I have been restoring Zenith 10-S-464, and am now watching for alignment info. As you say, no alignment info out there, Chassis 1005, thanks. Rick in Sharon PA

I'm glad your power-up problem was simple to diagnose! Aside from the flimsy tone control, this has been yet another well-designed and built Zenith radio.
@thattubesound22147 жыл бұрын
What amazes me about Zenith is that their radios always look like a disheveled mess underneath, yet no radios ever beat them for sheer performance. It's intriguing. Thank you for watching. I had particular fun with this series, because I was aiming for a slightly different goal than usual. I wanted to help those folks who get stuck on the mechanical stuff. I am grateful that you take the time to write comments too, Martin. Thank you! Take care, my friend. Michael

Until their decline in the late 1960s, Zenith cared deeply about function, yet as you observed, didn't care much about internal form.

Your videos are perfect and your style and format is the reason I subscribed to your channel. Plus my wife loves your cat!

Thank you very, very much! Freddie thanks your wife! He is actually the gentlest cat I've ever had. You should check out Shadow, the black cat, on Jim Lindenas' videos. I'm glad that you like how I do the vids. I really enjoy making them quite a bit. I hope you keep watching and continue to leave comments. They mean a lot to me. Take care. Michael

Hey Michael, I always find your videos informative and entertaining even if I don't leave a comment. I haven't had much to comment in this series as the only Zenith's I've ever owned or probably ever will are my ZTO's and more modern ones like the 725 series. I've never seen an older one from the 30's or 40's that they didn't want an arm and a leg for one and while I find them interesting to look at I refuse to pay that much for a radio, lol. Take care, Gary
@thattubesound22147 жыл бұрын
Gary, I'm just glad that you watch. I agree that Zenith radios are often priced at crazy-money levels. I never pay the types of prices that I sometimes hear about. I usually pick them up as cheaply as most other radios. I'm lucky. There are a lot of old radios in the Salt Lake City area, and that tends to keep prices down. Yeah, there are always the ding-dongs who put radios on the on-line classifieds for stupid money, but those radios invariably sit unsold, usually until their owners wise up. I hope all is well with you, my friend. Cheers! Michael

I like your subtitles also !! So many videos have a very light text on a light background that is almost impossible to read or the subtitles are in so few frames that you have to back up and stop the video to be able to read the text. It is obvious that after you edit your videos you watch them for content and clarity of viewing. Right on and way to go. Just a heads up on a good video job. Aloha from Maui. Maui 7-0

I have terrible vision and as a result, I need large print with bold contrast. I also need time to read it. These things have guided how I do things like subtitles and close ups. I always try to maximize contrast to make it easier to see. Thank you so much Randy, for watching and for taking the time to comment. I really thrive on the comments and suggestions of those who watch the videos. Cheers! Michael

One more thing, I also at 70 years of age have terrible vision. I very much appreciate your videos and the fact that you use a tripod for most of your shots. You zoom in from the tripod and move the item to be viewed, no more blurry out of focus shots. No more out of center held in left hand shaky video subject matter. I will be opening my KZbin channel soon and am looking at other channels to emulate in my productions. Thank you for many ideas. Aloha from Maui, Maui 7-0

Thank you again, Randy. One thing that I do struggle with is getting out of frame on a shot. I've tried putting tape on my bench, but it still happens. I keep trying and it happens less often, now. Thank you for your kind words, sir. I do appreciate your perspective. I look forward to learning that you have launched your channel, too! Cheers! Michael

I was watching the alignment procedure and I think you skipped step 6. I'm assuming the radio pointer will be set at 1400 on the scale and do the adjustment until the peak of the signal is heard. Couple weeks ago I purchased a Knight frequency RF generator and changed out all the out of tolerance resistors. Also, I purchased a Fluke frequency counter. I still have to figure out how to operate the counter with the generator while aligning the radio.
@thattubesound22146 жыл бұрын
The best way for me is to use an "A/B" switch. I use one position for setting and checking the frequency. In that position, there is no signal output to the radio. Then, the other position goes to the radio without going to the counter. I'm sure that it's not ideal, but it has worked for me for years. Let me know what you come up with. Thank you for watching. And you're probably right about me skipping a step. Probably my subconscious taking over. I hate to do alignments! Cheers! Michael

