Produced by the Standard Oil Company of California, this is a 1940s driver’s education and safety film. Unfortunately, the title of the film is missing, so we're not sure what the name of the film is or who directed or wrote it. The film is notable because it shows varied landscapes and naturalistic footage of diverse 1940s automobiles in “near-miss” driving conditions, taken from dashboard-mounted cameras with police supervision. The film was shot in California (TRT: 14:41).
Two California police officers in uniform stand outdoors, demonstrating a vision test used to determine impairment while driving. Two colored rods are positioned inside a box, testing the color's effect on depth perception (0:06). A hand with a pencil marks the rods. Another man has peripheral vision measured (0:33). POV night driving in low light. Headlights flash by (1:03). An officer peers into a wooden box which houses a machine measuring the effects of glare on drivers’ eyes (1:11). A spring-loaded mechanical device is mounted under the chassis of a 1940s automobile (1:19). Two police officers take measurements on the pavement, charting the relation of stopping distance to reaction time (1:57). Stopping distance measured at 40mph. The black automobile stops within feet of a two-tone police car, its tires smoking (2:28). POV driving in winter weather past distance markers. Passing oncoming trucks. Unsafe drivers speeding, changing lanes, passing improperly, and turning wildly in a montage (2:42). Driving on the wrong side of the highway as seen from behind. An automobile backs out from a parallel parking spot in Burbank, California (4:22). POV driving footage with a 70mph speedometer superimposed (4:44). Driving too slowly in the left hand lane. A police officer sounds a siren and pulls them over (5:54). A totaled maroon vehicle. A color-coded paper illustration of passing distances. Unsafe passing in montage (6:28) on the highway to Sacramento. Safe passing is demonstrated several times (7:15). A 4-way stop is illustrated with animation. Cars failing to observe the intersection’s stop signs pile up in a crash (7:51). Leaving a parking space in a maroon convertible. Outside a gas station, pedestrians walk through a crosswalk. A postman on a residential street (8:08). Residential driving in California (8:39). Another animated illustration shows a safe left turn, yielding to oncoming traffic (9:07). Overhead footage of highway drivers in vintage cars (9:23). The compacted hood of a black automobile is hooked up and towed away from the gas station (9:54). An illustration of a speedometer suggests proper following distances. An improper left turn is illustrated. Narration corrects the stereotype that improper left turns are only made by women (10:01). Life-action footage of a proper left turn onto a residential street. A Bekins Van & Storage Company trailer is pulled by a truck (10:47). A man clears his driveway of a wrench and his young son before backing up his vehicle (11:17). Parking brakes and proper angling of wheels for parking on an inclined hill (11:47). Parking in a confined space vs. a clear one (12:18). A prolonged yellow light. Cows, dogs, and horses obstruct a roadway. Driving through a forest and into a mountainous region (12:50). A dam, snow-covered mountains, coniferous trees, a small island, and a rainbow. Narration: “You may never find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but if you apply the golden rule of driving… you will live longer and happier...” (13:32). End titles: “This was a Standard Oil Company of California Presentation” (14:19).
More than 38,000 people die each year in car crashes on United States roadways. An additional 4.4 million are injured, requiring hospitalization.

So great to see all the old cars. Life moved at a comfortable pace back then when anything over 40 mph was considered speeding.

Fred Marriott set the Land Speed Record for steam engines of 127.659 MPH. He drove a steam powered car built by the Stanley Brothers and nicknamed the “Rocket”. This record was set in 1906 on the Florida sands of Ormand Beach.

I've recently been thinking about driving more than I ever have in my life, because my kid is 15 and has a learner's permit. It would appear that one thing that hasn't changed in over half a century is unsafe drivers.

This is interesting, felt like going through a time travel road trip and what available resources of the time to teach proper driving (some still used today but sure some idiot drivers made mistakes) and the roads almost clear before the suburbanization, defunding of our best public transport and so much car use/advertisements of car sellers, increased oil use as cars get bigger and lobbying to the introduction of big highways and parking lots littered today. Now modern driver education is more detailed and well researched (last January i finished 2 weeks of night driving school classroom studies in a local driving school not driving a car but studying laws, rules of the road, consequences, what to do in case of accidents, insurances and driver etiquette to car check ups and stories of people in accidents or avoiding death PSA video lectures). still interesting to see this. Even now we are lucky to have better airbags, seatbelt & child seat laws, lane sensors/parking/rear camera detectors and now the increase of car crash test safety standards came along from simple tests of a century ago.

Love these old cars..people still can't drive..it's getting more dangerous than ever..how some of these people got a license is a mystery.. And if there's one thing i hate is a drunk driver..I've encountered two who both said i was at fault which i was not..lost two vehicles and had neck injuries The sad thing was both drivers had prior DUI's..i have dash cam's front and rear so there will be no confusion..drive aware everyone..🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I had Driver's Ed in high school in 1970. They had an 'old' film (as in old in 1970) like this to show us highway carnage in hopes of scaring us into driving less like reckless teenagers. It was called "Signal 30" and I think it was put out by the Ohio State Police. Their radio code "Signal 30" meant a traffic accident with a fatality. I was in Pa. so the Pa. State Police conducted the 'reaction time/stop' demonstration. Their rig fit on the bumper and actually had three .38 cal. police revolvers attached to it. They fired chalk bullets. The cops -- and NOBODY believes this now, but it really happened -- took a couple of the school's jocks from the football and basketball teams and (allegedly with the permission of their parents because they were all way underage -- 21 being 'drinking' age at that time) and had them drink an ounce of vodka (also supplied by the cops) and take the 'reaction time/stop test." Then they'd have another vodka and do it again. I think they got 3 or 4 vodkas out of the deal. I do remember feeling quite 'cheated' when the cops didn't do that when I was finally in the Senior Class. Anyway, the first pistol shot was set off by the cop sitting on the passenger side of the car. That was when the driver was supposed to hit the brake. The second shot was when his foot actually hit the brake pedal, and the third was after the car had come to a full stop. The cops measured the distances between the chalk marks to illustrate their point about reaction times and drunkenness. Strangely, the jocks did better after one drink, but their concentration really went off when they'd had two and more. What I learned from that class was that I'd have to find a way to look older so I could get served in bars. By then dad had already noticed that some of his Canadian Club was disappearing and he'd started marking the bottles! I found you could only water that stuff down so much (to bring it back up to the pencil mark) before dad would catch on.
