Agatha Christie used the British version of this machine. This matte black portable came to me unexpectedly and is in wonderful condition. It, like others in the Model 5 family, is a sweet typer. Looks good and works well. Who could ask for more?

A 12/1940 Remette came into my possession…fixed one issue and now it works perfectly. Fun the way the type bars fly up and over. All the rubber including the feet is in great condition, the entire machine has a quality feel, type feel is firm but consistent, easy to type on.

I've just bought a 1941 made Remington and this is the first video I've found with the EXACT make and model of my typewriter. And just a year apart! I picked mine up for $45 USD at an antique sale. It's been used quite a bit, but it still works good and will be taking it in to a shop soon to get it checked. I'm so happy I found your channel!!!

Thanks for writing, Silver Fox. Congrats on your purchase. I've always loved the looks of this typer. It sounds like you got a good deal at $45. I'm glad the video was useful to you.

What a great find. Love these 1930s/40s typewriters before plastic keys and two-tone bodies. Whether it’s mat/textured or a deep, glossy black finish they are just gorgeous.

Hi. Great vid. Do you have any idea how to raise up lower case letters on this? Lowercase adjustment screw isn't allowing me to raise it up... it's like the platen is too high on it. Is there maybe a way of adjusting platen or carriage height? Thanks

HI Colum. Since I'm not a true typewriter repairman with years of experience, I'm reluctant to offer specific ideas about how to fix things. It sounds like it could be one of several problems. You're right to trying to adjust the type bar screws. And again, you're right to suspect something wrong with the carriage or carriage bed. Some typers have adjustments on the beds, some have washer's that wear out. You might try searching Phoenix Typewriter videos on KZbin. Dwayne is amazing and has 40 plus years of experience. I would search for Remingtons from about the late 30s through the 40s. Often typers with different model numbers/names use the same mechanics. One thing to check: Does the carriage grind when you move it? If so, then the problem might be with worn washers or something wrong with the carriage bed. Sorry I can't be more help.

Hey, I have the exact same model typewriter and trying to get it working again. I'm missing the spools (ribbon pieces). Can't find a them anywhere online or in stores. Wondering if you have any info. Thanks

If you’re looking for original spools, then you might try eBay. I’ve picked up a few things there.

@@altongansky Thanks you. Any advice on what to use to get the platen revitalized? I found that two of the smaller rubber platens on the back won't turn.

Miguel Keeler I would start by going to jjshort.com. They resurface platens and typewriter rollers. It’s not unusual for rollers to develop flat spots and refuse to turn.

First, a huge thank you for this video. I recently purchased a 1942 Remington Deluxe Model 5 and your post was quite helpful. I was looking for an email address to ask you about the location of the vertical alignment screws (if you knew) on this model, but was unable to find one at your website. So, I decided to just ask here. After having the platen mailed off to be professionally restored, and spooling a new ribbon on it, the shift alignment is still off. If you had any insight as the how to adjust it I would greatly appreciate it! And I know many others that would too, especially considering the sparse returns when searching the web for assistance on the model. Thank you!

Hi PCR, thanks for writing. Congrats on your Model 5. I no longer have that particular machine, but I do have a slightly different version. If I understand your question, you're wanting to adjust the type so that the lowercase and uppercase align at the base (called "on feet"). I'm not a typewriter repairman but I do tinker a lot. Still, I've done what you asking on other typewriters. Here's what I suggest: Here is a link to a repair manual for similar machines made by Remington. site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/RemingtonNoiselessPortablesService.pdf . Look at page 12 and 13. There is a screw and nut near the center of the underside of the machine. That is probably want you want. Here's another manual that might help: site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/MechanicalInstructionsRemingtonPortableTypewriters1953.pdf . I hope this helps.
