Mister HandyMan Sir Did you add a new switch for the fart fan or did you just cut into the line of the old light switch to add the fart fan ?
@chrischavez63589 ай бұрын
Never mind I just rewatched and heard you say you added a switch for the fan specifically.

Nice work, I did mine 2 years ago and had no access from above :( every obstacle you can think of I ran into. I learned that no matter how much people show how things are done you always run into something new. Thanks for the video Handy man

in my bathroom there isn't any access either. I bet it'll be fun trying to install it. I wonder if The Handyman will do a how to video on that.

Just wanted to let you know your videos are great and your full of knowleage. I literally do the exact same thing as you here in Richmond, VA. Even if I know how to do the things your talking about I still love getting home and relaxing to your videos. Some customers are something else and every day brings something new and exciting!!!

"I should probably be wearing gloves, but then I'd have to wear a skirt", lol!, my feelings exactly. The only time I wear gloves is when I'm working with fiberglass insulation, and that's just because my skin breaks out for about a week if it touches my skin.

I worked for CertainTeed Gypsum, I see you using there tile board a lot. Its called TPC, or Diamond back. Its made specifically for hanging tile in bathrooms, because of what the board is coated with, its also water proof/anti-weathered board. Its very handy.

Installed many a fart fans in new residential construction. We would rip out those butterfly valves in the fart fans. Seen plenty of those valves stuck shut because when vent pipe was screwed in it would hold the valve closed.

You are an inspiration....when I began watching your videos years ago you were an encouragement for me to start my own business...im a solo guy learning as I go in the NOVA area and left my desk job 2 years ago chasing a dream of being a "handyman"...i enjoy the videos and I love what I do...no so much as full big jobs like you but the average small stuff for now..but 3 to 4 small jobs a day is still paying the bills....working my way up though. Hey Handyman. My oscillating tool is one of my favorites. I have a lath and plaster house too and have used it many times to cut holes for things like ceiling fart fans. I always use the dermal brand carbide blades. The cut nice clean lines in plaster like a boss! Only down side is the price. $40 for 3 of them at my local Home Depot. You should try them out sometime.

General question: What was the thinking behind shaving the tile as opposed to shaving the wall? Just cleaner/more efficient? Is there a downside to shaving the wall down in that area and compensating with thicker adhesive?

Had to redo mine completely, previous homeowner had the old 'fart fan' ventilating into an enclosed joist bay, filled in years of mold. Ripped it out replaced it with a modern one with LED lighting and wow are they quiet these days. Cut a hole in the roof and married a proper roof damper under the roof tiles, and piped it with insulated flex hose. I didn't have to fight with loose insulation and lath/plaster like you did but it was still a hassle with being right in the eave of a 4/12 pitch.

Great job! I picked up the fat maxx tool vest you recommended. It’s great. The only thing I don’t like is when you bend over and all your tools fall on on the floor. 😂
@TheHandyman16 жыл бұрын
There is Velcro that you have to undo in order to get the pockets to hang down when you bend over. I don't have any problems with tools falling out. I might do a tool video today and show the tool vest again.

what is the uncoupling membrane you were talking about at the end of the video? I am trying to do a floor, want it to match the height of my engineered HW floors and ditra with all the layers of mortar and blah blah blah is going to raise it too high. This could be my answer to my issues. Thanks

It was the answer to my issues. You wont find it in any big box store. I had to go to a tile distribution warehouse that mostly deals with commercial accounts. Here is a link. noblecompany.com/storage/docs/resources/DT082015-01_Dal-Seal_TS_Product_Description.pdf

Handyman Sorry I missed your live stream a few weeks back. Wondering if you can give me your opinion on my question. In one of your videos you mentioned you lived on a boat in Florida and said you worked there. I have worked as a electrical contractor and have built and remodeled my own homes have many years experience and I am retired now but I would like to work a bit when I am in Southwest Florida in the winter as a handyman. Do you think I could make enough in that area? I would not exclusively do electric work since I prefer to stay out of attics. 62 years old but have great knees. I do tile, build furniture , drywall, you get it. What do you think of the market down there. I am from Michigan with the same work ethic as you, but I don’t want to work for free. Appreciate any advise you could provide.

@stephaniebeaton39396 жыл бұрын
how do you patch lath a plaster walls? We have been living here 6 months in a lath and plaster house and the wall in one room is developing a crack. We've been careful but seems like fragile stuff. Was it broken there before and patched badly?
@stephaniebeaton39396 жыл бұрын
Also, we put laminate flooring in a closet. If we hammer the quarter round back onto the wall will we create more cracks in the lath and plaster? Should we use masonary drill and screws to attach quarter round?
@TheHandyman16 жыл бұрын
You could just glue the 1/4 round. I usually repair cracks in plaster with a reinforced mesh tape. I chip away the top layer of plaster around the crack. Its pretty thin. About 2 inches on each side of the crack. I put the mesh tape over the crack then use a setting compound to mud over the crack. I sand the setting compound then finish with a topping mix.
