascinating!

I had one exactly like that when I was a kid. It had no carburetor, just an air intake adjustment knob. I made myself a go kart with a board and 4 wagon wheels. Dad made me a wooden pulley for one wheel. I had a post to block it about an inch from the ground, started it up, then a" run and jump on" procedure to get going. It was geared for about 5 or 10 mph, but wouldn't go up any grade much. It must have been about 1/4 horsepower or less. I had forgotten about the kick starter. I was the king of the road, and it was the very best times of my life.

I found one of these Maytag engines. But, the crank bushings are worn out. One of the things on my bucket list is to repair/ rebuild it and get it running again.

bravo! rebuilding vintage equipment involves a strong do it yourself reflex as most parts are not readily available and itn is a prime necessity of make more deep reshearch and adaptation to fit something able to do the job and perform flawlessly.

Yep, these Maytags were made so the farmer could fix them, that’s how they sold them out in the country. Then the kids would take it off moms washing machine and put it on an old wagon, fill it with drip gas and take off. The one cylinder engines wouldn’t hardly pull the skin off a grape but a lot of mechanics got their start as a seven year old fixing them.

Awesome..... I've got an old Briggs engine that was made back in the 50's it's got a updraft carb on it I've cranked it up a few times need to put a kit in the carb hope I can get it done one day. I noticed it sounds a bit different than the now day engines for some reason but sounds good.

What's that oil about, about 30 weight, non detergent? It almost favors the degummed castor oil we use in our nitro rc engines. Now thats some thick stuff too, until you mix it with the methanol and nitromethane.

Nice engine there. It's good you did tear it down and look it over. Those pistons would have probably just split at one time or another.

You recon that oil mite be a straight 50W.?..I'd like to see a chemist's deconstruction of it's properties from a ways back... recon it would be pretty durable stuff..Yep..That's a jod for the Don Athaldo lever...Looks like they burned her up pretty good...May be no oil in the fuel.?...Loved to hear it run..good stuff.
