Basically, he uses a light, easily melt-able and form-able material which looks like Styrofoam to create the handles shape and then when he pours the liquid metal in, the Styrofoam melts and the metal takes it's shape because it cannot go anywhere else since the rest of the box was filled with dirt or something else, not allowing the liquid metal to flow somewhere else. And the weird pillars looking out, are just there so he can pour the metal equally and easily into the actual form of the handle. So he used the Styrofoam to make a metal handle, since I believe it is more reliable then a wooden one, the reason why he did it so often was, he failed the 1st and 2nd attempt. So at the 3rd try he actually managed to get a stable and good looking handle, I don't know if this is more clear, but... yeah

@digitalghosts45996 жыл бұрын
@@Kus519 It was styrofoam. The idea is that it melts away and even leaves the mold in form of gas when you pour molten metal in.
@jacek-jan6 жыл бұрын
@@Kus519 Precisely it is a polystyrene a harder and more homogenic "cousin" to styrofoam
@piranha0310916 жыл бұрын
@@jacek-jan "Polystyrene" is the name of the polymer (also used for plastic cups and cuttlery in its normal form), "expanded polystyrene" is the foam you can make out of it, "styrofoam" is a particular trademark for that foam (which everyone uses as a shorthand for expanded polystyrene anyways). So "polystyrene" here is actually an imprecise appellation, since all styrofoam _is_ polystyrene.

Really nice video and restoration, shame about having to redo the handle three times but things go wrong from time to time.I did a video of a broad axe hack a few weeks ago, completely changed the profile it is awesome to restore old axes. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
@platonp14366 жыл бұрын
it will brake in day 1 of real use :) but ok for wall hanger, not real axe why? because every next hit this handle will get tiny deformation from energy that its head transfer to it... again and again... every hit. and never restore shape like wood does. aluminum is really soft metal :) hit it with hammer and you will see deep dent. same as with this hatchet - hit it HARD over hard wood and there is a HUGE chance this head will get loose... and trust me, you don't want to chop a tree with a loose axe ;)
@CrybabyArtist6 жыл бұрын
not to mention the electrolysis that will ruin both.. ( and brake in your case is break, brake is like the one that stops your car and break is the on kung fu does to your arm)

Forging metal gives much better results than smelting. But it is still an aluminium... The other (painful) thing is that, metal does not absorb impact as wood do. But we both have to admit that results looks good.
