"But Wait, There's More!" 1946 Underwood with Case Stand

The Underwood Universal typewriter is a pleasure to look at and to use. Although we looked at one in Ep. 12, I present another, but this one comes with a twist-and that twist is in the case. The machine is from 1946, US made, and in many ways, unique.

I had been given a universal underwood typewriter with a similar case for christmas and whilst watching your video realised that the keys on my typewriter were metal rimed and glass toped instead of plastic like yours and was wondering if this ment it was pre war rather than post or something I am also mostly asking you because I cant seem to find much else about the universal typewriter other than your videos on them

Hello Nova. Congrats on your typewriter. Generally speaking, metal and glass keycaps were pre WWII. Underwood stopped making typewriters for 3 years beginning in 1943. Typewriters with plastic keycaps became standard in the years following the war, although there are some exceptions. The best thing to do is look up the machine's serial number on www.typewriterdatabase.com. The serial number can be found on the right side of the bottom of the machine.

Hi Paco. Thanks for writing. First thing you need to do is find the serial number. Open the cover over the type bars and look in front (and down) of the left ribbon. You should see a narrow metal plate with a long number stamped on it. Write that number down. Then go to www.typewriterdatabase.com, search for your model of type writer and find where your number fits. That should tell you the year. Or, if you want, you can send the number to me and I'll look it up for you. That database is big and takes a little practice. If you're a collector, the database is a very useful tool. Let me know what you find out. Again, thanks for writing.

This is my first typewriter, I have it because 2 reasons: Pretty good Condition and I bought it for 10 dollars. What I really like to have Royal 1940, anyone Black with metal for example Royal Arrow
