One Hundred Years of Cinema

Күн бұрын

La Belle et La Bete (1946) was the first live-action was the first live-action film based on the classic story, and it still stands today as one of the richest, most opulent films ever made. Jean Cocteau embued his film with a deep sense of the magic and in doing so he revealed some truths about humanity.
This video explores how Cocteau used magic in his film and what it says about mankind as a whole.
Thanks for watching One Hundred Years of Cinema, I will be writing a video essay about at least one film each year from 1915 onward to track the evolution of film over the last century. Please subscribe and share! Thank you!

I happened to catch a very brief snippet of this movie once as a child when overnighting at my nana's place. The scene I caught was that of Beast asking Belle to marry him, and of her rejecting him. I also got that he asked her the same question every night, and that every night, she rejected him. I think I was too terrified of the Beast character at that point to dare to continue watching, so I probably fled back to bed, but I always wondered about the rest of the movie. Thank you for covering it in such a beautiful fashion. I know now I really need to get my hands on it as I'm sure I will enjoy it as a grown-up.

'La Belle et La Bete' was the first film I ever bought on VHS. I love it for so many reasons and still think it's the best version ever made of the story. I am delighted it was your choice for 1946, and am glad to see you back. :)

An excellent review of a beautiful interpretation of Beauty and The Beast. One of my all time favourite scenes is the beast crying and the tears turn to precious stones - wonderfully enchanting but also ethereal . Thank you for this.

I started doing something like this a few years ago, where I went from the beginnings of cinema and watched as many essential films as I could from the silent film era to present day. I’m now in 1948. This channel deserves a massively bigger following. I love what you’re doing and how you analyze each film and its place in history. Keep making these, and I’m so excited to share the journey. 😊

I was drawn to Cocteau after reading about Beauty and the Beast in Danny Peary's 'Cult Movies' book. Great film. By the way, keep making these things. I show them to my wife and she's been expanding her viewing catalogue.

the re. of cinema: watched this film with a roommate at the time who was more into action/adventure. he scoffed when we first starting watching it, but couldn't tear himself away. he really liked it! it is one of those gifts you give to someone- the power of fantasy in a beautiful movie

It's a tie between Capra's It's A Wonderful Life and Hitchcock's Notorious for my favourites of 1946. I haven't sat down and watched La Belle et La Bete but you've inspired me to do so! I'm yet to discover an acclaimed film from the 40s that I don't love, quite honestly. Like others, I truly miss watching this series of yours. I hope you continue it one day.

0:25 Psycho was released in 1960. And I am so sick and tired of people calling the 1991 Disney animated version the original Beauty and the Beast. This is the original, and I hope more people watch.

I mean the Disney film is kind of a remake of the Cocteau film; the handsome suitor who is ugly on the inside and the objects in the castle being alive are inventions of Cocteau.

It's ironic that Disney love to rip off other people's ideas.

@@willlyon7129 So using these vague ideas as well or being inspired by them now counts as "ripping them off"?

No one is calling the Disney version the original in terms of films in general. Everyone who at least spent a little time on the internet knows there were adaptations of this fairytale beforehand. I found out about the Cocteau film pretty early because of that.

Great as always. But Psycho came out in 1960. BTW. I just realised that Ridley Scott and Francis Coppola blatantly borrowed his shots for both "Legend" and "Dracula".

Another interesting detail is the statue that shot Avanon I believe is Artemis who famously turned a man who perversely looked at her bathing into a stag a prey animal.

Great job. For 1946, How about Notorious or It's a Wonderful Life? For 1947, Black Narcissus and the rise of British film industry. Also, Lady in the Lake filmed in the first person view. for 1948, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, John Huston masterpiece on irony or even Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein how horror and comedy are blended. I hope you keep this up, but these are ideas for your channel.

The term “a magic trick” is redundant. The defining characteristic of magic is that there is a trick. If it cannot be truly explained how it happened, that is not magic, it is a “miracle.” For instance, Beauty and the Beast is full of camera tricks; Cocteau performing magic. But the fact that this classic film was ever produced, with almost no resources, in a time of great privation in France while the war was still winding down, was a miracle.
