My father was Tex Johnston who won the Thompson in 1946. The family recently loaned the Allegheny Ludlum trophy he received for setting a new world speed record to the Niagara Falls museum. This year was the 75th anniversary of the race. The original Thompson trophy is in the Smithsonian .

Nice to know your father is A.M. "Tex" Johnston and thanks for sharing that information about your family's generosity. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your father's book, "Tex Johnston, Jet-Age Test Pilot" which I still have.

Right at the 10:00 mark we get Sammy Mason doing a vertical half snap roll in a PT-17 that is breathtaking, then and now. Thanks for posting this.

I think the P38 aerobatics demonstration by Tony LeVier was the same one he had given to front-line combat fliers during the war. The P38 had a reputation as being hard to handle with one engine out, and LeVier would do demonstrations for pilots with one engine out, showing that the plane was flyable. LeVier was a pilot's pilot.

Love the slow motion landing shot of the Pennsylvania Central Airlines Douglas C-54/DC-4 Skymaster! PCA was the first airline to put the Skymaster in service on January 15, 1946. This particular aircraft, NC88839, was originally built as a C-54-DO (Douglas-Chicago built) and converted to a DC-4 for PCA. It crashed at Pittsburgh, PA on April 18, 1957. PCA changed its company name to Capital Airlines in 1948. Capital merged with United Airlines on July 1, 1961.

I love the old P-80 Shooting Star. Really cool lines. Back before the FAA got involved and setting rules and there was tons of national pride n our country and what we could do.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films!
