On 24 June 1948, a state of emergency was declared in Malaya and Singapore, the result of a series of violent acts by the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM). By the end of 1958, the CPM had withdrawn its armed units into the jungles of Southern Thailand. Around 8,000 civilians and security personnel had been killed or wounded in that period.
