What a beauty. I am surprised to see power windows on it, didn’t know they existed back in 1948.

I am almost positive they were hydraulically powered, I may be wrong, and if my memory is correct they were problematic and often changed to electric powered ones after those became more common.

@@roygunter3244 You are correct, I have a '47 convertible coupe and they are hydraulic with the pump on the firewall. Beautiful car, thanks.

My 49 Oldsmobile had power windows...they were electric, I really am not a Ford guy so I don't know about the Lincoln.
@juslangley5 жыл бұрын
Hydraulic, actually. Back in those days, and even in later decades, an electric motor with enough power for a window was pretty darn big. Putting one in a door along with all the wiring and other hardware would have been impossible, at least with a normal sized door. Another example of a car with hydraulically powered windows is the 1972 Mercedes-Benz 600; even in 1972, electric motors were still very large.. Hydraulics were an absolute pain though! Have you ever sprung a power steering leak? It's an absolute mess! Now imagine that INSIDE your car.

@redjupiter25 жыл бұрын
There is an obvious reason why you guys think it (the kit) belongs there and that is because it does. This is the very car that started the term “Continental kit”! The spare tire on these cars, first issued in 1939, were mounted inside a body colored steel cover set into the rear bumper mounting area. The aftermarket kits followed soon after. I really am surprised that people don’t know this simple piece of automobile history. After all it isn’t called a Cadillac kit or a Buick kit LOL

When cars were cars, manufacturered OUT OF 100% STEEL, RIGHT AFTER WWII!!! My ukle had 1 of these exact cars, and my dad had a salvage yard in Michigan, and Nebr. He keeped countless hood ornaments (emblems) from being destroyed-crushed, and I believe I found 1 of these bullet shaped Lincoln hood ornaments. I wondered what the heck it came out of, I've even got a 30s or 40s dodge ram truck ornament, and a 58 mercruy M hood ornament, and a 58 Edsel ornament, 2 studabekers grill ornaments, and I think 3 57 Chevy's, or Oldsmobiles hood ornaments, those appear to be jet aircrafts, Thanks for sharing this car👍👍👍

When I was growing up, I always thought the Lincoln Continental was a beautiful and distinctive looking car. So, I'm surprised to see in this video that the Continental still had external door hinges in 1948, especially considering that the Lincoln Continental was a high-end luxury car. Even more surprising is the fact that it has an external door hinge at the top of the door when cheaper Fords had already eliminated the exposed hinge at the top of the door and only had an external door hinge at the bottom of the door where it's less noticeable. Maybe Ford was still using up the last of the pre-war parts for the Continental in 1948. But, the Lincoln Zephyr, which is similar to the Continental had hidden door hinges in 1948 and only a year later the popular box-style 1949 Ford had fully hidden door hinges. The Model T Ford had external door hinges, so I don't expect to see exposed door hinges on anything but trucks, Jeeps, and foreign cars by 1948--- definitely not on a top of the line luxury car. I don't think any GM or Chrysler cars still had exposed door hinges in 1948 and even the smaller car companies had progressed beyond external door hinges by 1948. So, what's the big deal about external door hinges on a car? Exposed door hinges distract from the streamlined appearance of a car and they look old fashioned. As a kid growing up in the forties and fifties, I was sensitive to automotive styling advances such as hidden door hinges, hidden running boards, one piece curved windshields, and large rear windows, because these details separated the old pre-war cars from what I thought of as modern new cars.

My late father has quite a collection of classic cars.... rotting in a warehouse. His widow refused to sell them to his friends. The 1942-45 Lincoln Zephyr Continental limousine is one of my favorites. Many of the cars are fully restored, he drove all of them. Most of them are fords. Has also a 1932 peace arrow straight 12, oil cooled engine. It is really a pity that they are not being taken care of better.

Too bad they abandoned the lovely, light 1940-41 grille for that heavy-handed, monstrous, busy 1942-48 front end. Ford designer Bob Gregorie, responsible for FoMoCo's distinctive lines from the mid--'30s on was first a yacht designer, and it showed. Compare the above with a 1940-41 Lincoln Continental coupe and you'll see the difference. Wags called the Lincoln Zephyr "a Ford-and-a-half," which it was, some of the engine parts interchanged, and the Zephyr/Continental V-12 had the least torque per cubic inch of any period engine, Crosley included. But with a Columbia rear axle, or 1941-on, overdrive, and their short stroke, they were good cruisers, but didn't like hard city use.
