If it's in good shape, then you got a good deal. I'm always pleased when I find a typewriter with its "ephemera"-the printed material like manuals, guarantees, etc. It's like getting a bonus. Congrats on your fine, and thanks for letting me know.

I just purchased one of this. Works very nice, however the spacer is stuck/locked. I cannot figure how to unlock it. Can you show or tell me how to unlock the spacer?

Hi, Mark. Thanks for writing. Okay, if by spacer you mean the space bar isn't advancing the carriage, then the carriage might be locked or the margin settings (set in the back of the typewriter. Pull down the back cover) are pushed together. Let's start with the carriage lock. If the carriage is locked, it should be centered (42 on the carriage scale). If so, then the carriage will not move when you hit the space bar or when you type with the keys. Face the typewriter. On your left is a lever that looks like a little stick shift. It should have a little round sphere on the top. It moves slightly in two directions: front to back and left and right. Try repositioning the lever and see it that frees it up. The purpose of the lock is to keep the carriage from sliding around in the case or when being moved. If that's not it, check your margin settings by opening the hinged back of the typewriter. If the margin stops are both in the middle of of the carriage, then separate them. They should slide easily to the right and the left. If it's neither one of those, then check to see if the draw band/cord is still attached. If you look underneath the typewriter and see something hanging loose, then you have a different and more difficult problem. Le't hope its one of the first two I mentioned. Let me know how it goes. So I did some more checking, I believe the spring the connects the space bar to the mechanism that actually move the carriage over one space is missing. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I've tried searching the internet but truthfully don't really know what to search for. Thank you for answering my first question and thanks in advance for this one. I'm really hoping to get it working as it is in excellent shape otherwise and really smooth to type on. Thanks again.

That's hard to say, Mark, since I can't see the typewriter. I'm not sure what spring you're talking about. There are several possible problems, but I would need to see the machine. Sorry.
