Vintage 1948 colour footage of the round 8 Richmond v Carlton game played at the Punt Rd Oval on Saturday the 5th of June.
The Tigers got up by 13 points, helped by the Blues inaccurate kicking in front of goal. You can just spot Carlton star forward Ken Baxter kicking one of his three goals for the day.
How many other players can you identify?
I’ve added the AFL tables link match summary below with player photo screen shots in the comments on my Facebook VFL/AFL 20th century footy history page fb.watch/i8gXc...

Piano version of Buttons and Bows added to this footage courtesy of the ACMI collection.

Looks like shot from the old Cricketers Stand. I see the Red Rattler train going past. The old manual scoreboard. Marvellous

Those two young girls in the stand that the camera focuses at the start and again near the end, they would both be 92 years old now. Oh boy.

Despite Richmond winning the match, they missed the finals in 1948, after making the finals the year before in 1947. In fact 1948 was the first year in an extremely long period of time that Richmond did not play finals at all, until 1967 19 years later in when they won the premiership with the legendary Tom Hafey as coach. From 1948-1966, Richmond didn't play in a single VFL/AFL senior finals game! And then after that they won 5 premierships in the next 13 years!! Work that out.🤔

Brilliant stuff Gezza! I hope they don't knock down that old grandstand at Punt Road. It should be protected like the old Fitzroy stand at Brunswick Street Oval.

Great footage. I love the old red rattler trains in the background. Those of us above a certain age remember things like that.

When I first saw this I was wrongly thinking Glenferrie Oval. I was forgetting the Punt Rd oval being Richmond's home ground. Also thought here is some good material for Gezza and I was not wrong. I think more to follow soon.

There are some photos on the internet of the old suburban grounds from an Ariel view. A lot of them where so narrow & odd shaped it was hard to imagine how they crammed 50,000 + into them

That long shot ...1:06 into the footage...looks like there maybe it is an 8 on his guernsey? It is difficult to make out. Fred Davies wore 28..or maybe it was a 9- Bob Kelsey? The ruckman who bangs it out of the centre square was obviously "Chooka" Howell. It is good to see some more footage from this period, thanks.
