My mum taught me to sew....very precisely, no short cuts, everything pinned, on grain, every marking transfered with tailors tacks or a tracingcwheel and chalk. Instructions followed meticulously. The results were chefs kiss, but oh so time consuming. I have never learnt to loosen up. And now I no longer sew ...but I did teach my daughter, and she is much freer and loves sewing.

Ha! "Pinned"? Not basted? 😄 There's your 1st shortcut. I loved sewing until I needed glasses to see what I was doing. There were no $1.00 magnifiers at T,G&Y at that time so I lost my fire. At least you taught your daughter. Mine might be able to hem a sheet. 🤫

Thank you for saying this. It was exactly what I wanted to say. I love it! Definitely I love your style of speaking and I hope I have some tips for you for your back, I’ll email you. First set your feet parallel to each other shoulder width apart. Second reach with both arms straight up stretching in a relaxed way. Third use one hand to grab the rest of the other and pull straight up with that wrist and hand. Fourth on the side of the hand that’s grabbing, lift your heel about an inch or two. Fifth, now stretching as much as you can while still being relaxed, pull up and over about 1 to 2 inches, at the most, to the side. Sixth, Take two deep extremely relaxed breaths while you are in this position. Seventh, repeat doing the same thing on the other side. What you’re doing here is opening the vertebrae on one side without compressing the other side. If you do this or two relaxed breaths for each side several times a day, it can help release all the tension of the previous work. I taught it to dentists and people who lift heavy things and a woman who trims her twelve mini horse’s hooves. They all LOVE it! I hope this helps everyone who reads this and please pass it on if you like it! The more people who know how to ease backs, the happier our whole world.

I love how this video shows the reality of sewing :D I was under the impression that the time given on simplicity patterns (at least on the modern ones) for how long it will take to sew is just the sewing time and they sneakily don't include the time it takes to lay up and cut fabric, pin, prep anything,, fitting or pressing seams..

Two tips to deal with sewing with a wreaked back. First, raise your cutting table to at least the height of the kitchen bench. This can be done with blocks of wood if you don't need to raise it much. Alternatively, pieces of plumbing pipe can be jointed together to make a plinth or just slip onto the legs of the table if possible to lengthen them The sewing machine will be more comfortable to use if you can raise the table it sits on, and, tilt the machine itself towards you. Experiment with the angle until it is right for you. Mine is around 1 1/2" . Use something that absorbs vibrations such as an old phone book or easers. My husband also built me a large surround perfectly aligned. These are great as it stops you getting crick in your neck. I can sew for hours instead of minutes since tilting my machine. Sorry for the novel, but I hope you will try these suggestions, being in pain is horrid

I use that same bias tape for finishing quilts! It's... uh.... fine. It's not the worst I've used. It's got mystery fiber in it (poly). The seams are butt-glued to each other, but have survived multiple washings on both the quilt one kid and one dog have adopted as their own. It's more important that my geriatric moron of a dog has a cozy spot to sit under my sewing table than I have perfect binding, so it's... fine.

I’m soooo distracted by the awesome fabric of the wonderful dress 👗 you’re wearing here. I’m everything all at once. I’m jealous, I’m happy for you, I’m so excited that the fabric exists. I’m (yet again) just so happy for you. I’m imagining the moment you first saw/found that amazing fabric. OMG I would have lost my mind .... ever so slightly. Thank you for sharing all of.....this with me. You rock. 🙂🐿❤️🌈 I hope that your back is feeling a little better, take care of you 🙂

Oh, yes. So, being naturally short waisted, I shortened the back by two inches, and didn't change the size of the neck line on either front or back because they were already MASSIVE. I love this pattern, however. I made a copy of it with my alterations (which include extending the back of the under dress(?) so it forms a tube and putting in a small zipper to close it) and gave it to my sister. I ADORE your fabric! WOW! I plan to make this dress again, and already have the fabric for 3 more. Thank you, Stephanie!!!!❤❤ Oh, and marking your darts from the right side of the fabric is the absolute correct thing to do if you then baste your darts closed with a ladder stitch -- I learned that from Snappy Dragon.

Thank you so much for this video! I loved it! I've been sewing since I was 8 (now 67) and I don't always follow instructions meticulously. My Mom figured that if you had pins what was the point of basting although stay-stitching was done to avoid stretched neck lines, etc. I so enjoy seeing people having fun. You go girl!

I just watched this while in the middle of sowing my first "all by myself" project. Took a course 1,5yrs ago, did things there, and some repares in the meantime, but nothing "real". Now I'm trying to remake a sweaterdress (??) that I like to wear, so I made the pattern from something sowen together... I can really see myself in you in this video - I would also sing if I was video documenting it, I am plus size, I tend to take shortcuts (but being a newbe really should not), I have no idea howvthis will turn out, I just know I will wear it if it will physicaly be possible! Lol! For starters it is my first long sleeves (and second ever sleeves) plus my first pockets, so I already used the lefover material for something else after cutting, when I discovered, that I only have two halves of a sleeve!!! In any case. I like your video, it inspires my project ;) ;) ;)

I made one similar to that except the skirt portion is straight. I find that the shoulders slip a bit, it can make the dress uncomfortable to wear. So in order to keep the shoulders from slipping, I sewed a strip of fabric in the back of the opening for the head, you could even use a piece of stretchy fabric to add in the back so your head could slip into easily.

I love the dress you are wearing. When my daughter was about 3 a friend gave me a several 50's era patterns she had used for her daughter. I for several years I used them to make my daughter the cutest old fashioned ruffled dresses in Star Wars, Pokémon and Transformers fabrics. They were so fun and unique. She has moved on to combat boots and hoodies but, I hope to make my own Dr. Who walkaway dress.

For the record, I have indeed used my teeth to hold things while sewng, pinning, braiding and many other things one likely isn't expected to use teeth for. And yes, I generally do sew in chaos, which sometimes means cutting fabric on a wrinkly carpet and sometimes means chasing the rabbit to get my scissors back.

@@Eloraurora Mine's a rather accomplished thief, I think someone let him take a level of rogue... so far his list includes hairbrush, jackknife (closed!), scissors, cordless mouse, paper, pattern pieces, my pattern weights, pens, pencils, a funnel, chalk, scissors, cutlery, he knocks over my tea mug if I leave it on the carpet, pins (he pulls them out of anything he can reach, thankfully spits them right out there, all pinned items and pincushions are now well out of his reach), paper tubes, cardboard boxes, and the only reason he hasn't stolen my phone and cordless keyboard is they're too heavy for him...
