Excellent work! Getting the job done with such a humble assortment of tools, very impressive. There is something very satisfying about seeing an old piece which most folks would see as trash and turning it into something useful for another 70 years. Well, if it can stay out of that brook it might last that long. Cool video, very enjoyable.

Hi Jerry. Forgot to mention how I liked the way in which you left your handle with that rough hewn finish. So many people would have gone further and sanded the handle to a smooth, almost professional looking finish but I think yours is much better as it affords better grip. Personally I would have taken the wood down further but that's only because I've got small hands. Keep up the good work mate!

this was brilliant, love your channel. Although is the handle strong enough if you just glue together two pieces of wood onto it? I imagine the glue might not hold and the handle will just slide off after a lot of vibrations and jarring impacts.

I thought you were kidding when you started to rough shape it with knife but you continued on to do the final shaping with i as well. I think you left too much meat on it to be a useful tool unless you have exceptionally large hands.

I personally would have drilled holes in the hilt so I could rivet the handle, rather than epoxy. Despite this, I have to commend this. Bonus points for knife carving the hilt.

Sooooo.... How many time does one have to sharpen his knife in order to whittle away THAT much wood? Btw, nice job. I have one of those oldies too. I can respect a nice solid wood grip.

Fair enough. I can imagine how therapeutic and perhaps even meditative it can be, although somewhat time-consuming. You seem to have done a great job anyway. I have a similar axe and the rubber handle is splitting. Although I have affected a temporary repair by glueing a piece of bicycle inner tube over the top, it can get a bit slippery in the hand when in use. I have no access to a workshop so I'm eventually gonna have to replace it using 6mm paracord. I'm sure there's a vid on here somewhere that'll show me how to do this.

Looks good mate but using a knife on something like this just doesn't do it justice in my opinion. I always find my best results come from a drawknife, farriers rasp and some strips of 60 grit sandpaper to shape the handle.