I love your subtitles! Have I ever done that on and off camera, lol. Entertaining and informative! Curious to where you hooked ur Fluke to? Thanks for sharing! I cant wait for Mr Curtis to enjoy this set. Im sure his family will enjoy this historic set for many years to come, thanks to you! Keep up the good work! Best--Larry

Thank you very much, Larry. This has been pretty dry subject matter, so I look for any way at all add some humor and interest. I am glad that you watch. I'm going to change directions on my next project. It will be something a little different. I am grateful that you watch, my friend. Cheers! Michael

Mike, When you were tuning the 18mhz slug, you mentioned you wanted to be sure you were tuning the fundamental. How do you know which was the fundamental. I really appreciate all of your series of videos. Keep up the good work.
@thattubesound22147 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Crist. I enjoy making the videos. The way that I understand it (but I would verify, and let me know if I got it wrong), the fundamental frequency will be the one with the greatest amplitude and tightest response curve (sharpest rise and fall as you tune through it). Again, I am not entirely sure, and I would need to check myself. Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate all your great comments! Cheers! Michael

Hans, I apologize for taking a while to reply. Truth is, I've been away from KZbin for some time and your comment catches me just as I am returning to the living, as far as KZbin goes. I do work for clients and I'm so far behind schedule due to events in my life, that I have not been able to make time to reply to comments for a very long time. Welcome to the channel. It is a bit outdated for the same reason as above, but I am going to try to resolve that, soon. To answer your question today, I live in Central Utah in a town called Nephi. I used to live in Salt Lake City, but when Wifey passed, I couldn't stay in our house. Nephi is a small town, which is much more to my liking than SLC. I don't kmow anyone in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area who might help you. I wish I could be of more help on that one. I hope that I've answered your questions, Hans. And welcome, my friend. I'll be working hard to get some new content uploaded as soon as possible. In the mean time, feel free to ask questions about what you see. Take care. Cheers! Michael

No apology necessary. I used to be into the antique radio hobby a couple of decades ago. I have about 8 nice sets now, that I have rebuilt, but I don't know how to accurately align the tuners. I can follow the schematics fine. I do have a rather large collection of antique radio tubes, including some RARE, hard to find, and EXPENSIVE ones, if you know anybody who is looking for them, especially 1930's Philco and Zenith radio tubes. I might have a radio or two to sell, if the price is right.

Good afternoon. I have a question. You connected the signal generator to ground. I'm assuming it was connected to the radio chassis. I don't have a signal generator, but I'm assuming there's 2 wires from the generator. if so, where does the other wire go?. I tuned my 10s464 by ear. I really need to purchase a signal generator.
@thattubesound22147 жыл бұрын
Jorge, You would follow the alignment instructions for placement of the other wire, which is the signal wire. Most of the time, the instructions will also tell you to put a "dummy antenna" or antenna load in series between the signal generator signal wire and the place where you inject the signal from that wire. For example, if you look at the alignment instructions for the 10S464 (I showed a close-up of it in part 7), you would see that, to align the IF transformers, you inject the signal at the grid of the First Detector (the grid cap of the 6A8). The instructions tell you to use a 0.5 microfarad "dummy antenna", which means you should grab a 0.47 microfarad capacitor and place it between the signal generator "+" lead and that grid cap. The signal generator negative lead always goes to chassis ground. When you do the shortwave, the 10S464 has you put the signal to the antenna lead on the wave magnet and use a 200 picofarad capacitor in series with the signal lead. Some radios have you insert resistors instead of capacitors for the dummy antenna. Signal generators can be found easily and cheaply on ePay. If I were you, I would also get a reliable Frequency Counter, so that you always know exactly what frequency you are injecting. My signal generator is an Eico 324, which is very common and easy to restore and repair. Good luck to you, my friend. Thank you very much for watching and for your comments and questions. They are valuable to me. Cheers! Michael
