People were so well dressed and skinnier back then. A lot more pride in themselves in comparison to todays standard

@@anagonyaowusu3119They did no such thing. Yes there were wrong things that happened in colonial times but Māori tribes could also be barbaric (cannibalism, killing babies..). Would you prefer we went back to pre European times? How would that look to you?

Wow, thin, industrious Whites, clean streets and beaches, safe parks for single women, where are the Asian, Maori, and Indians?

Asians (East + Southeast), are fine - at least they attempt to integrate and don’t behave violently or recreate the grim social conditions from which they departed.

Generally, the Asians and Indians weren't here, and Maori were kept out of sight in south Auckland and smaller towns. Sad but true.

This is a very sanitised view of Auckland of the time it was riddled with so called slum housing in the inner city,I have pictures and had many relatives who lived in it. Ngati Whatua were resident in Orakei and post war Maaori were in hostels like the methodist Maaori mission etc but still most were in the country again I have relatives who attest to this. This film looks like a tourist or immigration advert, not a realistic view all mostly well off people

Not so much a 'city of sunlight' these days, either literally or figuratively.

I grew up in that time and there definitely were Maori around, one of them was my best mate. But life was simple and we just accepted each other as we were. We had a lot of fun without all the over tones now of being different cultures. It was a very happy time.

Yes. the Māori population in Auckland was only about 2%. Maori didn't move to Auckland until after 1945. I grew up in the 1950s in Point Chevalier, a suburb of Auckland. In each class of my school, there were only one or two Polynesians and more Islanders than Maori.
