"spite pockets" - I love that term! The last pockets I made on a summer dress were large enough for two bottles of beer each 😅 it's just a tiny bit heavy on the shoulder straps... When is a pocket to big? When it hits against your knees when walking 😇

My Granny taught me to sew at age 7 or so on a treadle machine by making a doll and doll clothes from patterns she cut out of newspaper. The doll patterns might be a good beginner project for a child. It could even be hand sewn.

I remember with 4 of us girls at home and mama and cousin K atherine all using MY patterns we would copy the patterns by hand on butcher paper or gift wrap or newsprint and alter to each size. The only patterns that survived were the originals. Sizing down is a pain.

Friend gave me many of her patterns that she had. I love them all. Late 40's, 1950's, and very early 60's

Oh, that 1930's New York pattern, size 42. My jaw dropped so far I looked like a Tex Avery cartoon.

The children's suspender skirts reminded me of my favorite back to school dress (from 1966), which was a dress made to look like a blue skirt with a white blouse. I can't remember if it had fake suspenders, but I want to say it did.

My work has extra large paper and a sophisticated copier, just saying I was really really tempted to snap up a kids pattern and try to copy it.... But I wasn't sure what they might say! Today I asked them if I could borrow the conference room table to cut out a pattern! The male coworkers all looked at me like I had lost my mind And started laughing. They told me to have at it .. so I guess I Have a place to lay out And cut pattern pieces!😬🤔

The tissue paper is less expensive to produce. Originally it was used because most patterns were mailed. Kwik Sew was on thicker paper when they came out at first. When it was sold to the big four, it went to tissue. In theory, the tissue is supposed to be easier to "test on a body for fit, too. I have seen people do this old method. I don't recommend it. Its a good way to rip a pattern to shreds. Some of the newer tissue is thicker. I believe the Wisconsin plant is printing on the newer thicker, white tissue. This is what I think all the big four will be printed on in the future.

The all-in-one sleeve and blouse is called "en chemise." I just learned that recently in conjunction with a Closet Historian video. She didn't mention it in the video itself; I went searching for more info on the sleeve/blouse combo and found that term... somewhere. Possibly a 1942 sewing manual. Which I downloaded and read and is just SO FULL of useful information and creative design! Oh man, I love so many of these designs, especially the 1940's and 1930's. They're just so very good. 1950's styles are nice, but I don't like pencil skirts and the hugely full skirts are dangerous on me - anything that sticks out more than a couple inches from my body will inevitably get caught, knock things over, knock PEOPLE over, and generally be a public menace. Some of the blouses are nice, though. Capes! Yes! I picked up a WHOLE BUNCH of free wool fabric a couple of months ago, and once the weather cools down enough in my neck of the woods (New England,) I'll be making at least one cape, possibly more. (I've been using Joann's Ambiance Bemberg rayon to line things, but it's disappeared off the site. I'm not sure if that means it's out of stock or discontinued or something else, but since my plan is to draft the pattern and then use the lining as a mockup, I have to find a new source for lining sooner rather than later.) Yes, it'll be something along the lines of Bernadette's second-hand, red cape. With as many pockets as is feasible, and at least one hidden pocket just because I want to try such a thing and I like the idea of sneaky pockets. Pockets and sedition, my friends, pockets and sedition.

I just discovered you today and you have given me some HOURS of great fun watching my old passion of looking at patterns. These are older than the lovely catalogues I spend hours going over, but cloths are cloths no matter what time period. The biggest thing was I couldn’t reply to lots of the questions that came up (the smock on the lady was very familiar. My Mom taught junior high art class’s but had to wear nice skirts and dresses and they kept her clean.)I’ll definitely will be binging the rest of your great stuffs!❤😂🎉😊😊😊😊

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a dress pattern museum with examples going back to the 1800s and perhaps some sample garments made up on dress forms. That's a place I'd go out of my way to visit.

Stephanie if you prop the pattern up on a book stand for display it might make it easier on you and also perfect the focus (you can determine the camera distance in advance and there won't be as much shaking). You picked my two favorite decades of all time for this livestream. Also, I could be wrong but I think the pleats on the Simplicity shorts which are SO cute are called "inverted" pleats? It's been a while for me....
