Hey folks!
In this Restoration Video I restored an old 'Tarantella' Razor Blade Sharpener. The marks on the tool say 'DRP' which means 'German Reichs Patent', so this tool must be at least 80 years old!
I purchased this Razor Blade Sharpener online and the condition was bad. So I restored it! I started with disassembling the whole tool, and took care of every single part. I used sandblasting, filing, sanding, painting and many other restoration techniques to get this old beauty to its former state!
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!
If you want to support my channel hit the like, leave a comment, subscribe and share my work. It helps a lot! :-)
Thanks for watching!

One helpful tip I've learned for working with cold bluing solutions, heat the metal to be blued to about 70-75°C. It makes the bluing solution get deeper into the steel and is less apt to leave streaking. It also helps the oil get deeper into the metal for curing the cold blue. It's helped me quite a few times to get parts "just right" after fighting them looking terrible after cold bluing room temperature steel.

@@misterpatina if cold bluing is toxic and it is a good idea to wear gloves while applying it, some of the toxic chemicals must persist after it is dry, no?

At that point why not just heat it another few hundred degrees and rust blue it in oil? I thought cold bluing was made so you didn’t have to worry about heating the steel to a specific temp?

Reminds me of our next door neighbour during the war. He always sharpened his razor blades with some sort of accessory. You knew when he was about to shave because you could hear the “clip clop” of his razor blade flipping over at the end of each stroke on his strop.

In the Italian town Tarantos (from Tarantas) it was believed that the 'lycosa tarantula' (a wolf spider named after the town and not to be confused with what we know as tarantulas of today) had a highly venomous bite which would cause a condition known as tarantism. The original tarantella was a graceful courtship dance whereas the tarantella associated with the spider was a frenetic and said to last hours or days with music played to match the pace of the victim

Oh that was surprising for sure. Never heard or seen anything like that, I knew Gillette blade sharpener did exist in Italy (and surely elsewhere as well) until stainless steel blades lasting 10x more than carbon steel were introduced. But this 'stropping' tool is nice and surprising! Great work as usual, really enjoy your restorations.

How funny you doing a razor blade sharpener. I hadn't seen one of these in years. My Dad use to have one of those double sided razor blade sharpners. I'm pretty old now but I can remember it from when I was 5 wondering what it was. At 7 I thought it was a cigarette roller as some people had these fancy rollers. A couple of years later I finally as what it was.

If you think of the price of blades back then, it is like those $5 cartridges on newer razors. People used to strop and resharpen the blades until they wore down and didn’t fit in the razor. Nowadays as a shaver who uses double edge and single edge safety razors, blades for them cost between $0.05 to $0.40 each. Just recycle the steel when they go dull. There is a really neat stropping machine from around the 1920s that you insert the blade and then turn a handle and inside the blade rotates against a stropping belt. I have an old Valet Autostrop razor that you would buy a stropping belt for it. It lets you strop the blade while it is still mounted in the razor.
