Your video of removing and installing the spindles was very helpful. The new king pin kit and the drop axle did not come with instructions. I got my new drop axle installed ok and when I went to install the spindles the king pins did not fit. Your video and lack of instructions of the new drop axle does not inform the customer that the axle has to be reamed for king pins. Now I got to figure how to get the axle reamed for the king pins.

You can, but you're getting into really low territory where you're going to start having clearance issues and problems with steering components like the pitman arm you mentioned.

Any time you are tinkering with a system on your truck, you should always inspect the associated items at the same time.
@rickpazmino58202 жыл бұрын
Can you confirm the installation position of that shim? Pretty sure if you install it with the fat side toward the front of the truck, that would give you negative caster, which would be for non power steering trucks right?
@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV2 жыл бұрын
Both ways will give you negative caster, but power steering trucks use more caster than non-power steering trucks. The reason for that is the extra caster in the front end causes extra "work" to steer the truck, which is easily overcome by the power steering. Non-power steering uses less caster to make it easier to steer, albeit slightly less stable and likely to self straighten, than it would be with more caster.
@rickpazmino58202 жыл бұрын
@@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV pretty sure installing those shims fat side forward gives you more negative caster, and if you were to spin them 180, fat side toward the back of the truck, you’d get more positive caster. This would be the opposite of what your video states with regard to what a power steering vehicle, as opposed to a non power steering vehicle needs.

Is that lowered with just drop axle ? Or with dearced springs also
@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV4 жыл бұрын
This drop axle will get you down exactly 3" from where you are whether you have stock springs or de-arced springs, so you can count on that. To answer your question, we can't remember if this truck had drop springs on it or not.
@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV4 жыл бұрын
Ok, just looked back at our video when we installed the de-arced springs and the axle was not on it at the time. So, we have to assume when we installed the axle it already had the drop springs.

Why put a + caster on manual steering but a - caster on power steering?
@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV3 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the "ease" of steering. + caster will actually be easier to turn the wheel due to how the weight of the front end falls on the tires. - caster is exactly the opposite and makes it slightly more difficult to turn but adds stability and helps the steering re-center itself after your make a turn.
@cecilbarnes78543 жыл бұрын
@@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV My 55 chevy 3100 w/ straight axle & ps will pull one way or the other when I go through a dip in the road. All front end parts are tight with 4 degree shims to get positive caster. You say to go with negative caster. So is this article wrong? "Positive caster is when the steering axis is in front of the verticle. In a road car, this would mean that the top of the coilover would be pushed towards the rear of the car. Positive caster creates a lot of align torque (the force that straightens the steering wheel when you go forward) which improves straight line stability of the car. Due to the geometry of positive caster it also will increase negative camber gain (a good thing) when turning. As you increase positive caster the steering will get heavier also, but with modern power steering systems this is rarely a problem. Generally you want as much positive caster as you can reasonably get so long as the car is equipped with power steering". I'm at my wits end trying to figure how to get my steering safe. Thank you for any help you can give me.
@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV3 жыл бұрын
@@cecilbarnes7854 We assume this article is not discussing a straight axle type front suspension. What you have described is called "bump steer", we suggest you try some Negative camber.
